Exposure to road salt can cause the cross-axis ball joint to corrode and seize, resulting in a fracture of the outboard section of the rear suspension toe link.

THE VEHICLE DECELERATED FROM 78 TO ABOUT 40 AS IF I HAD SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. AFTER STOPPING AND TALKING WITH MY DEALER HE RECOMMENDED TO CONTINUE AS NO WARNING LIGHTS OR INDICATORS APPEARED ON THE CAR. I CONTINUED ON THE ROAD AT A MUCH REDUCED SPEED. I RECEIVED A "TERRAIN MANAGEMENT FAULT" ALERT WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY, AND IMMEDIATELY HAD A LOSS OF POWER AND VERY SLOW ACCELERATION AFTER STOPPING. UPON REACHING MY HOME THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT DRIVE UP A SMALL INCLINE IN MY DRIVEWAY. THE "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" CAME ON AND THERE IS NOW A LOUD METALLIC CLANG WHEN SHIFTING INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 13, 655 MILES ON IT. I CALLED FORD ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THEY WILL HAVE A TOW TRUCK TAKE IT TO A FORD DEALER IN THE MORNING FOR TESTING..
