Defect Description:

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Two problems 1. Auto Start/Stop feature 2. Pre-Collision Assist (1) Auto Start/Stop feature- unpredictable.. 1. My engine turns off at busy intersection for red light with a vehicle coming in fast from behind, I hit gas to move forward . My truck revs hard from starting with foot on gas and darts forward. Almost went into cross traffic. 2. There is a current recall on Maverick batteries. Numerous complaints on the Facebook Ford Maverick of vehicle shutting off for auto-stop, but not starting in traffic conditions due to the battery. Fact - any electrical or computer problem and your vehicle is now stranded in an intersection. The Maverick has several electrical recalls. 3. I have timed my Vehicle Restart response on camera. It takes approx 1 more second for my vehicle engine to re-start and advance forward. For many accidents 1 second is the difference of life and death. 4. When I stop to put the vehicle in reverse, it will auto-stop while I am shifting. My vehicle is now sitting in the road, until I hit reverse and no brake, then "jumps" backwards in reverse. 5. The feature cannot be turned off permanently- it must be turned off manually for every trip. Summary - I have sent these concerns to Ford. They will not provide a way to turn off this feature. Only option is to pay a mechanic to disable it with an aftermarket product, which could of course, damage something else. (2) Front Collision Warning System - Has gone off three times for no valid reason. One time simply passing an oncoming vehicle 2 times passing police vehicles on the side of the road with flashing lights. I have lowered it's alert level to low and seems to help. But clearly, Emergency lights setting off a system that takes some control of stirring and braking is a concern.

ENGINE

SEATS

Potential Consequences:

My wife and I were involved in an accident where we were stopped and a vehicle rear-ended us at approximately 45mph, centered on the rear of the truck. My wife was in the passenger seat and I was driving. My seat collapsed backwards completely, and my wife's seat collapsed within about 2 inches of the rear seat. When mine collapsed, the headrest came out most of the way, and I slid backwards, hitting the top, back of my head on the rear seat just below the head rest, breaking the skin and leaving a mark of blood visible in the photos.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

This vehicle will reduce or cut throttle application/response relative to how many degrees the steering wheel is turning. When trying to pull out in traffic if you have the wheel turned beyond a set angle the throttle doesn't respond as expected and acceleration is greatly reduced. It will also cut the throttle if you pull out and then turn only to fully accelerate as the wheel is straightened out again. Two very dangerous examples I've experienced are 1: pulling onto a "freeway" that has a few side roads with perpendicular access. With the wheel turned the truck is very slow to accelerate when first pulling onto the expressway but suddenly will as the wheel is straightened. 2: When going across 2 lanes of traffic and making a turn to join traffic the truck will accelerate as expected across the first lanes, loose power as you turn, and then accelerate fully again as the wheel is straightened. While an argument could be made to just sit and wait until there is more time to join traffic, there are moments when being able to accelerate hard are necessary. This vehicle will either not accelerate or will reduce acceleration based on angles of steering. I believe this is a dangerous situation that most experienced drivers are not going to be expecting when they have to join fast moving traffic. Following web forums this is an issue other owners have experienced.

I have not contacted Ford regarding a warranty replacement because they would just replace it with the same defective part. I have further investigated this issue and found several documented cases with complete failure of the tank at a little as 20 K miles.

I have further investigated this issue and found several documented cases with complete failure of the tank at a little as 20 K miles.

Additional Notes:

The plastic cooling system overflow expansion tank sign is stress cracking in the inlet tubing at approximately 8K miles. It has gotten worse with my odometer at 12K now. I have not contacted Ford regarding a warranty replacement because they would just replace it with the same defective part. I have further investigated this issue and found several documented cases with complete failure of the tank at a little as 20 K miles.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

I started the Car and it made loud boom boom sounds like as if I was at a loud concert for about 10 seconds. That stopped but then loud static or electrical sound continued even after car was turned off. Re started and the sound continued. The initial sound shook me and wife. Where wife refuses to get back in. Also the initial sound wife said she smelt smoke. I faintly smelled a burnt wire smell. The next day while driving the system made more of the static/ electrical noise and didn’t stop until I parked and shut off system for about 10 min. I will be taking truck into dealer ship tomorrow.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

2023 Ford Maverick 2.0L engine current mileage 5300 Noticed oil leak on top of engine valve cover. Ford Mechanic stated there are (3) current service related engine leak issues with Maverick. (1) Plastic valve cover cracked (2) Turbo Oil leak (3) Timing Cover Leak. Mechanic stated a die test will need to be performed. After review of online forums, this appears to be a more common issue and can cause engine fire, especially since High Pressure fuel pump is also located on top of the engine. With Ford spreading repairs across three known issues, A recall investigation should be opened. Repair Sevice schedule for 9/19/24. Can provide repair invoices if desired after service. From research the valve cover, most likely culprit based on oil leak location, is a 2 week repair.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

Shortly after startup the infotainment screen on my Maverick froze. After shifting into reverse it was unable to display the reverse camera image. I attempted several shifts between Drive, Park, and Reverse and it remained frozen. I attempted a short key cycle, powering the truck down, including opening the drivers door in an attempt to cycle power to the infotainment and upon restart it remained frozen. After arriving at my destination and leaving the power off for 10-15 minutes it returned to normal behavior on the next key cycle. I have video of the failure occurring, including attempted solutions noted above.
