Porsche Cars North America (Porsche) has initiated a comprehensive recall spanning several models and model years due to a critical issue concerning overheating charging cables. This measure aims to address a significant safety concern related to the risk of fire.

The recall encompasses a wide range of Porsche's electric and hybrid vehicles, including:

2019-2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid

2024 Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid

2020-2023 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid

2021-2023 Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid

2021-2023 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid

2021-2023 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid

2021-2024 Porsche Taycan

2022-2024 Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo

2020-2024 Porsche Taycan 4S

2020-2024 Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo

2022-2024 Porsche Taycan GTS

2022-2024 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo

2020-2024 Porsche Taycan Turbo

2021-2024 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo

2020-2024 Porsche Taycan Turbo S

2020-2024 Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo

The defect report highlights a critical issue where an elevated electrical resistance at the receptacle interface could result in charging cables overheating when plugged into certain types of lower quality electrical receptacles. Specifically, when using the industrial 220V/240V plug at the 100% charge setting, some home power outlets may struggle to handle the electrical current required for the compact charging system, leading to overheating of the outlet or charging cable.

In June 2023, Porsche became aware of additional instances of overheating in Taycan charging cables, even after power reduction measures. Investigation revealed that, although the NEMA plug in the charging cable meets UL household use criteria, its use with a lower quality electrical receptacle can cause permanent damage. This damage can lead to increased electrical resistance and higher temperatures, even when used with recommended outlets.

In response to 110 incidents of mobile charger malfunctions linked to this issue, Porsche decided to supersede the WMP2 Service Campaign with a safety recall to replace the affected mobile chargers. This decision was made on December 6, 2023, after thorough review and analysis of the latest field data.

Increased resistance in the charging cable elevates the risk of overheating and thermal damage, potentially leading to a fire. Outdated dwelling electrical wiring and lower quality electrical receptacles can exacerbate this problem, causing permanent damage to the charging cable.

Porsche advises owners against using the 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable and recommends utilizing the 110V home charging cable or public charging stations. Dealers will provide a new 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable with an integrated temperature sensor. Interim owner notification letters, explaining the safety risk, are expected to be mailed by February 9, 2024. A second notice will follow once remedy parts are available, anticipated by mid-2024.

This recall, designated under Porsche's number APB6 and the NHTSA campaign number 23V-841, underscores Porsche's commitment to safety and its proactive approach in addressing potential hazards.

Porsche's decision to recall and replace the charging cables is a significant move to ensure the safety of its customers and to mitigate risks associated with electrical fires. Owners of the affected models are urged to heed the recommendations and await further instructions from Porsche regarding the replacement of their charging cables.
