Ford Motor Company
NHTSA Campaign: 22V413000 SAFETY RECALL
2.9M Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Jun 10, 2022
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

Potential Risk:
A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Ford Edge and 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles. The front brake hoses may rupture prematurely.

Potential Risk:
A ruptured front brake hose will cause a brake fluid leak, lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front brake hoses with the new hoses that have a revised braid material, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim letter notifying owners of the safety risk was mailed September 21, 2020. A second letter will be sent once parts are available, which is expected to begin April 15, 2021. LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST

Potential Consequences:

We had stopped to get a soda and when we came back out and started the vehicle the steering wheel turned 90 degrees so the straight position was now 12 and 6 vs 3 and 9, I tried to shut the vehicle off and restart it and no change in steering wheel position. There was also an adaptive steering error on the dash. Another issue with this was that you could no longer see the speedometer as the steering spoke was covering it, we drove to the closest Ford dealer from where we were and we were told they didn’t have time to look at it on that day. I confirmed with the cashier that they were sending us away with a vehicle with a steering issue and the cashier once again just said they could not look at it on that day which I was not asking them to do I just wanted to leave it and go off in a loaner that I was able to get under the extended warranty. We went to the second ford dealer that was closer to our home and they took the vehicle in and 2 different service writers stated they had never seen anything like this before. they had the vehicle for a total of 3 weeks to diagnosis and replace the steering wheel and try to get the wheel back into alignment which took 2 trips. The second visit we met with the master tech at Ford country who went for a drive with us and could see that the Ford emblem in the center of the wheel was not straight and it took them 2 or 3 attempts to get it straight and the master tech with 35 years of experience stated they had only seen this 1 other time in all their years of working on vehicles. I just do not have confidence in the vehicle any longer and just keep thinking about what if this happened while we were driving and not just in a parking lot. I no longer feel safe in the vehicle

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Ford’s 2.0L EcoBoost engine failed on our on a 2018 Edge. The vehicle and engine are available for inspection. The engine suffered a catastrophic failure and must be replaced per Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 19-2346. Ford issued TSB 19-2346 on coolant loss/need for engine replacement in 2019. They had a class action lawsuit in 2012 on EcoBoost engines allowing coolant in cylinders. Ford had a chronic problem with these engines for years but kept selling them. There is a recall for some 2015-2018 Edges and 2017-2019 Fusion/MKZ/Escape/MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engines. I’m not sure why my 2018 Edge is not part of the recall, since the engine has failed per TSB 19-2346. The problem was diagnosed by a certified mechanic, diagnosis attached. I filed a case (#[XXX]) with Ford Customer Service, who denied any responsibility because my extended powertrain warranty (which I believe lasted until 100,000 miles) expired 3 months before the engine failure was diagnosed. I also wrote a letter (attached) to Ford Consumer Affairs, which remains unanswered. A check engine light appeared just days after Ford performed a routine 60,000 mile service. Ford reported no problems and did not indicate that our vehicle was at risk under of TSB 19-2346, even though this TSB and problems with the 2018 Ford Edge have been known about by Ford since at least 2019 when the TSB was issued. In addition to the check engine light, we started losing/and replacing small amounts of coolant, which we attributed to a hose leak. A few months later, a certified mechanic then diagnosed the problem as TSB 19-2346. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

According to the dealer this is TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 2.0L EcoBoost - Coolant In Cylinders, White Exhaust Smoke And/Or Illuminated MIL 22-2229 This affects the following vehicles 2015-2018 Ford Edge 2017-2019 Ford Escape Built on or before 16-May-2019 2017-2019 Ford Fusion Built on or before 8-Apr-2019 2017-2019 Lincoln MKC Built on or before 18-Apr-2019 2017-2019 Lincoln MKZ Built on or before 8-Apr-2019 This repair is estimated at $8,800. This after a $5,000 dollar repair on the Transmission and five weeks of being out of service. When one purchases a vehicle it should not lose two transmissions and an engine in less than 100,000 miles of service

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

2.0 ecoboost engine has a known flaw that causes the engine block to crack & introduce coolant into the cylinders. This is known to typically occur between 60 & 70,000 miles. It at the very least causes a misfire; at the most extreme it allows coolant into the oil & can cause engine lockup. Ford knows this is an issue & redesigned the engine in 2020. Our car developed this issue at 65k miles & Ford left us with a $9500 bill 1 month after warranty expired for a new engine

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

I am filing a formal complaint regarding a potential failed or insufficient recall repair related to NHTSA Recall 22V413 / Ford Recall 22S43 on my 2018 Ford Edge (VIN: [XXX] ). Ford replaced the shift cable bushing in Sept 2022. Within months, I experienced symptoms consistent with the original defect, including gear engagement issues, especially on inclines. One day, after shifting into reverse in a parking lot, the car rolled forward. I had to slam the brakes to avoid hitting another vehicle and feather the gas to reverse. These issues continued. Despite multiple service visits and reporting concerns, the dealership failed to document the problem. In Sept and Nov 2024, I again contacted the dealer. On Dec 18, 2024, they finally provided a loaner and inspected the vehicle. A full teardown revealed internal damage: metal debris in the solenoid body, worn sun gears, and failed clutch components—consistent with long-term gear misalignment. Ford has offered partial financial help but refuses to cover the full cost, leaving me with over $1,300 out-of-pocket despite raising concerns during the warranty window. As of June 16, 2025, the vehicle is still disassembled and remains in the dealership’s service bay with no firm repair date. I have been without my personal vehicle for six months. I respectfully request NHTSA to: Investigate whether recall 22V413 repairs are failing prematurely or inadequately prevent long-term damage. Assess whether further manufacturer responsibility is warranted for failures linked to this recall. Encourage Ford to fully cover repair costs under an extended remedy. Consider requiring a recall performance audit or extended warranty for affected vehicles. Thank you for reviewing this safety matter. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My engine light came on about a year ago, then went off rather quickly. This happened again about 6 months ago. At this time I connected a reader and learned that it was due to a cylinder 2 misfire. All coil packs and spark plugs were replaced thinking that would solve the problem. After it did not, I begin to search online and learned about the infamous coolant intrusion issue with my model vehicle . After reading multiple message boards regarding the issue, which appears to be directly tied to the motor design and which is very common, I confirmed that my vehicle is showing the same signs of others who have reported the issue. The last straw was when the car lost power and shut off of me in the middle of a crowded gas station parking lot where I had to sit and wait for a tow truck all while impeding traffic. At this point I am outside of my extended warranty and the only solution is a new motor at the cost of $8k. It is baffling that Ford is not being held responsible for this issue when it is so common and directly tied to the design of their motor. I am currently not able to drive a car that I am still paying a monthly payment for due to the manufacturer’s design flaw. A recall for this is well overdue and I ask you to do something about this expeditiously. Thanks.
