The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) have opened an investigation into certain 2018-2020 VW Atlas vehicles after receiving three complaints from owners who say that the fuel system started leaking near the fuel injectors in the engine compartment of their SUV's. These models are equipped with 3.6L engines. The ODI also observed higher warranty claims for the fuel systems on some 2018 Atlas vehicles.

Consumers complaints say a fuel leak, fuel odour and/or illuminated malfunction indicator light (MIL) alerted them of the problem. Some complaints allege fuel spraying from the engine compartment. Fuel injectors leaking fuel near engine compartment components that operate at high temperatures has a higher potential risk of an engine fire.

ODI is opening a preliminary evaluation (PE) to determine the scope and severity of the problem as well as assess the safety issues of fuel leaks for the 2018-2020 Volkswagen Atlas.

There have been no fires connected to this issue to date.
