Potential Risk:
Door trim that detaches while driving can create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Explorer vehicles. The A-pillar trim retention clips may not be properly engaged, allowing the trim to detach.

Potential Risk:
A detached trim piece can fall off the vehicle, becoming a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect and replace the A-pillar trim as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 2, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S02.

Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2017 Explorer vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. Exposure to road salt can cause the cross-axis ball joint to corrode and seize, resulting in a fracture of the outboard section of the rear suspension toe link.

Potential Risk:
A rear toe-link fracture can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect and replace as necessary, the cross-axis ball joint (CABJ) knuckle, and replace the rear suspension toe links, free of charge. This recall is an expansion of previous NHTSA recall numbers 16V-245, 19V-435, and 20V-675. Certain vehicles previously repaired will need to return for the new remedy. An interim notification letter notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on September 10, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 16, 2022. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Explorer vehicles. The retention pins could loosen and allow the roof rail covers to detach from the vehicle.

Potential Risk:
A detached roof rail cover can create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will install push-pins and replace any damaged rail clips and roof rail covers, as necessary, free of charge. The interim owner notification letter was mailed on June 22, 2021. Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Explorer, 2014-2015 Taurus and 2014 Edge vehicles equipped with 2.0L or 2.3L engines and front wheel drive. The support bracket for the front drive axle halfshaft may fail.

Potential Risk:
The failed bracket could result in a loss of park function which can cause unintended vehicle movement, and loss of motive power while driving which increases the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the link shaft bracket, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Owners received an interim notification detailing safety risk December 8, 2020. A second letter will be mailed when parts become available in January 2021. The recall began February 2, 2021. Potential Risk:
A fractured rear toe link will cause a sudden change in vehicle handling and increase the risk of a crash.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016 F-150 and Explorer vehicles. Loose power seat adjuster pivot bolts may cause the front seat cushions to detach and not properly restrain the seat occupant in the event of a crash.

Potential Risk:
In the event of a crash, a seat occupant that is not properly restrained has an increased risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tightness of the power seat track upper pivot link bolt, either applying threadlocker or replacing the lift link and hardware, free of charge. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain Wheel Hub Bearing assemblies, part number HB5Z-1104-C, incorrectly listed as being for installation on the rear axles of 2011-2017 Ford Explorer 4X2 vehicles. These bearings assemblies were manufactured without a self retention feature, possibly resulting in the separation of the wheel or wheel end.

Potential Risk:
A loss of the wheel or wheel end can increase the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Ford will notify the distributors of the hubs specifying that they are to only be used on drive axles. It is believed that none of the hubs were purchased from Ford dealers for the incorrect application. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

The seat back frame may have insufficient welds which may not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 202, "Head Restraints" and 207, "Seating Systems."

Potential Risk:
The seat back may not adequately restrain the occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The affected vehicles are equipped with 2.3L GTDI engines and engine block heaters. These engine block heaters have elements that may overheat while plugged in.

Potential Risk:
Overheating of the engine block increase the risk of a fire.

During vehicle production, the fuel tank attachment bolts may not have been properly tightened. As a result, the fuel tank straps may fracture and the fuel tank could separate from the vehicle.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2015 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, and Lincoln MKS vehicles manufactured May 4, 2015, to May 23, 2015, Lincoln MKT vehicles manufactured May 4, 2015, to May 21, 2015, and 2015-2016 Ford Explorer vehicles manufactured May 4, 2015, to May 23, 2015. The affected vehicles have a parking brake that may not fully engage when applied. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Potential Risk:
If the parking brake does not fully engage and the transmission is left in a gear other than 'Park' while on a slope, the vehicle may roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

THE STEERING FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO AND I BROUGHT TO DEALER. THEY SAID IT WAS NOT THE STEERING BUT THE BATTERY PUTTING OUT THE WRONG VOLTAGE AND CAUSED THE SENSOR TO COME ON. TODAY I ACTUALLY LOST STEERING ON THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 30 MILES ON A LOCAL STREET. THE STREET CURVED AND I COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL. THE STEERING FAULT LIGHT CAME ON AND CAR SAID THAT THE TERRAIN ASSIST AND HILL ASSIST WAS DISABLED (WAS NOT USING). I WAS ABLE TO PUT MY HAZARDS ON, AND STRUGGLE WITH THE STEERING TO PULL OVER. I ONLY HAVE 42000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE AND HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR, INCLUDING REPLACING THE APIM. THE STEERING FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO AND I BROUGHT TO DEALER. THEY SAID IT WAS NOT THE STEERING BUT THE BATTERY PUTTING OUT THE WRONG VOLTAGE AND CAUSED THE SENSOR TO COME ON. TODAY I ACTUALLY LOST STEERING ON THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 30 MILES ON A LOCAL STREET. THE STREET CURVED AND I COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL. THE STEERING FAULT LIGHT CAME ON AND CAR SAID THAT THE TERRAIN ASSIST AND HILL ASSIST WAS DISABLED (WAS NOT USING). I WAS ABLE TO PUT MY HAZARDS ON, AND STRUGGLE WITH THE STEERING TO PULL OVER. I ONLY HAVE 42000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE AND HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR, INCLUDING REPLACING THE APIM. I BROUGHT MY 2016 FORD EXPLORER SPORT INTO LHM DRAPER ON APRIL 29TH WITH SOME SERVICE CONCERNS. THE MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEM WAS A CLUNKING/KNOCKING/BUCKLING NOISE IN THE FRONT END WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. AFTER LEAVING THE CAR FOR 12 DAYS I DISCOVERED THEY DID NOT FIX ANYTHING. FOR THE NEXT 9 DAYS AS I DROVE THE CAR I NOTICED THAT THE CLUNKING NOISE WAS STILL VERY MUCH PRESENT AND HAPPENING EVERY SINGLE DAY. THERE WASN'T A SINGLE DAY THAT I DIDN'T HEAR THIS NOISE. I TOOK THE CAR BACK IN ON MAY 24TH AGAIN FOR A CLUNKING/KNOCKING NOISE IN FRONT END WHEN THE WHEEL IS TURNED. ALSO A WHINING/WINDING NOISE FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. I PICKED THE CAR UP ON JUNE 4TH ONLY TO DISCOVER IT STILL WASN'T FIXED. I HAVE SENT SEVERAL MESSAGES TO THE DEALER WITH NO RESPONSE. THE CAR MAKES THIS NOISE DAILY. PROBLEM FIRST APPEARED ON JUNE 3, 2016 WITH ABOUT 10,000 MILES. I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 95 PAST PHILADELPHIA AIRPORT ABOUT 9:30 AM AT ABOUT 60 MPH. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN FROM A COLD START FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. IT WAS RAINING MODERATELY. THE BACKUP CAMERA SUDDENLY APPEARED ON THE SCREEN IN THE CENTER CONSOLE AND THE TRANSMISSION SHUDDERED SLIGHTLY. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE DASHBOARD DRIVE INDICATOR, WHICH NORMALLY IS LIT RED WHEN IN DRIVE, WAS WHITE, AS WERE ALL THE OTHER INDICATORS (R, N, ETC). I JIGGLED THE SHIFTER WITHOUT PRESSING THE SHIFTER BUTTON BUT THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE TRANSMISSION APPEARED TO BE STILL IN DRIVE SINCE THE CAR STILL HAD POWER AND WAS NOT SLOWING DOWN. IT LASTED FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS AND THEN THE DISPLAY RETURNED TO NORMAL AND THE D INDICATOR RETURNED TO ITS NORMAL RED MODE. ABOUT 30 SECONDS LATER THE PROBLEM RETURNED AND STAYED FOR 10 TO 15 SECONDS AND THEN AGAIN REVERTED BACK TO NORMAL. THIS BEHAVIOR REPEATED ONE OR TWO MORE TIMES IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MINUTES. I DID TALK TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AT MY FORD DEALER (SHERIDAN FORD, RT 2 KIRKWOOD HIGHWAY, WILMINGTON DE) ON JULY 21, 2016 WHEN I WAS GETTING AN OIL CHANGE AND I DESCRIBED THE FIRST INCIDENT. HE DID NOT SEEM VERY CONCERNED. HE SAID THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THAT HAPPENING BUT DID NOT HAVE ME WRITE ANYTHING DOWN. I TOLD HIM THAT IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN, I WOULD CONTACT FORD AND THE DEALER. THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED 12 MORE TIMES. I HAVE TOLD THE DEALER ABOUT IT EVERY TIME. I HAVE FURTHER TEXT DOCUMENTATION.

PROBLEM FIRST APPEARED ON JUNE 3, 2016 WITH ABOUT 10,000 MILES. I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 95 PAST PHILADELPHIA AIRPORT ABOUT 9:30 AM AT ABOUT 60 MPH. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN FROM A COLD START FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. IT WAS RAINING MODERATELY. THE BACKUP CAMERA SUDDENLY APPEARED ON THE SCREEN IN THE CENTER CONSOLE AND THE TRANSMISSION SHUDDERED SLIGHTLY. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE DASHBOARD DRIVE INDICATOR, WHICH NORMALLY IS LIT RED WHEN IN DRIVE, WAS WHITE, AS WERE ALL THE OTHER INDICATORS (R, N, ETC). I JIGGLED THE SHIFTER WITHOUT PRESSING THE SHIFTER BUTTON BUT THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE TRANSMISSION APPEARED TO BE STILL IN DRIVE SINCE THE CAR STILL HAD POWER AND WAS NOT SLOWING DOWN. IT LASTED FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS AND THEN THE DISPLAY RETURNED TO NORMAL AND THE D INDICATOR RETURNED TO ITS NORMAL RED MODE. ABOUT 30 SECONDS LATER THE PROBLEM RETURNED AND STAYED FOR 10 TO 15 SECONDS AND THEN AGAIN REVERTED BACK TO NORMAL. THIS BEHAVIOR REPEATED ONE OR TWO MORE TIMES IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MINUTES. AFTER THIS SERIES OF EVENTS THE CAR SEEMED TO BE NORMAL FOR THE REST OF MY 1.5 HOUR TRIP AND HAS BEEN FINE UNTIL AUG 13, 2016 WHEN THE SAME BEHAVIOR HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS COULD BE A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM IF IT GETS WORSE IF FOR NOTHING ELSE THAN IT IS CERTAINLY A DISTRACTION AND MAY RESULT IN TRANSMISSION DAMAGE AND LOSS OF CONTROL. VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING POPPING NOISES WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT ALSO HAPPENS WHILE BRAKING THE POPPING IS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO FEEL IN THE STEERING WHEEL AS WELL AS IN THE FLOOR BOARDS ON BOTH FRONT PASSENGER AND DRIVER. THE STEERING WHEEL HAS EXHIBITED EXTREME VIBRATION ENOUGH TO MAKE THE OUTSIDE DRIVER REVIEW MIRROR SHAKE. THE STEERING WHEEL HAS ALSO BEEN STUCK IN THE LEFT TURNING POSITION TWICE WHILE TRYING TO STRAIGHTEN WHEELS BACK OUT.

Corrective Action:
