MY BOLT EV COMES EQUIPPED WITH THE OPTIONAL SIDE BLIND ZONE ALERT SYSTEM WHICH LIGHTS UP IN MY SIDE VIEW MIRRORS WHEN ACTIVATED BY A CAR IN MY BLIND ZONE. THIS WINTER THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE ACTIVATED BOTH WHEN A VEHICLE WAS IN MY BLIND ZONE AND AT MANY OTHER TIMES AS WELL. MY CHEVROLET DEALER WAS UNABLE TO TROUBLESHOOT THE MALFUNCTION . THEY CONSULTED WITH GM TECHNICAL ASSISATANCE AND WERE TOLD TO TRACE ALL THE WIRING THROUGH THE VEHICLE LOOKIG FOR A BAD CONNECTION. AFTER READING ABOUT THE ISSUE ONLINE I REALIZED THAT THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE SONAR USED IN THE SYSTEM IS ONLY CALIBRATED TO WORK WITH THE SPECIFIC OEM TIRES THE CAR CAME EQUIPPED WITH AND DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY WITH THE SAME BRAND OF TIRE WITH A WINTER TREAD. AS I LIVE IN THE NYS SNOWBELT I NEED TO USE SNOW TIRES . THIS APRIL WHEN I TOOK OFF THE SNOW TIRES THE ISSUE WITH FALSE BLIND ZONE ALERTS WENT AWAY. MY DISCUSSION WITH CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE RESULTED WITHOUT A FIX OR RECOMMENDATION ON HOW I CAN USE SNOW TIRES WITH THE CAR. THEY CONSIDER THE ISSUE RESOLVED BY USING ONLY THE OEM ALL SEASON TIRES. I FEEL NEXT WINTER I WOULD HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO DISCONNECT THE SIDE BLIND ZONE ALERT WARNING LIGHTS RATHER THAN FOREGOING THE USE OF SNOW TIRES. I RECEIVED A "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION" CALL FROM CHEVROLET TELLING ME THAT MY CAR MAY EXPERIENCE "LOSS OF PROPULSION" AND STOP SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING DUE TO LOW CHARGE DESPITE THE BATTERY INDICATOR SHOWING CHARGE. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR 8 MONTHS AND IS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD THAT SHOULD BE CATEGORIZED AS SUCH AND LISTED ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE. CONSUMERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE BEFORE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, BUT NOW CAN ONLY FIND OUT IF THEY BUY THE CAR AND HAVE A VIN. BEFORE I COULD ENGAGE THE BRAKE, THE CAR WENT OVER THE CONCRETE BERM SEPARATING ROWS OF PARKING SPACES AND HIT TWO PARKED CARS. ALL THREE VEHICLES WERE DAMAGED (THE VEHICLE I WAS DRIVING, AND THE TWO PARKED VEHICLES). WEATHER WAS NOT A FACTOR. THE PARKING LOT WAS DRY AND FREE OF SNOW AND ICE. THE TEMPERATURE WAS ~40F. THE CAR WAS NEW (3 MONTHS OLD) WITH ~550 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE SAME BEHAVIOR (UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION) HAPPENED ~1 MONTH EARLIER UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS, I.E., DRY, SNOW/ICE FREE WHILE TURNING INTO AN ANGLED PARKING PLACE. AFTER STOPPING, GETTING OUT AND KEYING UP AGAIN, THE CAR STAYED AT ZERO RANGE AND DISPLAYED A CHARGE NOW MESSAGE. THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED ON JANUARY 11, 2018. IN THAT CASE THE RANGE METER SHOWED ABOUT 30 MILES REMAINING. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, THERE ARE TWO PRELINIARY WARNINGS BEFORE THE THIRD MORE INSISTENT ONE. THE CAR WAS DRIVEN BY ANOTHER COLLEAGUE WHO HADN'T DRIVEN IT BEFORE, AND HE WASN'T SURE IF HE MISSED THE FIRST TWO WARNINGS OR NOT. HE WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH ON THE FREEWAY AT THE TIME THE VEHICLE "STALLED" FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD. THE RANGE WENT TO NOTHING, THE VEHICLE DROPPED IN SPEED SIGNIFICANTLY (NOT A PURE STALL) AND HE HAD TO MOVE THROUGH LANES TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AMID FASTER TRAFFIC. BECAUSE OF THE UNCERTAINTY ABOUT WARNINGS HE MAY HAVE MISSED (I DON'T THINK THEY'RE SUBTLE ENOUGH TO MISS, SO IT IS MY VIEW THEY NEVER HAPPENED) WE TALKED OURSELVES OUT OF A DEALER VISIT. WE TOWED IT TO A NEARBY LEVEL 3 FAST CHARGER INSTEAD, AFTER WHICH IT PERFORMED NORMALLY. SUBSEQUENT ONSTAR E-MAIL HEALTH REPORTS HAVE DESCRIBED THE BATTERY AS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE MOST RECENT OF THESE WAS FEBRUARY 7TH, WHICH IS INTERESTING BECAUSE ... THEN, ON FEBRUARY 8, 2018, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME THE VEHICLE WENT FROM 60 MILES TO NOTHING. SAME ISSUE: DRASTICALLY REDUCED POWER WITH NO ADVANCED WARNING, MANEUVERING THROUGH FASTER TRAFFIC TO A FREEWAY EXIT RAMP. THE CAR CAME TO A HALT ON THE LONG EXIT RAMP. IT WAS TOWED TO A DEALER, WHERE IT NOW SITS. I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED A SERIVICE BULLETIN OR RECALL NOTICE FOR ANYTHING, AND AS FAR AS I KNOW THE CAR IS UP TO DATE IN THIS REGARD. THERE MAY BE TWO PROBLEMS: 1) THE BATTERY HAS A DEFECT AND 2) ON STAR HEALTH BATTERY CHECKS REPORTS ARE MEANINGLESS.

WE TOWED IT TO A NEARBY LEVEL 3 FAST CHARGER INSTEAD, AFTER WHICH IT PERFORMED NORMALLY. SUBSEQUENT ONSTAR E-MAIL HEALTH REPORTS HAVE DESCRIBED THE BATTERY AS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE MOST RECENT OF THESE WAS FEBRUARY 7TH, WHICH IS INTERESTING BECAUSE ... THEN, ON FEBRUARY 8, 2018, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME THE VEHICLE WENT FROM 60 MILES TO NOTHING. SAME ISSUE: DRASTICALLY REDUCED POWER WITH NO ADVANCED WARNING, MANEUVERING THROUGH FASTER TRAFFIC TO A FREEWAY EXIT RAMP. THE CAR CAME TO A HALT ON THE LONG EXIT RAMP. IT WAS TOWED TO A DEALER, WHERE IT NOW SITS. I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED A SERIVICE BULLETIN OR RECALL NOTICE FOR ANYTHING, AND AS FAR AS I KNOW THE CAR IS UP TO DATE IN THIS REGARD. THERE MAY BE TWO PROBLEMS: 1) THE BATTERY HAS A DEFECT AND 2) ON STAR HEALTH BATTERY CHECKS REPORTS ARE MEANINGLESS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 CHEVROLET BOLT. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, A LOUD HOWLING TYPE NOISE WAS PRESENT COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (BANKS CHEVROLET IN CONCORD, NH) WHO DISCOVERED THAT SMALL STONES HAD BECOME STUCK INTO THE BRAKING SYSTEM BETWEEN THE BACKING PLATE AND THE ROTOR. THE STONES WERE REMOVED AND THE FAILURE WAS REMEDIED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS ON BOTH THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE BRAKES.
