Defect Description:

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

The speedometer occasionally would not work. Typically all other dash features would and I could get speed through digital reading. Today, none of the dash reading work. My speedometer has the dial at 155. The digital reads 0, gas shows E, miles to empty remained at 260 for the over 10 mile drive, ramps as well as coolant didn’t register and were at 0 and C. This is a hazard as it is a safety requirement to follow the speed limit when driving. This placed myself and others in danger. You are welcome to inspect this. When I have called the dealer previously for this concern, I was told that this would need to be covered by myself. A simple internet search shows that this is a more common issue than it should be.

Potential Consequences:

Rear shocks failing due premature wear and tear. There were/are no warning lamps and there was no singular incident (eg. accident) that caused this problem that I am aware. The passenger-side rear shock started exhibiting knocking noises in August 2024 when the car was 5 yo and had approx. 85000 miles. Since, the knocking is more frequent but not louder. Also, the ride has slowly become worse over bumps. Dealer confirmed problem.

Experienced complete engine failure. Car was at a Certified Hyundai dealership 2 weeks prior for new plugs and new coil pack. Multiple point inspection with no noted issues. Driving on a 3 hour trip when suddenly the engine started knocking without an engine light or oil light coming on. Pulled over and no oil on the dip stick. The same dealership did an oil change at 86,000 miles now the car has 92,000. No oil change suggested at last visit. Sounds very similar to other recall descriptions. Please review

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

The steering on the vehicle will stop responding when turning at low speeds. The vehicle will feel like it hits the “bump stop” and then will come back to center. You can then turn past that point. This has almost cause accidents because you cannot effectively steer to avoid obstacles and cannot maneuver effectively at low speeds. It occurred randomly. Was troubleshot at dealership without resolution because they could not replicate the issue. There are no hazard lights indicating an error.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I am writing to formally submit a complaint regarding my 2020 Hyundai Palisade, which has experienced a sudden and complete engine failure. This issue poses serious safety concerns and appears consistent with widespread reports of engine-related defects in Hyundai vehicles. I purchased this vehicle in 2023 from CarMax as a used vehicle, and at the time of purchase, I signed all necessary documents, including the federally required Lemon Law Disclosure form. This document is intended to protect consumers and ensure transparency about any known issues or potential defects associated with the vehicle. At no time was I informed that my vehicle may be subject to engine-related concerns that could result in total engine failure. Recently, my Hyundai Palisade’s engine failed, requiring a full replacement. I have discovered that Hyundai has issued multiple recalls in recent years related to defective engines in various models due to manufacturing flaws that can lead to knocking, stalling, or engine seizure—all of which create serious safety hazards. Although my vehicle is not currently listed under a recall, it is highly suspicious that I am facing the exact same problem affecting thousands of other Hyundai owners. This situation is unacceptable and undermines consumer trust. I urge the NHTSA to investigate whether the 2020 Hyundai Palisade should be included in existing or new recall campaigns related to engine defects. No consumer should bear the burden of an expensive engine replacement when manufacturer defects are clearly a pattern within the brand. Please advise me of any steps I can take to formally escalate this matter and ensure Hyundai is held accountable for this serious failure.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

The vehicle has an engine flaw, which caused the vehicle engine to stop running while I was driving down a busy highway to take my children to their activities. The traffic behind me nearly slammed into the back of my Hyundai Palisade because the engine cut off without warning. There was no indication of engine trouble, no dashboard lights, no warnings at all. All the preventive maintenance was performed at the dealership, including an oil change only one month prior to this incident. Turns out the engine cut off because of lack of oil. Now I am finding out from the dealership and the manufacturer that the engine does have a known Oil Consumption issue causing the combustion chamber to need cleaning before and beyond a preventive maintenance schedule. But there still needs to be a warning light or something to inform the driver about the potential engine cut off. It is unsafe to drive, and unfair for the owner to pay for this manufacturer flaw.

Defect Description:

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

Purchased a 2020 Palisade in March of 2024 with 76k miles on it. Asked the dealership we bought it from to look at the transmission after a week of owning the car, they said it was fine. I took it to Hallmark Hyundai dealership on 9/26/24 and they would not look at it until i had the transmission fluid flushed this was at 88430 miles. It was barely making it up a hill, we had the gas pedal to the floor and it was pulling back like it was going to stall. I scheduled to have the transmission fluid flushed at a local certified mechanic and he found tons of metal shaving and chunks throughout the fluid this was done at 89368 miles. I took it to Wilson County Hyundai after this was done and they said I needed a full transmission replacement this was done at 89643. They replaced the transmission, and on my way home from picking the car up there was metal grinding sounds coming from the transmission. I called Wilson County back and they asked me to bring it back, it was back on their lot less than 24 hours later. The transmission that was sent from the manufacture was a faulty transmission. The replaced the new transmission, and the sound stopped this was done at 89730 miles. After a couple thousand miles the metal grinding came back, along with the hard shifting, gear skipping, excessive vibration between gears, going up in RPMs but not shifting. I took it Jim Johnson Hyundai and they reset the Transmission adaptive, this is not fix the problem this was done at 96497. It back in the dealership now at Wilson county with the mileage of 99000 and their service manager told me they have 5 of them on their lot right now needing new transmissions. The car has less than 100k miles on it.
