General Motors, Llc
NHTSA Campaign: 24V674000 SAFETY RECALL
449.7K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Sep 12, 2024
Safety Issue:

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV vehicles. The electronic brake control module software may fail to display a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Potential Risk:
Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2024. Owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N242447990.
Additional Details:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Wife is RN at a trauma hospital going to work in the morning on a busy highway. While in front of Hospital truck started to indicate to hit starter button. Truck was already running! Wife stopped at red light. Truck stopped running would not start. Stuck in middle of morning rush hour traffic had to have truck towed to dealership. At the dealership they indicated they found metal parts in the oil pan. They indicated a further look into the engine indicated it was beyond repair and had to be replaced. Truck only had 42k miles on it. They stated they had another one same situation in the shop as well and that it would take several weeks to repair. I have learned that this is a major problem with this make and model and engine. Engine quit with no warning in middle of major highway. Thank god not in an intersection or freeway.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I was driving the vehicle at approximately 45 mph when the vehicle suddenly had no engine power. There were no warning signals or symptoms of an issue that would indicate there was a problem, but the dashboard told me the vehicle needed a restart. I was able to pull the vehicle out of traffic at a cross street and coast to a stop in a parking lot. Had I not been where I was at the moment when the engine failed, or had there been oncoming traffic that would have required me to stop coasting, I would not have been able to pull safely out of traffic. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was purchased. They told me the next day that is was an internal engine failure.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On April 7th 2024 we were traveling on vacation 2 1/2 hours from home and our vehicle started making a ticking noise and traction control, engine light, service emissions, and front collision warning all came on. It was idling very rough. We had to stop for the night with our kids and take it to the closest dealer the next morning. They diagnosed the car and confirmed that the lifters needed repair. We had to leave our vehicle and get a rental to make it back home. The dealer made repairs and sent vehicle back to us. Fast forward to 1/15/25 I was on the way to work and the same thing started happening. I then had to tow the vehicle to the dealership and they have diagnosed it with the same issue on the other side of the engine. As a brand new vehicle this should not be happening. Each time we were stranded with kids and without a vehicle for a long period of time.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

While driving my family home from our christmas vacation on the Garden State Parkway (NJ) the engine shut off and would not restart. This happened on a stretch of the highway with no shoulder while traveling at 65mph. Thankfully we were able to coast far enough to a section of highway with a shoulder. This incident left my [XXX] , [XXX] , my wife and I and our dog stranded in the freezing cold 100 miles from home. After a stressful next few days the Chevrolet dealership diagnosed it as blown bearings in the motor. It has now been over three weeks and no word from GM when a new motor will be available. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

When traveling at highway speeds our vehicle suddenly lost all engine power. Driving in the passing lane of [XXX] at 75 mph our 2023 Chevrolet suburban RST 6.2 lost all engine power and went into neutral. We were barely able to make it over to the right breakdown lane without getting hit and making it with no power. We were stranded on the busy interstate for three hours with my wife and three young kids in a very dangerous location. They were scared and because we barely made it into the breakdown lane and so close to speeding traffic had to stand outside of the vehicle close to the woods further from dangerous traffic. The Suburban was flatbedded to nearest Chevrolet dealer where we were told the engine was seized and would need to be totally replaced. We were lucky to be alive but now stranded 1000 miles away from home as we were returning from a vacation in Florida. The sudden lose of all engine power traveling on the highway with our entire family was both scary and dangerous. The suburban has now been in the shop for three weeks with no date in sight to be ready and 1000 miles away. This was a truly dangerous situation and thankfully we came out unscathed but I fear someone else may experience the same type of failure and not be so lucky. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On January 1st driving east bound on road 520 in central florida. I was driving around 65mph when the vehicle suddenly shut off. The displayed showed a warning saying that something of the sort that I needed to press the brake to start the engine even though I was driving normally. I had to coast to the side of the road and I pressed the brake. once the brake was engaged the vehicle immediately went to park and will not start. I press the ingition button and the screen would go blank and no sound or warnings were displayed. I had to call the police to provide a safety as the vehicle was in a very dangerous area and all my family was on the vehicle. the police laid down flares and I contacted a tow truck using onstar. Onstar was unable to communicate with the vehicle to diagnosed the issue and no warnings or errors were displaying. The vehicle was towed to Carl Black Chevrolet of Orlando Florida. The dealer stated that the engine is locked (L87) and was not able to turn, therefore the vehicle does not start. The dealership technicians have informed that the vehicle needs a new engine and GM needs to approved, the vehicle is still under warranty and I've contact GM and until today, 17 days later, GM has not responded or allowed the dealership to fix my vehicle.

Additional Notes:

Defect Description:

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

While driving our 2023 Chevrolet Duramax diesel suburban, I was waiting, at a complete stop, against the median to make a U turn. When the traffic cleared, I began the turn when I suddenly noticed a nearly complete loss of power, hesitancy of engine engagement, and little response to the gas pedal being depressed. Then an error message appeared on the dashboard stating "Low acceleration warning". There was very little acceleration power available. The rear wheels seemed to spin. I was perilously endangered while making a U-turn across lanes because of this loss of power. The vehicle was then taken immediately to our local Chevrolet dealer who diagnosed a error code message (P0700, 0747) related to transmission valve and injectors. We are very concerned that this was a dangerous occurrence and should be further investigated. We have a 30-year history of Suburban ownership, however this is our first diesel model. We have never had problems of this significance, or seen this error message before. Since this diesel Suburban is nearly new, we are particularly concerned about the durability and safety of this vehicle. Please see attached servive report. The AC compressor was also failed and replaced

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

The fitting on the fuel pressure regulator on the engine began to separate from the housing and started spraying fuel all over the firewall and the fuel ran down the firewall onto the exhaust pipes. No check engine light signaled. The only way I knew that it was spraying, was I started to smell raw fuel through the air conditioning vents. Luckily I was able to get it to a dealer before any fuel caught fire. The dealer repaired it but GM stuck me with half of the bill for the repair. I have pictures of the failed part if necessary. This is extremely dangerous to anyone that may not pay attention to car issues unless a check engine light comes on.
