Mercedes Benz has determined that some 2020-2021 GLE and GLS class vehicles may be equipped with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) software that does not meet the current production specifications. Under certain driving conditions these vehicles do not conform to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for electronic stability control.

According to the defect report, automated test scenarios with driving maneuvers that require fast changes in direction could apply a torque to one of the front wheels that could unexpectedly pull the vehicle to one side. Drivers will not receive an advanced warning that there is a problem and the unexpected pull could increase the chance of an accident.

Vehicles Affected Include
2020-2021 Mercedes Benz GLE350
2020-2021 Mercedes Benz GLE450
2020 Mercedes Benz GLE580
2020 Mercedes Benz GLS450
2020 Mercedes Benz GLS580

Mercedes Benz USA will notify owners and instruct them to return to their dealerships to have the ESP software updated. The recall is expected to begin April 13, 2021. The NHTSA campaign number for this recall is 21V-071.
