NHTSA Campaign: 22V703000 SAFETY RECALL
70.9K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Sep 19, 2022
Safety Issue:

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

Potential Risk:
A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Recall Date: Nov 30, 2016
Safety Issue:

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Sorento vehicles manufactured October 27, 2014, to August 25, 2016, and 2017 Sportage vehicles manufactured December 10, 2015, to August 26, 2016. STEERING

Potential Consequences:

For months now I have been experiencing problems with the steering wheel feeling like it's sticking while driving. It can happen on a straight roadway, but mostly notice it on curves, especially a long stretch of road. I can hold the steering wheel around a slight curve and if I need to move it to the right slightly to keep in line with the curve then it jerks a little to get out of that position. It happens every time whether moving the steering wheel left or right. Last time it happened I said I wasn't going to drive the car anymore because it's unsafe. It got stuck around a curve and took more tug on the steering wheel to get it to move the tires in the direction I needed. There's so many other complaints online about this very problem from other Kia owners around the 2017 models. I've taken it to the dealer twice for this and they never experienced the problem because they just drove around the lot and did a rapid back and forth on the steering wheel. You have to be driving it on a longer stretch of road when you can get it up to faster speeds where it's more noticeable.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

Automatic Emergency Braking Passenger Side Air Bag Smart Cruise Control System Backup Camera Forward Collision Warning Lane Departure Warning System Head lights blinked on occasion and others all stopped working at the same time which makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. Took it into the dealer and they replaced the SOP Module due to code B10055, ACU communication error tested and found module not communicating with vehicle. To replace this part it costs me 925.50 After replacing this part they ran another coding and found that the ODS mat has internal short causing failure of variant coding. This part will cost an additional $3,287 to fix. Looked online and noticed that Kia has safety Recall (SC175) for 2015-2018 Kia Sedona for the Front Passenger Seat Occupant Detection System (ODS)Harness which is the exact same part that my Kia Sorrento needs and falls in the same year built. My 2017 Kia Sorrento has only 56,000 miles on it. Kia Dealership supposedly fixed the CCS Headlights Flicker Failure which was a separate recall which was a multifunction switch but this did not fix the other sensors.

Fortunately, I was able to make it to the right lane and exit on a toll ramp before the vehicle completely stopped. Unable to restart the car. Had it towed to the closest dealership. MIDTOWN KIA, 4747 SOUTH YALE AVENUE, TULSA, OK 74135 (918) 622-3160 The Dealer determined that the engine was faulty due to a recall issue - Warranty Extension [XXX] Insurance Company referred us to KIA Corporation for Warranty Coverage On the day of engine dying there was a rattling noise prior to the incident. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My car cut off on a major highway on 12/13/2023, but luckily i was able to pull off an exit. My car stalled and wouldn't crank. Called someone out who did a diagnostic and said it was for my knock system(P1326).I was able to get it home and black smoke was coming from my tail pipe. I haven't driven the car since then. I went to Kia on 1/15/2024 to get recalls done and also inquire about my check engine light. Kia never did a diagnostic test for the check engine light. They only did recalls and sent me on my way. I called Kia and made another appointment to get a diagnostic test done on 1/20/24 and then i was told that i would need an engine replacement and my warranty doesn't cover it. Then he gives me a printout of codes which states pending and told me that p1326 code didn't show so therefore it's not covered. He tells me that it's a blockage on cylinder 4. I told him when i came to you a few days ago, i asked about my check engine light and i was ignored. Upon pulling out of Kia parking lot, i noticed a large cloud of black smoke that i didn't originally see when i brought it in and it was so cloudy that other cars had to stop because they was unable to see. Luckily i got it back home and parked it cause it's very unsafe for me to drive even tho Kia saying i can still drive it. My car burns a lot of oil even tho i don't really drive cause i work from home but evidently, every time i get oil checked it's always low so i was getting it topped-off every other month and was told by a mechanic that Kia engines burns a lot of oil and the engines no good and now look, i'm needing a new engine and i just purchased this car in 2020 and i see it's been so many services done to it before i purchased itMy car only gets up to 50mph since the engine light came on so prefer not to drive it anymore.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My car has less than 62,000 miles on it and is burning through all oil every 2000 miles. My engine is completely out of oil. I only know this because I checked it...no lights or any warning signs that it is out. I am worried my engine will seize at any given time.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

I was driving my car on a major highway and my check engine light came on. Luckily i was close to an exit so i pulled off and my car shut down. I had someone to come and check it and found out that it was my knock sensor and it gave a code#p1326. With further investigation, i see that this was on a recall. I haven't driven my car since 12/13/23 due to black smoke comes from my tail pipe and i don't think that's safe but Kia telling me i can still drive it.I contacted Kia and they tells me campaign#18V907000 isn't for my model car. When i check on KBB.com and enter my vin#, i see my year/make/model is part of this campaign.I'm just looking for some help with resolving this.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

On 12/31/23 my vehicle caught on fire while in my driveway and ignition was off. The fire started in the rear/at the hatch. Fire Department was called and extinguished. Arson investigator was called to the scene and found no fowl play. I did receive multiple recall letters for the tow hitch, which could catch fire due to corossion/electrical issues, but was told by a local dealership that I brought the vehicle to, my vehicle was not involved. Based on events, I disagree.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

We bought this vehicle new and have been the only owners. I was about halfway through an ~8 hour drive, on a highway in rural West Virginia, when the Check Engine light came on and the vehicle started making a light clicking noise from near the engine. Moments later, I heard a loud pop and the vehicle lost power (gas power, not electrical) and started gliding. Some smoke and/or steam came from the front of the vehicle. I glided over to the shoulder and several other drivers pulled over. One told me that the car was on fire and I should get out and move away. I and the others were able to see the fire under the vehicle. It appeared to be oil that ignited after engine blew. The fire went out, the other people left, and I took care of getting the vehicle towed to Freedom Kia in Morganton, WV, where it has been ever since.
