Potential Risk:

Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2019 Honda Ridgeline and Pilot vehicles. The mounting holes for the clip that secures the right center pillar trim panel may be larger than intended. In the event of a crash necessitating right side curtain air bag deployment, the clip may not hold the center pillar trim panel in position and it may potentially interfere with the curtain air bag deployment. Potential Risk:
In the event of a crash, if the curtain air bag does not deploy as intended, it can increase the risk of injury.

Defect Description:

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS

Potential Consequences:

The forward collision warning and automatic braking system are terrible and have been terrible since we purchased our Pilot new from a dealer. The warning lights and beep go off frequently when driving on highways and surface streets, in fact it’s nearly impossible to have an incident-free trip longer than 20-30 minutes. The automatic braking system has engaged many times, causing unexpected and sudden slowing of the vehicle, which has the potential to cause confusion, loss of control, or even a vehicular accident. Making matters worse, one cannot simply disengage the system permanently; it must be turned off each time the engine is started and requires holding a button down for several seconds.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

Potential Consequences:

The front camera has gone out on the Honda pilot, but inconsistently works. It will turn on while driving and turn off while the adaptive cruise control is on. The vehicle does not have a way to bypass the camera, so then there is consistently lights and alerts on. With not being able to bypass the camera features they will automatically come on or off while driving while the camera is not working properly. This vehicle was purchased in October of 2019, and has had camera issues since January 2024. The vehicle is not even 5 years old and has consistently had problems. The fuel injectors went out at 3 years, which I would not expect to go out, and from discussion with dealership there was an extended warranty for the same year Honda Odyessy, which was not extended for the Honda Pilot, but both vehicles have the same fuel injector system.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Potential Consequences:

I was driving late at night and noticed that the headlights were not lighting the road. Upon inspection, I observed excessive amounts of moisture had accumulated on the inside of both headlight assemblies and was refracting the headlight beam resulting in extremely poor visibility placing myself and other drivers at risk for an accident and injury. It is likely that the moisture entered the headlight assemblies while I was driving in a severe thunderstorm the prior day. Much to my surprise, I learned that this is a known issue to Honda. Please see the attachment Service Bulletin number 23-024, titled “Moisture in the Headlights”. Upon review of the technical information from Honda, I learned that the cause of the moisture in the headlight is a broken seal that resulted from improper assembly of the vehicle. Please see the Service Bulletin for a technical explanation of the root cause and corrective action.

Additional Notes:

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Several times the engine automatically shut down when I stopped in traffic, but then failed to re-start. Takes several minutes of messing with it before it will allow me to restart it. Of course there was angry traffic behind me waiting... *There is already an ongoing NHSTA investigation into this issue. NHTSA Action Number: PE22005

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

When vehicle comes to stop, auto stop/start feature turns off the vehicle when brake is pressed. When brake is released the engine does not start, the car goes into park or neutral and will not move until the vehicle is shut-off and restarted after a period of time. Time varies. Dealership is blaming after-market battery, stating vehicle auto idle stop/start feature requires Honda OEM battery with specific voltage. Incident occurred in January 2024, reported at 50K mile service and again in June 2024. With both incidents there were no warning lamps, messages that appeared. Honda stated they could not recreate the issue then worked with Master techs that stated it was a battery issue. Blaming it on our specific vehicle and did not inform us of investigation of thousands of claims with this specific issue. There has been an issue with multiple occurrences when auto stop/start is engaged when stopped at light then restarted the navigation system would go blank and error No Audio Connection or the apps will remain and the No audio connection error will be on top of screen and cannot turn on any of the apps such as radio, etc.

Potential Consequences:

I have the auto restart and the engine with shuts off normally when I come to a stop when I have the system engaged. The problems begin when I take my foot off the break expecting the engine to start up again. What happens inconsistently is that when I take my foot off the brake, the engine shuts off, shifts itself into Nuetral, and I have trouble getting the engine to start up again. A number of warning messages may show up on the center console as well. Things like, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation, Brake System warnings start displaying. I can get the engine to start up again, but need to put into Park then start it. Also, I have noticed the car's collision mitigation system comes on when it restarts sometimes without actually turning off. When I disengage the system, which I do practically every time I drive the car now, everything works fine. The dealer didn't find anything when they ran a diagnostic, and keeps asking me to come in to run diagnostics,

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

The idle stop cuts the engine when stopped at lights or stop signs or traffic slow downs but does not always start back up. Twice this month I have had to open the door and then press the ignition multiple times to get the car to start again. When this happens we also get an alert that there are other features being disabled. This was an issue last year and the dealer felt it was that we needed a new battery. So we replaced that and hadn't had issues until this month. It happened on the highway this weekend during a traffic slow down, and because we couldn't get going right away we almost caused an accident.
