Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) recalled certain 2018-2019 4Runner, Highlander, Camry, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra, and Lexus RC 300, RC 350, GS 350, GX 460, IS 300, LC 500, LS 500, LX 570, RX 350L, and 2019 Toyota Avalon and Corolla, and certain Lexus NX 300, and ES 350 vehicles on January 13, 2020. On March 4, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include certain 2014-2015 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser, 2018 Avalon, Corolla, 2014 FJ Cruiser, 2017 Sienna and Lexus 2018 ES 350, 2018-2019 GS 300, 2013-2014 GS350, 2014-2015 GX 460, IS 350 and LX 570, 2014 IS F, 2018-2019 IS 350, LC 500H and LS 500H, 2013-2015 LS 460, 2015 NX 200T and RC350, 2017 RC 200T and RX 350. Toyota also removed the 2018-2019 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser and 2018-2019 Lexus GX 460 and LX 570 and 2019 NX300 from inclusion in this recall. On March 19, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include 2015 Lexus GS350 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

Safety Issue:
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Toyota Tundra and Sequoia vehicles and 2019 Toyota Avalon and Avalon Hybrid vehicles. The air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may erroneously detect a fault during the vehicle start-up self check. If this occurs, the ECU may not deploy the airbags as intended, in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," and 214, "Side Impact Protection."

Potential Consequences:
The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that while having routine maintenance at the local dealer, he was informed that the outer seals were leaking and full of fluid. The vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the rack and pinion seals had failed. The outer seals were leaking and full of fluid. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21E103000 (Steering). The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Potential Consequences:
The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated while driving at 55 mph, the lane departure and rear cross passing warning light illuminated and the vehicle failed to turn off. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer to inspect the vehicle however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. Several months later, the failure recurred. The contact took the vehicle back to the same local dealer to be inspected. The contact was informed that the rear bumper sensor was not properly aligned to the brackets on the bumper, causing the failure. The vehicle was repaired however, the contact was concerned that at some point the failure might recur. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.

I TOOK MY 2018 TOYOTA SEQUOIA (VIN: [XXX]) ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 FOR THE SIX-MONTH TOYOTACARE SERVICE TO AMERICAN TOYOTA LOCATED AT 5995 ALAMEDA BLVD NE, ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87113 WITH THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE SIX-MONTH TOYOTACARE SERVICE WILL INCLUDE FIXING ANY PENDING SAFETY RECALL. HOWEVER, AFTER THE SERVICE, WHEN I CHECKED THE PAPERWORK, I FOUND OUT THAT THE PENDING SAFETY RECALL (MANUFACTURER RECALL: 20TA02, NHTSA RECALL: 20V012) WAS NOT FIXED AND IT WAS CLAIMED THAT THERE WERE NO SAFETY RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE VEHICLE (SEE THE ATTACHED PAPERWORK). SUNROOF EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY. I WAS DOING 65 MPH IN THE CARPOOL LANE. NO APPARENT DEBRIS FROM SURROUNDING VEHICLES. FRONT CAR WAS FAR AWAY, SIDE VEHICLES DRIVING SLOWER AND NO TRUCKS. ALL THE EDGES OF THE REMAINING GLASS ARE FACING OUTWARD AS IF THERE WAS TOO MUCH PRESSURE INSIDE THE VEHICLE.
