Defect Description:

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Vehicle has an excessive oil intake and it is constantly blowing out the spark plugs and coil packs causing poor performance on the vehicle overall. My vehicle's VIN number was listed as a qualifier in a class action lawsuit, but the manufacturer says it is not making the noise it needs to make in order to have it checked. Was also informed I need to pull out my spark plugs and clean them regularly because of the oil buildup. This problem has caused other problems with the performance of the car the excessive oil intake has caused countless problems terrible performance of the vehicle and is attributing to other poor performance issues. This has been an ongoing problem and have only recently been told by the dealership of this instance. Even though my vehicle is one of the ones in the extended recall because it's not making the noise they like they won't do anything about it. This vehicle is still being financed and I am refusing to pay for anything until the matter is resolved. I have a case filed with the dealership I am speaking to an attorney Monday I am processing an email to my state's attorney of Missouri and have completed the better Business bureau complaints. After phone calls service dates and emails I feel that Hyundai is not doing anything to resolve this situation whatsoever and could use any assistance from you possible.

My vehicle is burning through oil. I am getting the oil change for the highest amount of mileage, usually driving sparingly throughout the week, and still having to get oil added in between oil changes. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I purchased this car in December 2023. As 2024 happened, I had a routine maintenance check on the car. The oil was changed, all the fluids checked etc. It appeared fine. Within a year, I have to change the spark plugs twice and once again in 2025..That's isn't normal. The plugs were jet black. Oil is seeping out of the gas tank. Not natural. There is an OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE. My mechanic had typed notes on my receipt on what the problem(s) had been. Every other week, I am adding oil to my car. It isn't paid for. I would like a recall established on my car. I am [XXX] and need a reliable car. I went to one HYUNDAI dealership, provided the information my mechanic had written. Refused to give me the oil consumption test. I paid $200 or $238 for an oil change and a plug of some sort. I am aware that there was a class action lawsuit against HYUNDAI in 2022 for the same issue for my car. Money was paid to those whom had this issue ( I read). I have problems with my legs and back. I really need help. I need a recall on my car. Approximately, maybe a little less, every 5000 miles, my engine light comes on. I know a faulty spark plug shake. I can't afford to buy a new or replacement engine that work. I have never contacted NHTSA before I purchased this vehicle. I did call HYUNDAI main customer service line and was informed a recall had never been issued for this problem. Yet, numerous owners had and still have this issue along with the car hesitating at time to start. That is a problem with my as well. I am not sure of the exact date the first set of spark plugs were replaced. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

AIR BAGS

Potential Consequences:

The day after I purchased this 2018 Used Hyundai Santa Fe, the passenger air bag light came on. July 2024. I have been working with the dealership where I purchased the vehicle (Larry H Miller Chevrolet, in Murray Utah), and calling Hyundai Corporation for months. Hyundai called me every 3 days for almost 3 months with a customer update and they would say is "We have no updates". This is extremely frustrating. The main idea Hyundai Corporate office is telling me is that they don't have a contract with someone that would provide the vehicle part to fix this issue. They don't have a car part available in existence to fix this issue. This is a huge safety concern. I asked them "does that mean my passenger airbag could randomly go off while I'm driving down the road, or does this mean that my passenger airbag won't go off in case I got in a wreck?" They said that it could mean a number of things, but at this time, do not put anyone in the front seat of my car. The car part is a passenger airbag plate sensor that is underneath the passenger seat. Hyundai said there are no after market parts that are sufficient enough to put into the vehicle. Especially with it being a safety issue. How can this be on the consumer??? This is very crippling. This is a huge safety concern with no timeline for resolve. I am very mad. I have been fighting this for 9 months now.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The motor is gone in the vehicle. Oil light would blink and valves rattling right after having the oil changed. I have had the car checked by numerous mechanics and no oil leaks were found but oil levels would be low a week after the oil change. I ride around with oil in the car and have to make sure to check the oil before every trip even if it’s right around the block. I’ve had the car for a year in February and the motor went out a weeks ago. I have checked for engine recalls and have not found any but have found multiple forums of people having the same issue. A new motor for this vehicle is over $3000

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Engine with the 2.0T had a valve train malfunction possibly related to a bearing or other issues. Hyundai dealership did not determine the root cause and is denying engine replacement under the rod bearing warranty. Also as a 2nd owner they won't reimburse for any repairs. This vehicle was well maintained. 2018 with 90K miles. The engine is last known to be at the dealership but probably not available. I was not offered to get a 2nd opinion and the technician notes are vague in my opinion. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? While traveling on the interstate at 65 MPH the vehicle began to make a knocking noise and had a loss of power. The steering and breaking system also became difficult to use. I was able to get off an exit after only crawling along at a unsafe low MPH for the interstate. The vehicle stalled and lost all power while on the off ramp. I was able to glide to a stop and was ready to use the emergency brake. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Hyundai's response is that it was in there opinion that the breakdown was not due to rod bearing failure however there is not a good diagnostics of a root cause. The failure was not due to poor maintenance. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Just the dealership. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lights. Sudden loss of power following by warning lights. Loss of power steering and brakes by the time the engine stalled.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I bought my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport from Toyota of Scranton as a certified pre-owned vehicle. I was told by the sales representative, Doug, that the car had been “checked and serviced, everything down to a full tank of gas”. In March, my oil light quickly flashed. When I checked it there was low oil, so I did an oil change. In June the oil light quickly flashed again. I informed Toyota of Scranton and they recommended an oil change and changing the drain plug. They reimbursed me after I did so because I had bought the car so recently so I “likely bought it that way”. However, the issues continued and I had it looked at by Kost Tire & Auto Service to rule out a leak. On November 6, 2024 I brought it to Toyota so they could diagnose the issue, as I am still in the mileage window for my warranty. I picked up November 8, 2024 to begin a 1,000 mile oil consumption test. I brought the car back November 27, 2024 and it was established that the car was “excessively burning oil”. -- The engine has failed. -- The dealer confirmed the issue. -- The warranty company says they do not consider this issue a "mechanical failure" and will not cover the damage. -- Toyota tore down the engine and the warranty company inspected it. The car is still sitting at Toyota torn down.
