Recall Date: Dec 10, 2020
Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Accord Sedan, Accord Hybrid, and 2019-2020 Insight vehicles. A software error may cause intermittent or continuous disruptions in communication between the Body Control Module (BCM) and other components. This may result in malfunctions of various systems such as the windshield wipers and defroster, rearview camera, exterior lights, audible warning of a stopped vehicle, and power window operation. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 103, "Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems" and number 111, "Rear Visibility" as well as FMVSS numbers 104, 108, 114, 118, and 305.

Potential Risk:
Various system malfunctions such as inoperative windshield wipers, defroster, rearview camera, or exterior lighting can increase the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will update the BCM software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 22, 2021. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is X95.

Defect Description:

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

My vehicle is a 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid with 12,075 miles on the odometer. I was driving to work in the morning of 09/22/2021. The condition was dry and the outside temperature was around 60 degrees. I was merging onto the interstate in sport mode when all-of-the-sudden my car went into a limp mode. The check engine light began flashing and car lost 90% of its power. The engine made a knocking noise and began to shudder violently. I tried to switch it out of sport mode to get it back into Eco but the message displayed on the dash said something like "Unavailable at this time." I was about a mile and a half away from work and was able to creep along the road to make it there as it was losing more and more power. When I got to work (with the engine still running) I lifted the hood and the engine was still shaking hard. I scheduled an appointment with the local dealership to have it looked at that afternoon at 2:00 pm. When I drove it to the dealership 3 miles away, the check engine light was no longer flashing and the engine seemed to run fine. When I called the service advisor later that afternoon to check the status of my car he told me, "The technician drove the car around with the scan tool plugged into it and it drove fine. He wasn't able to pull any codes from the PCM." I find it to be odd. In my experience, whenever the CEL illuminates, a malfunction code will be stored in the PCM until it is cleared. Why would Honda program the PCM to reset and hide the malfunction code so that we're not able to diagnose the issue? I did take the car into the dealership earlier this year to get a warranty battery replacement and to perform 2 recalls (one was an emission recall and the other was for the BCM).

Defect Description:

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

Potential Consequences:

[XXX] Yesterday around 11:15AM CDT I was traveling north at 45 MPH right lane (4 lane road) no other cars around me (neither ahead, to the side or behind) and just before I reached a tree shaded spot on the road the Break Alert light started flashing and the Automatic Emergency Braking System engaged and slammed on the brakes (seemed like it cut the gas or electric power to the engine as my foot was on the accelerator pedal). It jarred my body and later in the evening my neck started to tighten up so I must have incurred whiplash. I looked on line and saw that there has been a class action case filed in 2019 about Honda’s ASBS engaging with no other vehicle around citing several other instances similar of what happened to me yesterday. When I went to unload my groceries that I had just purchased and placed in the cargo netting in the cars trunk, the force of the hard stop was so great that it pulled the clip that was holding the cargo netting out. I’ll attach a couple of pictures (clip that popped out is circled in red.) I’ve not contacted my doctor yet about the whiplash. Started putting cold and hot on my neck and taking Aleve. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:INFOTAINMENT

Potential Consequences:

I have had issues with the display turning off while vehicle is in motion. I have had this issue since I purchased the vehicle and have addressed the concern each and every time it has been serviced. They "reset" the software and say that will take care of it, but it never does. This has been a hazard from the beginning. Now, my car won't turn on but all the lights come on including every warning notice on the panel. I see now that there is a recall which I am taking it in for tomorrow. This vehicle is proving to be a lemon.

Potential Consequences:

LOUD HUMMING/WHINING NOISE OCCURS WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 35-50 MPH. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THIS EAR SPLITTING NOISE IS TO CRACK A WINDOW. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, IT IS A KNOWN-ISSUE WITH THE AUTOMATIC NOISE CANCELLING SYSTEM IN 2018 HONDA ACCORDS AND LATER. HONDA HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIX THIS ISSUE IN OVER 3 YEARS. IT IS EXTREMELY DISTRACTING TO THE DRIVER, NOT TO MENTION UNSAFE TO HAVE TO DRIVE WITH THE WINDOW OPEN IN FREEZING TEMPERATURE AND RAIN. IT HAPPENS TO ME ALMOST EVERY TIME I DRIVE, ESPECIALLY IN TEMPERATURES BELOW 50 DEGREES.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

THE 2018 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID'S ACTIVE NOISE CANCELING (ANC) SYSTEM IS FLAWED. THE CAR HOWLS, ROARS AND CAN EVEN PRODUCE A LOUD BOOM AT CERTAIN CONDITIONS (IE. LIGHT ACCELERATION, ENGINE RPMS ~2250, COLDER TEMPS (<50DEGF), STARTING @ 30+MPH BUT WORST IS @ ~52MPH). I TOOK THE CAR INTO MY LOCAL HONDA DEALER WHO CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, AFTER THEY CHECKED THE INTERNAL CAR MICROPHONES WERE OK (PER A HONDA SERVICE BULLETIN TEST, ...SO HONDA AMERICA KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM), THEY STOPPED WORK AND TOLD ME HONDA CORPORATE WON'T LET THEM REPLACE THE ANC, BECAUSE APPARENTLY THE TECHNICIAN'S AUDIO RECORDING OF THE PROBLEM IN MY CAR WASN'T SUFFICIENTLY ADEQUATE. NOTE: I FIND THIS PROBLEM IS REPEATEDLY DISCUSSED ON THE VARIOUS 2018-20 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID FORUMS WITH MANY FRUSTRATED OWNERS. LIKE MANY ON THE FORUMS, I ASKED (AND PAID FOR) THE HONDA TECHNICIAN TO DISCONNECT THE ANC. WHILE THE LOW SPEED ROAD NOISE IS MUCH HIGHER, THE ROAR, HOWLING AND OBNOXIOUS BOOM IS GONE. IT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO GET MY QUIET CAR BACK SOMEDAY. CAN NHSTA HELP? NOTE: IF NEEDED, I CAN UPLOAD THE HONDA DEALER SERVICE DOCUMENTS WRT ABOVE, PLEASE ADVISE, THANKS
