What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? - Our call has stalled 3 times within a month. I looked online to see what could be the issue. It states there is a recall for a fuel pump issue but I looked online and it is saying our VIN isn't effected? I don't see how that would be the case if we are having the issue many others have noted. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? - It has stalled while trying to pull out of a parking lot and shuts off. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - Not yet. It is random. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - I have an appointment with them in a couple weeks. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? - No it has lost propulsion while we have been on road trips but never any lights.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On May 1, 2022, While driving on the thruway, numerous alert lights lit up on the dashboard. The engine began to knock and thump and lost power. I coasted through traffic to the side of the thruway and shut the engine off (dangerous). Upon restarting the knocking noise restarted and I shut it down and had it towed to the Honda dealership. Diagnosis: Blown engine. I had the tech disassemble the engine to determine cause, which was identified as the "number 1 connecting rod wore journal on side of crank". Pieces of the engine internals were found in the oil drip pan. Since then, I have read of: Honda is recalling certain 2016-2022 Acura MDX, 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2018-19 Honda Odyssey, 2016 and 2018-19 Honda Pilot, and 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgeline models. These vehicles all use the same 3.5L engine. My Pilots model was excluded from this recall. In a recent USA today article it was stated that NHTSA was investigating years excluded from this recall. The investigation announcement into the 1.4 million vehicles says that the safety administration received 173 complaints from drivers whose cars were not included in the recall.

Defect Description:

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

My 2017 Honda Pilot has been experiencing significant RPM surging and juddering between 10-45 MPH, accompanied by "Transmission System Problem" and "Emission System Problem" warning messages. Timeline of Events: Initial Repair (May 13, 2024): The Billion Honda dealership in Iowa City diagnosed the issue as DTC P0776. I paid $426.10 for the repair, but the surging, juddering, warning lights, and DTC P0776 code persisted. Recommended Transmission Replacement (June 17, 2024): The dealership recommended replacing the transmission at $9,000.00. Upon contacting American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Case #[XXX]), Honda offered to cover 30% ($2,723), leaving me with a $6,277.88 bill. Highway Breakdown (November 7, 2024): The vehicle severely juddered and displayed warning messages before breaking down completely on [XXX] in Chicago, endangering my safety and others during heavy traffic. Concerns: Premature Failure: The vehicle had only 42,073 miles as of May 2024, far below the expected lifespan for a transmission, suggesting a manufacturing or design defect. Recurring Issue: Despite the repair, the DTC P0776 problem persisted, indicating a deeper quality defect. Financial Burden: It is unreasonable for a loyal customer to pay $6,277.88 for a transmission replacement likely caused by a manufacturing defect. Safety Risks: The highway breakdown highlights the severity of this issue and the danger it poses. Common Problem: Similar transmission issues (DTC P0776) have been widely reported by other Honda owners, suggesting this is not an isolated case. Requested Resolution: I request Honda to: Cover 100% of the transmission replacement costs, including taxes and fees. Reimburse the $426.10 I paid for the unsuccessful repair. Address the root cause of this defect to ensure no further safety risks. I invested significantly in this vehicle and expect Honda to uphold its reputation for quality and customer care. Please address this matter promptly. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)

Additional Notes:

My 2017 Honda Pilot has been experiencing significant RPM surging and juddering between 10-45 MPH, accompanied by "Transmission System Problem" and "Emission System Problem" warning messages. Defect Description:

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

At around 134,000 miles our Pilot started making a knocking noise on startup and during acceleration. The check engine light never came on, nor did any other dashboard warnings, and we had not experienced any troubling symptoms prior to this. Our Honda dealership diagnosed the problem as connecting rod failure requiring full engine replacement. Due to the significant cost of a new engine (>$10k) we opted to have a used engine put in ($8k). I contacted Honda corporate to make them aware of our situation since there is a recall for this exact issue on 2016 and 2018 Pilots but not 2017.
