NHTSA Campaign: 22V624000 SAFETY RECALL
188.4K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Aug 12, 2022
Safety Issue:

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Impreza vehicles. The left and right side reflex reflector and left side low beam reflector may inadequately reflect light. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Potential Risk:
Reflectors that do not provide adequate illumination reduce the driver's ability to see and increase the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the front headlamp assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 15, 2023. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRG-22.
Additional Details:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Potential Consequences:

I have a Subaru 2019 Impreza. When parked in my drive way on a Los Angeles winter day, I turned on my defroster and my windshield cracked at the bottom center of the glass. I assume this has to be a defect given Subarus are made for more extreme conditions.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

The windshield on this vehicle is defective. Over time for no reason scratches have appeared. Additionally now chips have occurred for no apparent reason. I have gently used an ice scraper as needed after defrosting the windshield enough to make it practical, however, my scraper is in excellent condition and was not misused. This should not cause a windshield to break down. There are also waves in the windshield that make for an uneven appearance in spots.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

I was driving at 50 mph, suddenly heard a noise coming from the windshield and saw a big crack on passenger side of the windshield. The crack grew very fast, crossing about 75 of the windshield. The two parts of the glass on the side of the crack became separated. The visibility through the windshield was impaired by the crack. This is the second time it happens to the Subaru windshield in a short time. The first time I replaced it by the original Subaru windshield and it cracked again.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

The brakes on this car squeak constantly. Even after replacing brake pads and rotors the car still squeaks every time the brakes are used. After searching the issue I have found multiple Reddit forums of 2019 Impreza owners complaining of the same issue. I have filed a complaint with Subaru and the dealership I bought the car from (brand new) and they refuse to address this issue. It is extremely concerning to have a car that squeaks constantly as if there is an actual brake issue I would not know it since the car sounds like it has an issue already. If even replacing the rotors and brake pads does not fix this issue, I am concerned that there is a bigger issue at play that may reveal itself later. I ask that Subaru be required to fully look into this issue and correct the brakes for all owners as this is not unique to me and my vehicle.

The battery dies sporadically when the car has been parked for a short time or a day or two. No telling when it will happen, but suddenly the car will not start. I have checked all the lights and keep the headlights turned off, as I don't drive at night. So far this has happened only when the car is parked, but what if it happens when I am driving? Date given below is the third incident. The others were in late January and February.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Car was purchased in October 2018. In April 2019, just six months after purchase, the windshield was hit by a small rock. This small collision caused a crack to spread across the entire windshield requiring replacement. Windshield was replaced with Original Equipment Manufacturer glass. In December 2021, just over two years later, another small rock hit the windshield causing another large crack to spread across the windshield. We are now looking to replace for the second time, in just three years of car ownership, which is ridiculous. Looking online, I see many active lawsuits regarding this issue and the integrity of the Subaru glass. Having used other car brands for many years before purchasing my first Subaru, I know that it is highly unusual for such large cracking to happen from a simple rock ding. Other cars I have used in the past would get a small indent in the glass from being hit by a rock, but it would not spread and damage the entire windshield. I see I can only submit one date below, so I will submit two of these forms, one for each date.

Additional Notes:

Car was purchased in October 2018. In April 2019, just six months after purchase, the windshield was hit by a small rock. This small collision caused a crack to spread across the entire windshield requiring replacement. Windshield was replaced with Original Equipment Manufacturer glass. In December 2021, just over two years later, another small rock hit the windshield causing another large crack to spread across the windshield. We are now looking to replace for the second time, in just three years of car ownership, which is ridiculous. Looking online, I see many active lawsuits regarding this issue and the integrity of the Subaru glass.
