Defect Description:
SERVICE BRAKES
Potential Consequences:
While towing the listed trailer (2023 Genesis Supreme 37CRXL 5th Wheel) on the freeway at approximately 55 MPH, traffic began to slow in front of me. I applied the brakes in my tow vehicle and noticed the brakes in the trailer were not effective and the trailer was pushing the truck. Thankfully a collision did not occur as I had left adequate space to stop the truck and trailer. Upon inspection of the brakes on all three axles of the trailer, I discovered the following. These brakes are electrically operated drum style brakes. The backside of the drum contains the inner bearing and has a grease seal. The grease seal on all 6 brakes (left and right of the 3 axles) had failed and allowed the brakes to become coated with grease. The entire spindle was coated in grease with a large amount of grease coming out of the front where the spindle nut would be located. This leads me to believe the manufacturer is using the zerk fitting on the front of the axle spindle to completely fill the bearing cavity with grease and causing the seals to fail.
