Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Sonata, 2016-2017 Sonata Hybrid, and Sonata Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) software logic may not properly interpret the signals received from the multifunction switch, which could cause the turn signal to activate in the opposite direction of what the driver intended.

Potential Risk:
A turn signal that activates in the opposite direction of what was intended by the driver increases the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will update the SJB software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 19, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 210.

Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Sonata, 2016-2018 Sonata Hybrid, 2018-2020 Accent, and 2016-2017 Azera vehicles. The trunk latch may become damaged, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 401, "Internal Trunk Release."

Potential Risk:
A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the trunk latch base, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 208.

Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Veloster, 2012 Santa Fe, 2011-2013 Sonata Hybrid, and 2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which over time can result in engine damage.

Potential Risk:
A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2021. Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicles manufactured December 8, 2014, to August 18, 2015, and Hyundai Sonata vehicles manufactured May 28, 2014, to March 18, 2016, equipped with the panoramic sunroof option. Due to a bonding issue with the sunroof wind deflector, the sunroof panel on the affected vehicles may detach while driving.

Potential Risk:
If the sunroof detaches from the vehicle it could become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair the wind deflector anchor plate, free of charge. The recall began December 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 152.

Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Sonata vehicles manufactured May 29, 2014 to February 11, 2016, 2017 Elantra vehicles manufactured January 12, 2016 to February 22, 2016, and one 2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicle manufactured October 15, 2015. In these vehicles, the driver's frontal air bag may be missing a chemical enhancer required for the second stage air bag deployment, resulting in the second stage not deploying in certain crashes. The primary stage will deploy as intended.

Potential Risk:
An air bag that does not inflate increases the risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall began on May 5,2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 144.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated while driving 15 mph, the vehicle loss motive power and shuddered while the accelerator pedal was being depressed. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle however, the failure persisted. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer however, the vehicle was not yet diagnosed nor repaired. The contact was concerned that the failure was engine related. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 99,000.

Corrective Action:

SINCE LAST OIL CHANGE 6K MILES AGO THEIR WAS NO OIL IN THE ENGINE. THEY SAW THIS SEVERAL TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR WITH 2.0 ENGINE, THEY WANT NO RESPONSIBILITY AND SAID TAKE YOUR CAR TO THE DEALER & OPEN CASE THE ENGINE HAS A SERIOUS FLAW, IT BURNS THE OIL WITH THE GASOLINE. THEY SAID A RECALL? DOCUMENTS ATTACHED. I WENT TOTEXAN HYUNDAI, PUT MY CAR THROUGH A SERIES OF TESTS EVERY 1000 MILES. DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT 65 MPH, THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A TICKING NOISE. FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD THE TICKING BECAME KNOCKING. THIS PROMPTED THE COMMAND CENTER TO TELL ME TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF IMMEDIATELY. THE VEHICLE WOULD NO LONGER CRANK AND WAS GIVING A CAMSHAFT SENSOR CODE. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE 5 DAYS LATER. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER BEING TOLD I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE, AND THAT IT WASN'T A RECALL ISSUE, I CALLED NATIONAL. AFTER A WEEK OR SO IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT HYUNDAI WOULD REPLACE THE MOTOR AT THEIR EXPENSE. NEVER CONFIRMING IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE RECALL THOUGH I HAD ALL THE SYMPTOMS OTHER THAN CATCHING ON FIRE. IT HAS NOW BEEN 2 MONTHS AND MY MOTOR IS SUPPOSEDLY ON BACK ORDER, BUT COMING IN WEEKLY. HYUNDAI SEEMS TO REALLY BE DRAGGING THERE FEET THOUGH THEY LOST A LAWSUIT OVER MOTOR ISSUES BEFORE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V746000 (ENGINE) HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT CALLED BOB BAKER HYUNDAI (5285 CAR COUNTRY DR, CARLSBAD, CA 92008, (760) 929-4900) WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE PART WAS NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, A CLICKING SOUND WAS HEARD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC OR DEALER TO DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. IN JUNE OF 2020 I GOT AN EMERGENCY WARNING ON MY VEHICLE'S DASH THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE HYBRID SYSTEM AND SHOULD STOP MY CAR IMMEDIATELY AND TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE VEHICLE SLOWED TO 20 M.P.H. THEN CAME TO A STOP, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS KEPT FOR 10 DAYS, I WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE. HALF A BLOCK FROM THE DEALER IT HAPPENED AGAIN, I RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER THEY SAID IT WAS A SPARK PLUG WHICH WAS REPLACED. I EXPRESSED MY CONCERN WITH THE CAR COMING TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. ON MARCH 3, 2021, THE SAME THING HAPPENED, A WARNING ON MY DASH, THE VEHICLE SLOWED AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. AFTER BEING "FIXED" BY THE DEALER AGAIN, THIS PROCESS REPEATED ITSELF A COUPLE MORE TIMES AND THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER AFTER NEEDING TO BE TOWED FOR A FOURTH TIME. EACH OF THE TIMES THAT THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED, IT HAS NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THERE IS NO WARNING BEFORE THE CAR MALFUNCTIONS.
