NHTSA Campaign: 18V663000 SAFETY RECALL
54 Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Sep 27, 2018
Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Honda Civic and CR-V vehicles. The magnet that controls the torque sensor output signal for the electronic power steering system may not be properly secured, allowing the magnet to become dislodged. During a full lock turn, the dislodged magnet may cause steering assist to be applied in the opposite direction.

Potential Risk:
The unintended steering input reduces vehicle maneuverability and increases the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gearbox assembly, free of charge. The recall began November 9, 2018. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are C2N, P2O.

NHTSA Campaign: 18V266000 SAFETY RECALL
69 Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Apr 26, 2018
Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback and Civic Type R vehicles. Driver and front passenger seatback pads sold as replacement service parts were made without slit openings for the seat-mounted side air bags. In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the seatback pad would interfere and adversely affect air bag performance. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection."

Potential Risk:
If the seat-mounted air bags cannot not deploy correctly in the event of a crash, there would be an increased risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front seatback pads, free of charge. The recall began June 15, 2018. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is E1D, U1B, and X1C.

Recall Date: Nov 9, 2017
Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe vehicles. The right halfshaft may have been improperly heat treated, reducing its strength.

Potential Risk:
The improper heat treatment can result in the halfshaft breaking, preventing the engine from moving the vehicle, and can allow a possible roll away situation if the parking brake is not engaged. This can increase the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the halfshaft's serial number, replacing it as necessary and aligning the front wheels, free of charge. The recall began December 8, 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is K0E.

Potential Consequences:

I drove home from work today like normal. Pushed the engine start/stop button before getting out of the car. The radio was still on, and the dash was still on, with Accessory Mode, push "start/stop" twice to turn off, or something similar to that. I pushed the button twice. It went to accessory mode. I started the engine, drove the car out of the drive way, came back, pushed the button to turn off the car... accessory mode. turned the car on, turned the car off.... accessory mode. Moved the keys all away from the car. Started the car (which i could do because it WAS STILL IN ACCESSORY MODE) and drove the car, meanwhile there was a big warning saying there was no key fob in the proximity. Parked the car, pushed the on/off button.... accessory mode. I have tried everything I can think of, the car wont lock. It wont exit accessory mode unless its in full on start. Someone could come along and steal my car because I cant turn it off. all i can do is disconnect the battery and after 2-3 days i connect it and it works just temporarily. This is not ok and unsafe especially when i have a new born and stranded in the middle of the wors place due to this issue.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

Steering feels like it is sticking slightly left of center. Noticing it more as weather is becoming warmer. It happens at slower speeds, but is more noticeable when I’m driving at faster speeds. When making small adjustments while driving, the steering wheel seems to stick/not operate smoothly. When it gets past the sticking point, it causes oversteer, making me have to overcorrect in the opposite direction. It feels very unsafe to drive, especially at higher speeds. Upon researching, I see this is a common problem and that there are recalls within my year model for this exact issue, but, upon searching my VIN, it doesn’t seem my car is included in the recall. I’m terribly concerned that this defect in the steering is going to lead to an accident. Hopefully, since I’m seeing many of this issue reported in cars not currently included in the recall, the recall will be expanded to include all of our vehicles.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

When I am driving going above 40 miles per hour, the steering wheel has a slight resistance when making minor corrections. When trying to correct direction in a lane to stay straight, the steering wheel sticks, or catches, and when you get it to move it makes a jerking motion. This is a safety concern, because I am worried that this will ultimately result in an accident as the issue gets worse. My local Honda dealer, as well as a reputable local mechanic have reproduced the issue. The issue first appeared within the last year to two years.

Once the additional force overcomes whatever is causing the sticking issue it results in excess steering input which has to be corrected in the opposite direction to avoid running off the road or engine another lane. STEERING

Potential Consequences:

I have 2017 Honda Civic. March 2023 the electronic power steering was faulty, and the dealership replaced it under warranty. February of 2024, the replacement EPS rack showed signs of sticking and jerking the same manner the original EPS did. Throughout the last year, the steering sticks when driving in curves. Same local dealership that did the first replacement while it was under warranty, now cannot find anything wrong when they drive it and put it on the diagnostic machine. In freezing temperatures of 32 degrees and below, the steering doesn't stick, but temperatures above 45 degrees, the steering sticks every time in a curve. There is something wrong with these EPS racks and I believe when they replaced the original rack, they replaced it with another faulty rack and I am having the same problems and I drive in fear daily and no one is listening to us. I've read the other same exact complaints on this website regarding this issue and most of them are within the last several months. I need someone to help me before the steering rack causes me to crash.

Defect Description:

LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST

Potential Consequences:

The Power Steering Rack Assembly had to be replaced on my vehicle because the sensors that notify the safety systems of the direction the steering wheel is pointing failed while I was driving my son to school. The result of this failure caused a multiple system failure resulting in an inability to steer the car at speed. The Lane Keep Assist system was actively fighting against my driver input as I was driving, effectively locking the steering wheel in a stationary position. This failure not only put my and my son's life in danger but other drivers on the road as well. This could have very easily caused a severe collision considering the ability to steer a motor vehicle is arguably the most integral part of operating one. The car has decently low mileage for being 7 years old and is well-maintained. This issue occurred suddenly without any prior warning lamps, messages, etc.
