Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

Potential Risk:
A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on November 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed January 15, 2022. 652K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Sep 4, 2020
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.

Potential Risk:
An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. 6.2K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Nov 21, 2016
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Tucson vehicles manufactured May 19, 2015, to November 14, 2016, and 2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured November 28, 2015, to November 14, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness that, due to a malfunction of the tow hitch module, may result, in the trailer brake lights being constantly illuminated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Campaign 209. Hyundai is refusing to provide assistance under recall campaign 209 for our VIN. Our vehicle has premature rod bearing failure causing engine failure. Rod knock noise. My wife drives the 2017 Hyundai Tucson. This year in June 2023 our vehicle check engine light came on for knock sensor. Soon after the vehicle started having acceleration issues, then the oil pressure warning light would come on and off. The vehicle oil level was checked, and we learned the vehicle oil level was low. The vehicle was through burning oil. The vehicle had burned through a quart of oil with no explanation. Our VIN # for our vehicle indicates there is an active recall Campaign #209 for Rod bearing issues with our specific model and VIN. Our specific vehicle and VIN when entered into Hyundai’s website reflects active recall. We took the vehicle into Red Mccombs Hyundai Northwest to have our vehicle evaluated. Red Mccombs submitted a PA to Hyundai for engine replacement. They denied coverage stalling vehicle is no longer under warranty but made no mention of active recall. We got Hyundai Consumer Affairs involved and had same result with denial stalling vehicle is no longer under warranty. We then brought up recall #209 explaining we are having all the same issues they list on their website for this active recall. Dealer refused to look at rod bearings stalling we would have to pay for them to inspect rod bearings. Hyundai consumer affairs had us take it to another Hyundai service dept. for a second opinion. As Hyundai consumer affairs requested, we drove vehicle to principle Hyundai of boerne. While driving my vehicle from Red Mcccombs Hyundai Northwest to Principle Hyundai of Boerne it failed on the highway. The vehicle was making a loud knocking noise and would not accelerate past 50 mph. Check engine light was on again. We managed to bring the vehicle into Principle Hyundai of Boerne and they evaluated the vehicle. The service advisor immediately agreed to hearing the knocking noise. After evaluating the vehicle, the te

Potential Consequences:

Four days while driving on streets and freeways in Oklahoma City My 2017 Hyundai Tucson turned off and stalled. Lots of lights came on. Luckily I was able to get out of traffic without getting rear ended. I took the suv to local Hyundai dealer and they couldn’t find the problem. The second time I took it to the dealer they replaced sensor crankshaft to clear lights that were coming on. Paid $209.27 for multi point inspection and paid $412.62 for second repair. I’m frustrated because I was without transportation for 4 days. Dealerships did not offer a car for me to drive.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Bought this one (~80K miles) ~Oct/Nov 2022 from a local dealer as a used car (I was the 2nd owner). The oil light was on when I drove it ~1500 miles. I was surprised and went to shop to do my first oil change. I thought probably that the last oil change they just did not top it up. Unfortunately, after it, I noticed that the oil consumption was much quicker than it's supposed to be and required me for oil change more frequently. On 10Feb24 (it had ~97K miles), the car started to vibrate when I started the car. I noticed a "green/blue" fume came out when I stopped/started from a traffic light. On 12Feb24 morning, I drove it to a local dealer, the ~3 miles ride became a horrible experience in my life. The car is shaking and making a terrible noise, the "green/blue" fume busted out, felt no power and could barely maintain ~30MPH speed. It's like you were driving something that going to be exploded. You pictured it. It finally reached the dealer site and I felt the car has delivered its last breath. Thanks GOD that nobody got hurt. Dealer took a look and told me that it would cost $4000 to fix it. I googled this problem and found that many people experienced the similar problem (excessive oil consumption/engine failure). Therefore, I strongly urge that Hyundai and NHTSA take proper measurement to identify the cause and prevent future disaster it may have. For Hyundai, I strongly urge you to read all the complaints on this type of vehicle (2017 Tucson AWD) through NHTSA platform. It's easy to realize that, as of 13Feb24, there are 795 complaints about this type of car, and 379 of them are linked to engine problem. It has a statical significancy and we hold you accountable . For me, I will never buy Hyundai again, and no more "Tucson garlic" dish from my menu because of "Tucson".

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The contact's family friend owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while the family friend was driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine made an abnormally loud knocking sound. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with connecting rod bearing wear and it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer denied the engine replacement due to a lack of service records. The vehicle was then towed to Hyundai of 110 (2100 Broadhollow Rd, Farmingdale, NY 11735), where it was also diagnosed with connecting rod bearing wear and it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at Hyundai of 110. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

UNKNOWN While driving, the check engine light came on and the car started idling rough. When accelerating the car would shake tremendously, feeling like it would die right there in the middle of the road. When I stopped at where I was going, I checked the oil and there was no oil in the engine. I added oil but it did not help the situation. I made an appointment with the dealership in Waco, Texas and when I showed up they stated they no longer had room for me and to make another appointment. They also stated I didn’t have a warranty as I am not the original owner even though I purchased the extended warranty and I have not passed the mileage or date. This is unacceptable as I do not feel safe driving my car and they did not honor the appointment I made.

Car has 125,000 mi on it. This will be the 3rd catalytic converter in 2 years. Second one was March of 2022. I have excessive oil consumption (1QT every other week). Which I believe causes the exhaust system to clog. It’s an engine flaw design I believe. The issues isn’t the converter but the oil consumption contributing to the clogging. The vehicle actually had complete engine failure while I was driving on the interstate Dec 23, 2023 driving at 70 miles an hour! It was caused by the clogged converter! I could have died! Thank you.
