POWER TRAIN
Potential Consequences:
The car was purchased new and now has 1,600 miles. On nine different occasions the car has stopped moving (but has not stalled) when trying to accelerate. In two of those instances (accelerating from a red light and entering a roundabout) I nearly had an accident. I've had the car at the dealership twice and I was told that there were no codes and the car was operating normally. I've found an internet post made by someone having the same issue. I'm not a mechanic, but my impression is that the transmission inadvertently temporarily thinks it is in neutral. This is a genuine safety issue.

Potential Consequences:
Volkswagen increased the tire diameter of the Taos S 4motion and Taos SE 4motion for 2024 and either did not recalibrate the speedometer or made an error when doing so. Some variants of the VW Atlas might have a similar issue (two reports so far). Because of this corporate negligence, the speedometer reads about 5% LOW. At an indicated 70 MPH the vehicle is actually traveling nearly 74. If exceeding the speed limit kills, then this is a safety issue. It definitely leads to people breaking the law without realizing it. I personally got a speeding ticket as a result. I thought the officer was lying about my speed--but he wasn't. The speedometer was lying. I've asked other owners of these Taos models to check, and every one that has checked (about ten so far) reports the same exact error--it's by design, not just one or two vehicles. A speedometer that reads low is not even legal in the EU. It might be legal in the US, but should not be. The regulation probably dates to a time when speedometers were entirely mechanical and could lose accuracy over time. In this case VW could have properly calibrated the speedometer but did not due to either negligence or incompetence. Perhaps it simplifies the manufacturing process, by letting them use one calibration for multiple tire sizes, and they're taking advantage of the leeway provided by a lax, outdated American regulation. It is an entirely avoidable problem, and indicates that VW does not care about the impact on its American customers. This problem only appears to affect models that are not sold in Germany, where the inaccuracy would be illegal. Please update the regulation and require VW to properly calibrate their speedometers to eliminate the harm being done to American drivers. I have photos and video to substantiate the speedometer inaccuracy. Let me know if this would help. You can replicate the issue yourself with any 2024 Taos S 4motion or SE 4motion with 215/55R18 tires.

Defect Description:
ENGINE
Potential Consequences:
Malfunction: Acceleration failure from a full stop. on [XXX], with approx 300 miles on the vehicle, I needed to pull onto the two lanes going my direction on right. On my left was a wide curve blinded by large full trees on [XXX] in Delaware with traffic running 55-65ish. It was a doable look-twice then hustle situation. Waited for traffic to clear, nothing in sight, pulled out fuller throttle but it crawled...immediately I went full throttle with no effect as it continued to steadily crawl for several long seconds until turbo activated. This was way outside of normal-clearly I had been placed in a dangerous situation but thankfully no traffic approached before full speed was obtained. There have been no warning lamps or messages. As for possible symptoms prior to the incident, I had complained to the dealer, day after purchase about the amount of lagging and lunging I was beginning to take notice of, as well as when accelerating from lower gears, it wanted to pull back - like a tap on the brakes. Two workers test drove, expressed experiencing this and determined issue was attributed to being in 'ECO mode' and recommended/showed how to change to regular 'driving mode', which helped but not significantly. Just as easily the children could have been riding with me in the car seats as they often do. This incident was disturbing and I take it seriously. On [XXX], this repeated itself to a lesser yet unacceptable degree taking a right from a standstill on [XXX] in Danville PA. These I reported to the dealership on 7/19 and reported 2nd incident on 7/29 at first scheduled service visit. The incidents have not reproduced themselves so not confirmed by the dealer...no fault codes were identified in ECM, no further diagnostics were performed. My printer doesn't scan-please send me the address so I can mail you a copy of the first service visit 7/30 to be attached to this report. Potential Consequences:
I am writing to bring to your urgent attention a troubling issue I've encountered with my recently leased 2024 VW Taos, which I obtained in March 2024. This vehicle was meant to be a birthday gift to myself, a gesture of personal and professional advancement as I pursue my career as a home inspector. However, since the day I drove off the lot, I have been faced with a persistent and potentially hazardous problem: the CarPlay Apple Play GPS system has been malfunctioning, redirecting with every single use. I took immediate action by returning to the Volkswagen shop services, expecting a prompt resolution. To my dismay, I was met with a disheartening response. The technicians informed me that they were unable to rectify the situation, attributing the issue to my carrier cell tower and the vehicle system. Such a dismissive response not only fails to address the severity of the problem but also disregards the fundamental purpose of a vehicle's navigation system: to ensure safe and efficient travel. As a black man working in a demanding profession such as home inspection, the reliability of my vehicle's GPS system is paramount to my safety. Being redirected unexpectedly due to a GPS malfunction poses not only inconvenience but also potential danger, particularly in unfamiliar areas. Furthermore, as a consumer, it is deeply unsettling to pay for a vehicle that falls short of basic expectations in terms of functionality and reliability. The response from Dick Hannah VW shop service, stating that they cannot address this issue, is wholly unacceptable. As the manufacturer of the vehicle, they bear the responsibility of ensuring that their products meet the highest standards of quality and safety. To dismiss a critical issue such as a malfunctioning GPS system as beyond their control is not only irresponsible but also undermines the trust and confidence of consumers.
