NHTSA Campaign: 17V824000 SAFETY RECALL
61.8K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Dec 21, 2017
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

Potential Risk:
If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.
FREE Recall Solution:
Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. Potential Consequences:

As I was driving about 45MPH my car dropped down to a lower gear. It stayed there until I pulled over and turned off the car. I started it back up and it was fine. It ran good for about two miles or so and did it again. I stopped into a Chy dealership and they said it was the solenoid in the transmission. They said they had problems with this on other town and country vans. My van only has 72000 miles on it.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Early 2021 the driver's side sliding door would not open from the outside or from the inside. At this time the passenger side sliding door was working. In May 2021 I took it to an independent service facility. They replaced the door latch assembly and checked the wiring. The door then opened and closed inconsistently. I took it back and this time It worked by using the key fob, the door button and the above dash button; but when opening it manually it did not slide on its own. Also at this time the passenger side door stayed in an unlocked position and could be opened when all doors were supposed to be locked. Sometimes the door alarm would go off when it was opened this way and sometimes it didn't. At this point I took it to the dealership (7-29-2021). I was told the prior service center used a Mopar part and they would put it under warranty and replace it but I would be charged for labor. The passenger side door latch assembly would also have to be replaced, bringing the total to over $1,900. Estimated date of completion is 8-3-2021. This is definitely a safety problem since the door could not be opened from the inside and passengers in the back would not be able to open it under an emergency situation.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

My van only has 59,400 miles on it. We were on vacation stopped at a stoplight, when the light turned green, I stepped on the gas pedal, the engine would rev up and there was a high pitched sound, and then the van would jerk forward. The van exhibited difficulty with shifting. No warning lights came on before this incident, only after the van started to exhibit difficulty shifting. Codes noted: P0734-Gear Ratio Error in 4th P0868-Line Pressure Low P0745-Gear Ratio Error in 5th P083B-LC Pressure switch rationality P1790- Fault Immediately After Shift P0944-Loss of hydraulic Pump Prime I had to have my van towed to a Chrysler dealership they noted that the transmission fluid pump line pressure was only getting to 25 psi and loud whine from pump. Debris noted in the pan. Transmission was replaced with reman due to debris in the pan and replaced trans cooler and flushed transmission lines. Had I kept driving my van, it could have easily stalled in an intersection. If that would have happened, my family could have easily been hit by on-coming traffic. There is a recall S44 for 2016 Chrysler Town and Country Vans for this exact thing happening to the transmission. I do not understand why my van is not included in the recall. My van only has 59,400 miles, this should not happen.

Potential Consequences:

On 3 July 2021 the driver side rear sliding door became inoperable. The door would not open using either the electronic motor or by manually pulling the handle and sliding the door. The door lock appeared to be jammed in the locked position and could not be unlocked either electronically or manually. Not being able to open the rear door in any manner is unsafe and in the event of an accident would not allow access or egress to passengers in the rear of the vehicle. I had an independent ASE Certified Master Mechanic asses the issue. The only way to get the door open was to remove the door panel from the inside and manually push the lock actuator back into the correct position. Upon further inspection and testing it was noted that flipping the child safety lock back and forth several times seemed to have reset the actuator and the lock and door has worked correctly since.
