Ford Motor Company
NHTSA Campaign: 22V413000 SAFETY RECALL
2.9M Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Jun 10, 2022
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

Potential Risk:
A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

Recall Date: Aug 11, 2020
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Ford Edge and 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles. The front brake hoses may rupture prematurely.

Potential Risk:
A ruptured front brake hose will cause a brake fluid leak, lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front brake hoses with the new hoses that have a revised braid material, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim letter notifying owners of the safety risk was mailed September 21, 2020. A second letter will be sent once parts are available, which is expected to begin April 15, 2021. NHTSA Campaign: 19V632000 SAFETY RECALL
116.2K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Aug 29, 2019
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015-2016 Ford Edge, and 2016 Lincoln MKX vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Road salt or other contaminants may corrode the electric power steering gear motor attachment bolts.

Potential Risk:
If the bolts corrode, the steering gear motor may detach from the gear housing resulting in a loss of power steering assist, requiring a greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds, and increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear motor bolts and apply a wax sealer. If any of the steering gear motor attachment bolts are broken or missing, a new steering gear will be installed in the vehicle. These repairs will be performed free of charge. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Potential Risk:
During deployment, if the air bag does not fully inflate or the cushion detaches, there is an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured February 9, 2015, to August 12, 2016. During dealer servicing, the affected vehicles may be have been updated with incorrect Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software. This software can cause the ESC system to lose engine torque control, and not provide any warning lamps to warn the driver if there was an ABS or ESC system malfunction. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems" and number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Potential Risk:

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I own a 2016 Ford Edge SEL AWD Ecoboost with all of the symptoms of the TSB that Ford released on June 9, 2022 (2.0L EcoBoost - Coolant In Cylinders, White Exhaust Smoke And/Or Illuminated MIL). I brought it for service at Palm Springs Ford in September and received a very large estimate (approx $13,000) to replace the engine, motor and transmission mounts, etc. This is not something that I had expected nor can afford at this time. I see no recall available for this issue. The vehicle is seven (7) years old with 75,932.4 miles and I cannot imagine that coolant leaks and engine failures are a normal feature for a car of this age and with this mileage. I planned to drive this car for several more years and I am disappointed in Ford’s lack of quality control/assurance.

WHEELS

Potential Consequences:

I went to have tires rotated and an alignment done to the 2016 Edge. The mechanic came in and told me we had a problem with the lug nuts have enlarged and they could not get them off and when they would get them off they would be damaged and not be able to put the back on the car. They had to force the tool on the lug nuts to get them off. Some of them the caps were loose when they got them off too. I had to spend 68.00 to get new lugs so i could get out of the place. They showed me and they were severely out of shape and were not safe. I am a widow who takes car of father and if we would have had problems on the road i would not of been able to change the tire. Something needs to be done about this. I checked the ford website and see manny people have complained over the same issue. So let me know what you plan to do about this dangerous issue!

Potential Consequences:

I had my vehicle serviced (oil change, tire rotation, fluid levels topped off) before we took a trip to Florida from Massachusetts. On the way home from the trip we experienced no heat in our vehicle so we had the vehicle checked out thinking maybe the thermostat needed replacing. Instead the repair shop found the coolant level down by over 1 gallon. They performed a pressure check for leaks and found none. They informed me that there was a for the 2016 Ford Edge. We found an article on line that stated TSB [XXX] superseded TSB [XXX]. I then went to my Ford Dealer to explain the issue that we experienced the issues associated with that TSB and they informed me that my vehicle had no recalls. Ford informed me that it depended on build dates which seems odd when the issue covers several years of this make and model how can it come down to a single date. We got no warning lights lights just the white smoke from the exhaust as well as the loss of a lot of coolant. Looking for direction on how to proceed, I feel this should be covered by Ford because of the numerous issues reported as well as low mileage for the 7 year old vehicle. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Potential Consequences:

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal would depress to the floorboard as the brake fluid warning light would appear on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics where the brake master cylinder, brake calipers, brake booster, and ABS system were all replaced; however, the failure returned soon after each repair. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer where the vehicle was serviced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V469000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulics); however, the repair failed to correct the brake issue. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My vehicle began to have a very low idle when first starting it. Within a week or so the check engine light came on. The day after the light came on, my vehicle almost didn't start up and so I took it to the dealership. I was told that my engine was no longer good due to coolant intrusion into the cylinder and that my car needed a new engine at less than 70,000 miles. My vehicle has been serviced and maintained by Ford since it was new. Ford agreed to pay for 40% of the total cost ($7,615).

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Vehicle is suffering from the known Ford 2.0 EcoBoost Engineering defect "coolant intrusion". Vehicle has 76K miles and because it is out of warranty period, requires a total engine replacement at the cost of over $8000. At this time Ford Customer Care is not willing to offer Customer Satisfaction programs to assist or recall (even though they did recall the 1.5 EcoBoost). Ford has lost a loyal customer as I no longer can justify brand loyalty (father and grandfather both worked for Ford) because of lack of confidence in their Engineering and Quality.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

Brakes failed and car rolled forward while stopped at a traffic light because of right rear brake line failure. This is the THIRD brake line failure on this vehicle. The first two were left and right front hoses, which ended up being subject of a recall, but only after I had mine fail and repaired. To this date, Ford has refused to reimburse me for those repairs.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On, or around, August 10th, I was driving my 2016 Ford Edge on the freeway, when my car started to stutter. I was not sure if the car would stall in rush hour traffic. The check engine light came on. After that, the car was difficult to start and ran roughly for several minutes. I also noticed that the car had started to use a lot of anti-freeze/coolant. I had the car diagnosed by an independent mechanic and found that the coolant was leaking into an engine cylinder. After researching the matter, it appears that this is a fairly common occurrence with the Ford Edge. There have been recalls for this problem, but my vin number is not one listed on the recall, although it is in the same year and the same problem. I am seeking help in getting this manufacturing failure resolved. I am not currently driving the vehicle, at the problem was getting worse. The vehicle is available for inspection.
