Recall Date: Nov 28, 2018
Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2019 Honda Ridgeline and Pilot vehicles. The mounting holes for the clip that secures the right center pillar trim panel may be larger than intended. In the event of a crash necessitating right side curtain air bag deployment, the clip may not hold the center pillar trim panel in position and it may potentially interfere with the curtain air bag deployment. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection," and 226, "Ejection Mitigation."

Potential Risk:
In the event of a crash, if the curtain air bag does not deploy as intended, it can increase the risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a bracket on the right center pillar that will securely hold the center pillar trim clip, free of charge. The recall began January 22, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is D3D.

Potential Risk:
In the event of a crash, if the air bags or seatbelt pretensioners do not function as intended, there would be an increased risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

While opening the swinging tailgate, I noticed a rubbing sound. I closed the tailgate and opened it the standard method and noticed that the wire harness for the backup camera was out of the plastic holder/elbow and the outer harness shield had separated with the actual wires visible. I searched online and discovered this site: https://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/threads/2017-2020-broken-tailgate-harness-causes-backup-camera-failure.217776/page-10. Apparently this is a known issue and if I had not discovered it, the wires most likely would have been severed rendering the backup camera inoperative. I brought the truck to the dealership and they confirmed the problem and mentioned that they have replaced multiple wire harnesses on other Ridgelines with the same issue. The dealership was unsure why there isn’t a recall or at least a TSB. I noted that the replacement part number is the same as the original and am concerned that this issue will again arise in the future. The truck had just under 28,000 miles when this issue was discovered.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Backup camera has stopped working. I can see cables that have been damaged because of a poorly designed cable harness routing through the Ridgelines 2 way opening tail gate. There are hundreds of posts regarding this defect (https://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/threads/2017-2020-broken-tailgate-harness-causes-backup-camera-failure.217776/page-20) The backup camera is completely useless now and with the Ridgeline's higher truck bed (due to the "trunk" funtion), it is very difficult to see when backing up and makes the vehicle much more likely to be involved in a backing up accident.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

About 5-8% of the time when I engage the cruise control, it will advance an additional 3-4 mph all by it self. This almost caused an accident on one occasion. I had it into the dealers for repair and they said it was normal. I never had a car that did this before.

STRUCTURE:BODY:HOOD

Potential Consequences:

The hood shakes, flutters, bounces, in the wind. It is very unnerving thinking hood will detach and fly up and hit windshield while driving. Took the ridgeline to Honda of Ames Iowa. The glue holding the subframe to hood failed and Honda of Ames said it was out of warranty with 61,094 miles. My opinion was glue failed was not the problem but a design flaw in the hood. Honda of Ames Iowa referred me to a 3rd party for repair. I performed my own repair by glueing hood with gorerilla glue and hood still shakes, flutters, bounces.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Honda certified used vehicle purchased in mid August ~27K miles. Shortly after normal vehicle operation and returning to our enclosed garage, the vehicle emits a strong odor of gasoline, not the result of improper or careless fueling. Two visits to dealership say nothing is wrong. No other source results in odor if this Honda vehicle is not in the garage, including a 2017 Murano. The odor is occasionally detectible in the cabin but that is not the primary complaint. The emissions of gasoline vapor (odor) appears about 15/20 minutes after shutdown and even detectible outside close to the vehicle between the left rear passenger door and rear wheel.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Upon startup, a raw fuel odor will enter the cabin. It usually doesn’t happen the first time it starts during the day but can be noticed upon repeated start up attempts. We often notice it when idling for a time as well. Sometimes a strong fuel odor is noticed when outside of the truck, even after parking it in the garage. I have taken it to two Honda dealers and they have not been able to replicate the issue. To keep the odor out of the cabin, we keep the fan on recirculate. We have had this problem since we bought the truck new in January 2020, as I noticed a strong odor in the garage after driving it home. I think we noticed it in February or March that year coming into the cabin through the heater. It also smells when it blows cold air, but it doesn’t happen all the time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

The backup camera has failed. The issue is wear and tear of an exposed portion of the wiring harness at the left tailgate hinge. The plastic housing containing the wires is exposed, breaks open, and exposing the wires supplying power to the camera and possibly other items. These wires continue to flex and eventually break. This is important because backup cameras are now part of he vehicles safety system. Failure causes the vehicle to become more unsafe. I believe that there should be a recall to inspect the wiring harness and replace if deemed defective.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

Vehicle had had a rodent due to the wires long story short through the next day I got a light and things were not driving right and I got it to the dealer thank God. Cost me roughly 250 to 300 to have it repaired on my own dime because they said a rodent chewed The wire. I see and hear from other Honda owners that is a major problem with soy based wires. I do not consider an animal a natural act. It's a pest therefore you child-proof that you do not leave wires on the bottom open to areas that a animal can get to The chew. I feel Honda should be looked at since they know of this problem they saw hot and deterrent capacity type tape to deter rodents. How do I not know one of those components is not going to be something that is life limb or eyesight next time and that one next little wire that that road and choose to is going to cause an accident? Please address thank you.
