Recall Date: Apr 28, 2021
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Elantra, 2019-2021 Kona and Veloster vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which could result in engine damage.

Potential Risk:
A damaged engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, oil may leak onto hot exhaust components, increasing the risk of a fire.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine, free of charge. In addition, Hyundai will deploy Piston Ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software. Owner notification letters were mailed August 24, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My Hyndai Elantra car has been in the shop for 1 month already and they told me that the engine has a hole in the block. My car stopped working while driving with my 3 year old in a highway as i was exiting a ramp. I was so scared because I wasn't able to move all the way to the side and cars were going 70-75 mph. I just felt how the car moved with every car that passed by. I just saw through the mirror that 4 cars were about to hit me from behind. I did call police, waited 1 hour but they never arrived. My husband had to push the car with his car to move us to safety. In Addition, there was a Hyndai Elantra recall for engines but I believe my car is not included and I think my car has a 2L Engine. I found the information below from a search engine. "Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling 158,493 2019-2021 Elantra cars, equipped with the 2.0L Nu MPI engine"

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

my 17 year old son was driving the car to practice. It began to KNOCK and SMOKE. It STALLED in the middle of the road. We had the car towed home. a mechanic looked at it the next day and said that the engine was Dead. A rod was thrown. The oil drum had other things leaked into it like antifreeze. i called hyundai, because it is under warranty. (only 34,000 miles on it). AT that time they informed me of the RECALL. it is an engine recall where the EXACT thing happens. It sat at the dealership for a week and a half before they even would look at it. THEN they refuse to fix the recall. they submitted a "prior auth" for warranty repair. We had to submit oil change info (which we did). AFTER 5 WEEKS they told us VIA TEXT MESSAGE that hyundai denied to cover warranty due to neglect. THEY ARE BLAMING US WHEN THERE IS AN ENGINE RECALL ON THIS CAR!?!?! They won't even SPEAK about the recall, they are rude and told us to go to the BBB and get an attorney. I have attached our oil change receipts that we sent them.PLEASE HELP!

February 2021 - I took my vehicle to Wilson Hyundai in Flowood, MS - was told there was a recall having to do with my headlights but no components were available to make the repair. I have called numerous times to ask about replacement parts and get the run around. My lights are not bright and switching to bright is not even worth the effort. I can barely see 30ft ahead at best after the sun goes down. When will parts be available or some type of resolution because this is dangerous. There were no warning lamps on until maybe 1 month ago (October 2021), it tells me that I need to have my daytime running lamps serviced. I can't wait til I can trade this vehicle off. November 2, 2021 - I hit a dog because I did not see it.

The contact had to keep refueling to a full tank to start the vehicle. The failure only occurred when the fuel level was at a quarter tank. Hyundai of Palatine (221 E Lake Cook Rd, Palatine, IL 60074) was also made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the recall was already repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.

Potential Consequences:

It began in early 2020 my brakes shake when braking and sometimes don’t work at all. After having to change my brakes multiple times and get them flushed my mechanic suggested I contact Hyundai because this was not the norm. It happens spontaneously and now the car is dying when I brake . And won’t start without a jump. This happened now 2x once in my driveway and once in traffic.and I was almost hit by multiple cars since I had become disabled and couldn’t get out of traffic before my car came to a complete stop. This is unacceptable. It is a well maintained new car. The headlights are very low and don’t work well in dark areas. But the most concerning is the brakes and the car dying while driving. I need help asap.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

There is a knocking noise in my engine. The car stalls in the middle of driving with NO warning. The car just dies. It is also using a lot of oil. I keep the oil changed and I check it often. The first two times I had it checked bc I heard a knocking noise, they said it’s low and then 2 weeks later it was already super low again!!!! Driving in town a few miles a day is no reason for oil to be gone. There is no oil in my driveway under the car or where I park it at work. I only drive 5 miles a day to and from work and running errands on the weekends. When the car just stopped in the middle of the road, 3 times, on my 5 mile drive to work, I almost got rear ended and almost hit the car in front of me. I know there is a recall on 2019 Hyundai’s but the Hyundai store in Norman said my VIN says my car should be fine. The problem is- the car is doing EXACTLY WHAT THE RECALL says will happen. I need someone from Hyundai to help before someone gets really hurt from this car. I am in the car business and so is my family. However we aren’t in contact with Hyundai business and that sucks because maybe I could get someone to actually help with this instead of being treated horribly by all the people I’ve dealt with this week at Hyundai dealerships. This car is dangerous and I will be getting rid of it and buying any car that’s not a Hyundai if I can’t get this one fixed with the recalled parts.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Potential Consequences:

Headlights will not go to high beam at times, other times the right side will not return back to low beam. I have had this problem many times and Hyundi replaced both headlights, but now they say they won't fix them because of the miles. This headlight design was new for the 2019 model year, I had a 2018, and a 2017 and had no problems with them. The 2019 has a projection type bulb, and uses a mechanical flap to change from high to low beam. This flap sticks, or fails to operate resulting in very intermittent operation. This is a very poor design and many times oncoming cars get blinded by one of the high beams that doesn't return to low beam. The problem is very intermittent so it doesn't always happen when your in the shop. I have talked to other Hyundi owners having the same problem, and I think this is a safety problem that needs a recall. Replacing these lights will cost about $1,000 and many people out of warranty will not replace them.
