Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Honda Civic and CR-V vehicles. The magnet that controls the torque sensor output signal for the electronic power steering system may not be properly secured, allowing the magnet to become dislodged. The unintended steering input reduces vehicle maneuverability and increases the risk of a crash.

NHTSA Campaign: 18V266000 SAFETY RECALL
69 Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Apr 26, 2018
Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback and Civic Type R vehicles. Driver and front passenger seatback pads sold as replacement service parts were made without slit openings for the seat-mounted side air bags. In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the seatback pad would interfere and adversely affect air bag performance. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection."

Potential Risk:
If the seat-mounted air bags cannot not deploy correctly in the event of a crash, there would be an increased risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front seatback pads, free of charge. The recall began June 15, 2018. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is E1D, U1B, and X1C.

Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe vehicles. The right halfshaft may have been improperly heat treated, reducing its strength.

Potential Risk:
The improper heat treatment can result in the halfshaft breaking, preventing the engine from moving the vehicle, and can allow a possible roll away situation if the parking brake is not engaged. This can increase the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the halfshaft's serial number, replacing it as necessary and aligning the front wheels, free of charge. The recall began December 8, 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is K0E.

Potential Consequences:

I have oil dilution in my 2015 Honda Civic EX-T VIN [XXX]. Dealer performed the fixes. The Next time I had the oil sample checked it was worse. The oil smells like a weedeater. I am at 13.72% fuel in the oil. Very Rich. I live in Alabama where it is hot. I only drive long distances to and from work on the interstate. I need help. Honda is doing nothing. They are not telling the dealer anything or sharing any specs as acceptable percentage fuel in the oil. It is a coverup. TSBs have been done and engine checked and injectors are good. Please advise. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

I believe the issue I'm about to explain is with the EPS Rack Assembly. I am deeply concerned for my safety and the safety of other riding in my vehicle as it is difficult sometimes to keep the vehicle on the road due to the steering sticking at random times. MANY other 2016+ Honda Civic owners are experiencing this problem as there are several forums currently viewed on the internet discussing this issue. When driving the vehicle, the steering wheel "sticks" in one spot when turning and sometimes takes a considerable force to break the steering wheel free. This issue seems to happen after the car/engine is warm (20-30 minutes into driving). This problem started out as minor and sporadic, but has become much worse in the past month or so. I will be making an appointment with my local Honda dealer for evaluation.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

The steering on this car is very dangerous. After driving for 30 or 40 minutes the wheel sticks and must be brought back to center manually or car will leave the road or change lanes. This is hard to diagnose for technician. They all say there’s no problem because it’s intermittent. There is no warning lights. The faster you go the problem gets worse , very bad on the interstate highway.

Corrective Action:

The steering on this car is very dangerous. After driving for 30 or 40 minutes the wheel sticks and must be brought back to center manually or car will leave the road or change lanes. This is hard to diagnose for technician. They all say there’s no problem because it’s intermittent. There is no warning lights. The faster you go the problem gets worse , very bad on the interstate highway.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

I am reaching out regarding an issue in my 2017 Honda Civic EX-T. Over the past few months, I have noticed that the steering wheel seems to "stick" or feel "notchy" when making small adjustments from center (12 o clock) position. This is most noticeable when driving on a long, straight stretch of freeway requiring minor adjustments to keep the car centered. The steering will stick when attempting to making small corrections, requiring extra force to overcome resistance. After providing more force, the steering will suddenly give way, typically causing overcorrection in the opposite direction. As a result, I have to weave back and forth in my lane to keep the car straight. This issue is most pronounced when the ambient temperature is hot, and the car has been driven for at least 20-30 minutes. Interestingly, the issue will disappear if the weather is cooler or if the car is driven for short distances in the city. I have brought the car to a shop before, but they were unable to reproduce the issue. It is hard to reproduce because the car needs to be driven for 20-30 minutes, preferably on the highway, before the steering stiffness occurs. It appears that this is a well-known issue at this point, and I have seen multiple reports online about the issue. From what I understand, the only fix at this point is to replace the EPS steering rack (part 53650-TBC-A02). However, it seems that some people have had the issue reoccur even after replacing the rack. I believe this issue is a major safety concern. The steering becomes unpredictable when driving in a straight line. I am forced to constantly overcorrect and weave back and forth when driving on the highway at 70+ mph, thus dramatically increasing the risk of an accident. There needs to be some sort of safety recall for this issue, as it seems to be a manufacturer issue with the EPS motor that has affected several vehicles.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My vehicle has oil dilution issue. The engine releases toxic gas from the engine compartment to interior of the car though the air duct. This gives me major headache and forces me to drive with my widow open as to not worsen my asthma issues. After checking the oil dipstick I can smell the gas aroma coming from the oil. This is a serious environmental issue and an even greater health concern of mine. I pray my health does not deteriorate to where I develop cancer from the toxins.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Driving at 60MPH, heard a loud bang followed by an increase in wind noise. After pulling over, saw that the sunroof had a large hole in it with most of the broken glass falling into the sunroof soft cover. The remaining glass had a spider-web like pattern all the way to the border. There was no evidence of any foreign object in the sunroof area or any impact/collision. The car was not being driven under trees or other overhangs. There was rain in the vicinity, but no hail. Temperature was 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit.
