4.8M Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: May 17, 2018
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

Potential Risk:
If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.
Additional Details:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

180.5K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Feb 8, 2018
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2018 RAM 1500, 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis, 4500 Cab Chassis, and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

Potential Risk:
Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Chrysler will notify owners and dealers will update the Body Control Module software. Dealers will also test the BTSI operation, replacing the solenoid as necessary. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U11.
Additional Details:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

Potential Risk:
If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.
FREE Recall Solution:

Service ABS and traction control warnings go on and off, on and off, on and off etc to the point where the vehicle isn’t drivable. The truck has only 14k miles and is out of warranty. Took it to the dealer, they said it is a known issue and that the ABS hydraulic control unit needs replacing but it is on back order until at least January of 2023. So now I have a $60k truck that is not safe to drive and can’t even get it fixed.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

My hydraulic control unit for my abs system is malfunctioning and allows my brakes to lock up with very little brake pressure applied. The faulty abs/hcu module is a known problem with Chrysler and they refuse to issue a voluntary safety recall and replace the parts. There are also no reputable sources of a replacement part so I am unable to perform the necessary repairs on my own. The module also triggers a repeated loud auditory and visual alert continuously when operating the vehicle that is incredibly distracting to the driver and contributes to an additional unsafe environment for operating the vehicle. Additionally the faulty module also periodically kicks off cruise control uncommitted adding to the unsafe nature of the fault, especially when driving at highway speeds.

In July 2022, the esc/abs dash lights as well as the ‘service electronic brake/service ABS’ warning began intermittently flashing with resultant loss of traction control and ABS including cruise control. It would continue to activate/deactivate numerous times over the next couple of months. The dealer has identified the hydraulic control module as defective requiring complete replacement of the HCU and ABS system. Online search shows this to be a common known problem along with well over 100 complaints filed with the NHTSA regarding model years 2017-2018. Interestingly, there is a recall for this very problem for the same truck series years 2019-2022 for the same part. There are over 2500 orders for this part and my dealer is not allowed to place an order until mid February because of the backlog endangering my life to use my only vehicle that can be used in the snow this winter. Dodge is clearly not supporting its customer base with providing a known defective part replacement in a reasonable time frame forcing those that don’t have an alternative vehicle to risk their lives and those on the road around them by driving a 7000 pound vehicle that can lose control and not be able to stop given that we are now in the middle of winter.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

The ABS and Traction control lights illuminated and have received messages of "service electronic brake system" and "Service ABS system". When the vehicle was inspected at the local Dodge dealer I was told it was out of warranty and it would cost over $1800.00 to replace the ABS module and Hydraulic control unit. I have searched and have found that this is a widespread issue and people are wondering why a recall has not been issued. I have no choice but to pay out of pocket for this repair as I live in a snowy area and travel with a 2 year old and my wife. I of course do not want to use the vehicle in bad weather without ABS and traction control. Therefore my "new" to me truck sits more than I drive it as parts are on backorder. Considering how widespread this is I have to imagine that there should be a recall.
