Defect Description:

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

I recently purchased a 2022 Ram 2500 equipped with the u-connect 5 system and the 12 inch display screen. The 12 inch screen controls all radio, navigation, phone and climate functions. After driving the truck for an extended period of time, the 12 inch screen will lock up and all functions are lost. I was told by the dealer to "reset" the display by pressing the volume and tuning buttons simultaneously, and after that to do a "hard reset" through the radio controls. This does correct the problem, but it will eventually lock up again. The dealer advised me they must be able to recreate the problem to diagnose it. They also advised due to the extended drive time for the problem to occur, they would probably not be able to recreate the situation. I have contacted Ram and u-connect about the issue, and they too advise the dealer must be able to recreate the problem to fix it. They also indicated they have never had anyone else complain about the screen locking up. When I google this issue I have found numerous articles online posted by people experiencing the same issue, so I know I am not alone. My reason for contacting NHTSA is the loss of the climate controls, specifically the windshield defroster, when the radio screen is locked up. Many times in my life I have found the need to very quickly activate the front windshield defroster to maintain visibility. I am concerned if the screen is locked up, and the defroster cannot be activated, a crash may occur.

The manufacturer has failed to remedy the situation in a timely manner. As shown in this complaint forum, the recall was issued March 10. I did not take delivery until March 24 with no mention of the recall. I received the notice in the mail on April 4. The dealer says April 14 before I can get in for a 10 minute software update! So, now it's my problem! I can sit and stare at my new $75,000 truck, or I can choose to drive an unsafe vehicle. No choice when it comes time for the update, I have a 200 mile, one way drive to get to the dealer. The manufacturer and the dealer were well aware of this problem BEFORE they took my money and sent me down the road in an unsafe vehicle. I think that is criminal. Everyone is treating this as a software "glitch". For me it comes after 2 years of swapping paper with FCA in order to settle on an Eco Diesel. Remember the Eco Diesel? Makes one wonder if it's a glitch or standard business practice at FCA.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

DEF sensor malfunctions, threatening to limit vehicle to 5 mph or stop completely. This is because DEF fluid freezes in cold weather. Sensor reads that DEF tank is empty, even when it is full. Contacted local dealer who confirmed the issue and noted that it is a prevalent problem and he has a backlog of trucks with the same issue. I consider this a safety issue, as I could be stranded on the road in winter conditions or not have access to my vehicle in case of emergency. Google search shows that this is a significant issue affecting many people. Dealer said that the only solution is to put the vehicle in a heated garage for several days to defrost the DEF and allow the sensor to reset. They currently have a backlog of several weeks. And then what happens when you get it back? You hope it doesn't refreeze and strand you on the road somewhere?

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

This is a 2022 Ram 2500 Long Horn with teh 6.7L Cummings Diesel. I have owned it for 30 days and it has 1475 miles on the odometer. The Service DEF System came on and after talking with the local dealership, the DEF sensor and or DEF pump has failed due to the DEF freezing. They have explained that this is a know issue and has affected the 2019 to present model year. After doing extensive research on neumorous blogs, it is a much larger problem than the dealer is letting on. It appears to be created by a design change that took place in 2019 and is caused by the DEF fluid itself freezing in the tank damaging the DEF sensor. DEF freezes at -12 so those of us living in areas where it may hit -12 are all affected by this situation and in reality, have spend 60k plus on a vehicle that we cannot operate. Either the DEF needs to be redesigned to not freeze or Ram needs to redesign, or go back to what they had that worked, the DEF system. This is not only an emmisions issue it is also a saftey issue. If the DEF system does not work, the vehicle does not meet the current emmisions standards. If the vehicle goes into limp in mode, you have strandad customers along side the road becomming a safety hazard and if the limp in mode happens at highway speeds, who knows the effectis on the vehicle as it slows down and creats a hazzard on the highway. Please work with RAM to remedy this situation so those of us with a 61k + boat anchor can use their trucks as they intended to when they spent their hard earned money to do so.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

I purchased a brand new RAM 2500 Limited Cummins. Crew Cab, long bed. I heard online on one of the diesel truck forums that the factory was underfilling the differentials. I checked both differentials, and found that the front was at least 3/4 of a quart low on oil, and the rear was about 1/4 of a quart low. This could potentially cause a crash or wheel lockup if the differential were to fail due to being low on oil!
