Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

Potential Risk:
A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on November 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed January 15, 2022. 652K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Sep 4, 2020
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.

Potential Risk:
An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. Recall Date: Nov 21, 2016
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Tucson vehicles manufactured May 19, 2015, to November 14, 2016, and 2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured November 28, 2015, to November 14, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness that, due to a malfunction of the tow hitch module, may result, in the trailer brake lights being constantly illuminated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Potential Risk:
If the trailer brake lights stay illuminated while being used, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On [XXX] my 2017 Hyundai Tucson check engine light came on on [XXX] in Atlanta. Just moments afterward my car began to reduce its speed. It was not driving nearly like it should. My exit was approximately 4 miles from when the check engine light came on. At my exit car started vibrating, I did not think I was going to make it through the light. Even though my car was not driving right and the check engine light being on I did not want to stop and be stuck on the side of the road. I was headed to my daughters house about 2 and half miles off the interstate. With my emergency flashers on I made to her subdivision. As I proceeded up the hill it would not go, it started going in reverse. Needless to say I was starting to panic. My son in law was the first car to come, he told me to turn the engine off and restart. That didnt help. So he got in my car and put in Neutral. We were a few yards from their house. I had car towed to dealership on INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Tucson currently has 98,000 miles on the engine and is burning extreme amounts of oil. Oil consumption issues became known as early as 75,000. Per 1,000 miles of driving, the Hyundai dealership notes the car is losing over 2 quarts of oil. I have been having to return to the dealership every 1,000 miles to be monitored. I have already had to pay replace my catalytic converter, which I believe was a result of the excess rate of oil burn from the engine. I have also had to pay to replace the oil gaskets in the oil pan even though there was no noticeable sign that the engine was leaking oil. I am now being told I am going to need to have an engine head cleaning repair that will take several days. Once that is complete, I will have to undergo continued oil consumption testing to determine the results. They are requesting I produce my service records or Hyundai will not cover the repairs. Almost all of the service on this vehicle was done at the dealership and I was never notified of any issue with oil consumption. A separate mechanic, while performing a quote, did an oil change and noted the car was completely out of oil. This engine is well known for its oil consumption issues and Hyundai does not seem to want to take responsibility for their defective engine.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Engine blew up before oil change was required and car is under 100,000 miles Engine presumably failed on the way home from work, was making a sound. Parked the car, got in the next morning to take it to the repair shop. Check engine light came on during transit. They called and said there was a rod bearing failure and advised that I have it towed to Hyundai for possible warranty work. Car will be repaired in 4-6 weeks. Nalley Hyundai in Lithonia Georgia is not able to provide a loaner car as there are 11 people on the waiting list before me. I have 2 kids and a full-time job. I now have no car for 2 months.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

6 June 2024 - Sudden severe loss of engine power while driving, presenting potentially serious safety hazard in traffic situations. Check engine light illuminated during incident (not blinking). Driver was able to pull to side of road and shut off car, then after 2 attempts car re-cranked. Driver was able to crank and drive 5 miles home. Check engine code P1233 stored & retrieved by scanner, indicating fuel pump issue -- (potentially a low pressure fuel pump leak similar to Hyundai TSB 23-FL-004H?), which may present fire hazard from leaking fuel. Visual inspection of high pressure pump in engine bay - no noticed problems. Visual / olfactory inspection of area around gas tank - no noticed problems or smell of fuel, no indication of leaking. Briefly cranked engine, no noticeable leaks or sounds. No check engine light (though P1233 stored).

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

The car would hesitate to accelerate causing the engine to rev high and then take off. It had gotten progressively worse with no error codes detected. With a lack of code, nothing could be done. My daughter was not comfortable driving the car due to the fact it had gotten so bad so I was driving her to school. While going 50 mph the engine started to rev high then completely died with no error or warning. I was able to coast off safely, however an inexperienced driver may not have been able to do the same. A recall needs to be issued ASAP before there are more serious consequences.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Engine has been burning through oil fast, requiring me to add oil every couple of weeks. 2 difference service places have told me this and also told me to contact Hyundai to file a complaint, as many other 2017 Hyundai Tucsons have recalls out for the same reason. This could cause an engine to fail if oil burns all the way out without my knowledge - safety hazard for me and others on the road. Car also sputters and struggles to accelerate at times, which has been an issue since getting the car in 2020. Please consider recalling to fix said issues.

Lastly I've also read where there was a recall on these vehicles for the the baron rod and the engine malfunction as well as a new system being put into this these vehicles I was not aware of these recalls because it purchase of this vehicle was right when the recall window had closed and I ended up having a problem now they won't do anything about it can someone please do something about this vehicle.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Had had the vehicle approximately four months (purchased at Irwin Dealership in Laconia, NH) when the vehicle would not start. It was rendered non-functional. It was “repaired” in February 2023. When picked up in Feb after Irwin dealership in Laconia, NH had had it for almost 3 wks, they told me it had carbon buildup. It had only been driven about 4,000 miles since it had been purchased on [XXX], 2022. They changed the oil (oil changes are recommended every 5,000 miles). It died again on [XXX], 2023; again it had been driven less than 4,000 miles and was not yet due for an oil change. It has been there since. They (Irwin) wanted service records, I told them all I had from prior to purchase was the carfax, and that they had performed the only service because I hadn't driven it long enough to have even had a second oil change. When Irwin submitted documents to Hyundai, they indicated the issues with the car were due to neglect and poor maintenance. Hyundai refused to replace the engine citing that I had failed to provide service records. The car remains at the dealership, despite payments being made on a vehicle that can not be used. POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

My engine began consuming oil at a faster rate. My miles per gallon decreased. Then while driving, my engine lost power, and then the check engine light came on without warning. Pulled into the closet mechanic (less than 2 miles) and mechanic found that I had lost all compression in cylinder 3 of my engine and that there was a large carbon build up. My engine just failed. I bring my Tucson in every 5000 miles for service.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I religiously come into a auto repair shop for oil changes. Well before my next scheduled change, my engine started to make thumping noises. I filled up the engine with oil before taking it in to the auto body shop. The shop informed me that the engine needs to be replaced. They also informed me that this seems to be a recurring issue with Hyundai's and that a lot of owners are experiencing high oil needs for their engines. Neither my check oil light or check engine light notified me that there was low oil before the damage occured on my engine. I have filed a report with Hyundai as well and am still waiting to hear back from them.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The engine sustained a crack and oil was leaking out of a cylinder. Initially thought to have been an oil problem since the check oil light would come on. Vehicle was taken to a dealer where they determined it was a bad cylinder. They did not have the correct tools to get into the block so they kept the vehicle for over a month. They returned the vehicle back and shortly after the issue started to happen again. The engine was knocking really loud and cannot accelerate over 40 miles an hour. We took it back to the dealer where they determined that it was a faulty engine and had requested all of the oil change and maintenance records. This vehicle had been taken back to the dealership on multiple occasions for routine maintenance. Talking to the maintenance technicians they could not find any record of us taking the vehicle there mentioning that the dealership had changed hands. We had records from oil changes at one other location but the dealership deemed negligence for the engine failure. This is about a three-year-old case and car was ay 109,00 miles

Potential Consequences:

After owning my vehicle for 4 years, it has started burning oil. Burning about 2 quarts every 14 days. Was directed by dealership to perform oil consumption test every 1000 miles, which is all logged through the dealership and was sent on my way. The problem is now affecting my spark plugs and could packs. After all we're replaced/changed, when plugs are removed, they are covered in oil and are fried! Hyundai has not addressed the issue, but many consumers have this same problem.
