SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

The fuel guage hits empty after only 3 gallons with a 5gal tank, did not do this when I first bought it, started after about 1200 miles on a long road trip. The TFT resets on its own, mileage for a tank will read for instance 22mi. when it should be 140-ish. It has reset while riding and on occasion between turning off ignition and restarting. At what point does this affect the automatic trans mission? The DCT is shifting up into 6th before 30mph creating a bog down situation. The resets also happen while operating on the road, just not when stopped.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

This concerns a Honda motorcycle with a Dual Clutch Transmission (aka, automatic). This motorcycle has had an NHTSA recall for my specific issue (see below [22V-622 JPH added 01Jun2023]) and has had the recall performed. The issue prompting the recall is still happening to me and others who have had the recall performed. The engine sometimes stalls when given gas after idling (for me, it has always been idling for at least 30 seconds). When it happens, it happens the instant that I turn the throttle (the motorcycle doesn't even move). The hotter the ambient temperature, the more likely it is to happen. This issue has happened 6 times in the last 700 miles. It has only happened to me when it was 84 degrees or hotter. During the 700 mile period, it went about 315 miles without doing it, but eventually did it the heat of the afternoon. It did it twice today in about 80 miles. It's dangerous to be sitting at a stop light with cars/trucks behind me and not accelerate immediately when the light turns green (or worse, with drivers barreling toward me, seeing a green light and not slowing because they expect me to immediately get out of their way). Stalling is especially dangerous on streets/roads with high speed limits. I haven't taken my motorcycle to the Honda dealership where it was purchased yet (I'm the second owner but still covered by the Honda warranty). They informed me that they are not staffed to spend a lot of time trying to reproduce the issue. Nevertheless, I will drop it off with them soon since I don't have another option. Honda dealer techs inspected the vehicle when they performed the initial recall but say they need to inspect it again. I receive no warnings before it happens.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

The TFT Touchscreen has failed multiple time. Sometimes it blackouts so I cannot see what speed I am going or my tachometer. Recently it stopped responding to my touch input. This is an issue worldwide with any Honda Africa Twin 202X - to present. If it has a TFT screen they have this issue. There are forums upon forums about this exact issue, we are all waiting patiently for Honda to announce a recall. I am out of warranty so it would cost me upwards of 3K USD to fix this issue which is 100% a manufacturer defect from factory.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

While overpassing a slow moving truck doing about 45 MPH on a 2-lane highway, I accelerated to overtake the vehicle. Just before pulling in front of the truck I experienced a total loss of propulsion. I thought I had a broken chain. I quickly looked and discovered the chain was intact. I could rev the engine, but it would not go in gear. This is a Dual-Clutch transmission model. Unable now to overtake the truck and with traffic oncoming, I retreated to the shoulder on the far side of the road. The engine remained at a fast idle, but unable to get it in gear, I shutoff the engine. When I restarted the computer, I could not start the engine because now it was stuck in 3rd gear. After multiple attempts I was able to get the back to downshift to 3, 2, 1, then N by simultaneously rolling the bike back and forth while pressing the downshift button. I was able to ride the motorcycle home approx 165 miles without further fault but this could've ended badly.
