Safety Issue:

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The battery positive (B+) cable rings may have been manufactured with excessive glue, potentially causing an intermittent electrical connection between the B+ cable and alternator.

Defect Description:

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

I have a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ. 5.3 Ecotrac 8 transmission with 89,000 miles. I bought it used and have had it 12 months, but only drove it 9 before it malfunctioned causing severe electrical & mechanical problems. I was driving the truck when the EPB, service engine, stabilitrac, ECBM warning lights came on, also driving over 43 miles an hour could cause a crash due brake failure This caused the emissions. transmission, & throttle to shut down Truck would not shift out of low gear. It would shift to park but did not recognize it was in park which kept the accessory on running down the battery, the tail gate would not open, and the information system shut down. I got sick and was in the hospital for 5 weeks, the truck was vandalized. The body repair shop took it to the chevrolet dealership in long beach to have it inspected. I did not tell them the vehicle had malfunctioned, throwing code U0101 and another code. I wanted the dealer to find the problem, the truck had not been driven since it was parked from the malfunction. All they came back with was I had a burnt cylinder and would be 9000 to fix due to maintenance, we maintained this truck changing the oil every 3000 miles with Castoroil synthetic oil, regularly checking and maintaining transmission, brake , all-fluids. Supposedly they ran a diagnostic, if they did they would have found these warnings and that main code U0101 would have showed up. When it happened Onstar ran the diagnostic and told me to take it immediately to a dealership. That dash should have lit up like a christmas tree that’s how many light were going off. The dealership never said a thing about these lights. Now i’ve read where Chevy had a problem with the EPB and only put them on this model from 2019 to 2022 because of this. I found on other sites recalls that included what happened to my truck, but not in your web sight. There was major design and manufacturing flaw with this model and year. I’ve read complaints on this.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On [XXX] I was driving in Beloit WI. Luckily I was in town and only doing 30-35mph and not another mile because I was headed for the interstate and we all would have died, because all of the sudden my parking brake locked on, my check engine light, ABS light, traction control light all came on and gray smoke just started pouring out my exhaust. Had it towed to my usual mechanic, it had 38 different codes on it, he worked on it for 8 hours and said it needed to go to a dealership. Towed it to a dealership, lifter on cylinder 5 went out and I was told "Yes camshaft is destroyed on that cylinder.. just need one. But tech would pull engine out and pull apart… or replace engine as does not include the fact that oil pump the timing chain the timing chain tensioner, the rod bearing the main bearings, and most importantly the camshaft bearings are still gonna be old and original to your engine. If you replaced just a camshaft. So later on down the road, something there could fail and more than likely the oil pump but again it’s just more money and more what else but if you are going to commit to that then you probably should commit to timing, chain, and oil pump, and everything else in which case now you start adding all the prices of that components in with labor on top of it, and an engine in my opinion would probably be better" and the engine comes with 100k mile warranty. So there's that. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6

The contact then noticed an oil leak onto the rear driver's side bumper, wheel well, and on the running board. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact related the failure to GM Campaign Number: N212326940. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there was no guarantee that assistance would be provided in covering the repair. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 54,523.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

While exiting the highway from 70MPH my truck quit running on the exit ramp as I approached the end of the ramp. The truck would not restart and blocked traffic until I was able to get a tow truck. After the truck was towed back to my home I was able to scan the truck and found P129F code reporting (Fuel Pump Driver Control Module Fuel Pump Speed Signal Incorrect) (see attached report). Only after purchasing a Fuel Pump Driver Control Module from the dealer (P/N) 13565641 (replacement for the original 13531875 P/N) and installing it would the truck start. This was a real safety concern as other driver were also exiting the highway at speed while my truck was blocking a lane. The fuel pump control modules should be designed in "fail safe" way to allow the fuel pump to continue even if it isn't running at the most optimal level.

Defect Description:

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The 8-speed automatic transmission is experiencing a persistent shudder during normal driving conditions. The problem appears to stem from a failing torque converter and possibly the valve body, as diagnosed by a GM dealership. The dealership also found metal debris in the transmission fluid, indicating internal damage. The vehicle is currently available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The transmission shudder causes the vehicle to hesitate and lurch unexpectedly, especially during acceleration or gear shifts at highway speeds. This creates unpredictable vehicle behavior that could result in a loss of control, especially when merging, changing lanes, or driving in heavy traffic. It presents a significant safety concern for both the driver and others on the road. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the problem has been confirmed by a GM dealership. They recommended replacing the torque converter and valve body due to internal damage and fluid contamination. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes, the vehicle has been inspected and diagnosed by a GM-authorized dealership. It has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps or dashboard messages appeared. The issue began with a noticeable shuddering and harsh shifting during normal driving, which gradually worsened. Symptoms include rough gear changes, hesitation, and vibration, most noticeable between 25–55 mph under light acceleration. These symptoms began approximately 2 months ago and have become more frequent.

Potential Consequences:

Sliding rear window leaks in 3 spots. Leak poses the safety risk of mold growth inside the vehicle along with the potential of water getting inside of electrical components and air bag device compartments. The problem was reproduced and confirmed at the dealership, to which the plastic seal at the top of the rear window was confirmed to have failed in 3 locations. Dealership recommended replacing the entire back window and assembly with what they believe to be the same window assembly that failed. The only inspection completed on the vehicle to date has been the dealership GM certified technicians. Musty smell after rain and observed staining on the headliner is when the issue was first identified.
