Safety Issue:

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES350, Lexus RX350, Lexus RX450H, 2021 Sienna Hybrid, Lexus ES250, 2020-2022 Camry, Camry Hybrid, and ES300H vehicles. A short circuit may develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, preventing the front passenger air bag from deploying.

Potential Risk:
An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. This is a phased recall. The next phase is anticipated in June 2025. Multiple phases are planned through 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB15/23TA15 Lexus 23LB03/23LA03.

The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

Potential Risk:
If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly with an improved one, free of charge. Owners of specific models were notified that remedy parts were available starting January 21, 2021. Owners of other models will be notified as remedy parts become available. Remedy parts should be available for all affected vehicles by late March 2021. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 20V-012. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA02. Lexus' number for this recall is 20LA01.

Safety Issue:

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h and 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with 2.5L 4-Cylinder engines. Porosity in the engine castings may result in cracks than can allow coolant to leak internally and/or externally.

Potential Risk:
A coolant leak can cause the engine to overheat and cause a vehicle stall in conventional gasoline vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, for all involved vehicles, the engine may get damaged mechanically, possibly resulting in an engine oil leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
FREE Recall Solution:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the engine including the engine block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 3, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA04. Lexus' number for this recall is 20LA02.

THE CONTACT THEN HEARD A LOUD POPPING SOUND AND SAW WHITE SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND EXITED THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND SAW ANTIFREEZE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO LIPTON TOYOTA (1700 W. FOUND SERVICE BULLETIN TSB00007-19 GROWING NUMBER OF CUSTOMER CONCERNS ABOUT NEEDING A NEW BATTERY AFTER 1 YEAR. I BROUGHT MY 2020 TOYOTA CAMRY INTO DAYTONA TOYOTA FOR DIAGNOSIS OF DEAD BATTERY ISSUE-TECHNICIAN TOOK 8 HOURS AND SUGGESTED I MUST HAVE LEFT THE DOOR OR TRUNK OPEN. TECHNICIAN DID SAY I SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED A NEW BATTERY WHICH IS A NEW DESIGN, PART #00544H6074770.THIS BATTERY IS RATED AT 770CCA VS MY BATTERY WHICH IS RATED AT 560 CCA. THE NEW BATTERY ACTUALLY CHECKS OUT AT 990 CCA! TECHNICIAN SAID IT IS THE NEWLY DESIGNED BATTERY FOR THE TOYOTA CAMRY AND RAV4 AND WOULD GREATLY REDUCE DEAD BATTERY PROBLEM, HOWEVER TOYOTA WOULD NOT AUTHORIZE A REPLACEMENT. I BROUGHT MY 2020 TOYOTA CAMRY INTO DAYTONA TOYOTA FOR DIAGNOSIS OF DEAD BATTERY ISSUE-TECHNICIAN TOOK 8 HOURS AND SUGGESTED I MUST HAVE LEFT THE DOOR OR TRUNK OPEN. TECHNICIAN DID SAY I SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED A NEW BATTERY WHICH IS A NEW DESIGN, PART #00544H6074770.THIS BATTERY IS RATED AT 770CCA VS MY BATTERY WHICH IS RATED AT 560 CCA. THE NEW BATTERY ACTUALLY CHECKS OUT AT 990 CCA! TECHNICIAN SAID IT IS THE NEWLY DESIGNED BATTERY FOR THE TOYOTA CAMRY AND RAV4 AND WOULD GREATLY REDUCE DEAD BATTERY PROBLEM, HOWEVER TOYOTA WOULD NOT AUTHORIZE A REPLACEMENT. I HAVE SPENT 2 FULL DAYS CHASING THIS PROBLEM AT 2 DEALERSHIPS AND TOYOTA SAYS IT IS MY FAULT FOR LEAVING A DOOR, HOOD, OR TRUNK OPEN-ABSURD! THIS IS TRULY LOUSY SERVICE ON A BRAND NEW VEHICLE WITH AN UNDERLYING SERIOUS PROBLEM. FOR THE IMMEDIATE TIME I DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLE WHEN NOT GOING TO USE THE CARE FOR 4 OR 5 DAYS. ALSO RELATED TO THE ELECTRONICS GOING CRAZY, IS THE RCD FEATURE USED WHILE IS REVERSE GEAR. AFTER THE CAR IS JUMPED, THAT FEATURE NEEDS TO BE RESET BY A TECHNICIAN SO THE BACK UP CAMERA SYSTEM WORKS PROPERLY. THIS IS VERY QUICKLY BECOMING MORE THEN AN ANNOYANCE.

ALSO RELATED TO THE ELECTRONICS GOING CRAZY, IS THE RCD FEATURE USED WHILE IS REVERSE GEAR. AFTER THE CAR IS JUMPED, THAT FEATURE NEEDS TO BE RESET BY A TECHNICIAN SO THE BACK UP CAMERA SYSTEM WORKS PROPERLY. THIS IS VERY QUICKLY BECOMING MORE THEN AN ANNOYANCE.

WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START THE CAR FROM SITTING JUST OVERNIGHT, THE DASH WILL FLASH AND CLICK AS IF THE BATTERY IS DEAD. THE CAR WON'T START AND HAS TO BE JUMPED. HOWEVER WHEN YOU HAVE THE CAR CHECKED, IT'S NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY. THERE IS SOMETHING DRAINING THE BATTERY OVERNIGHT THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE. I ALREADY HAVE A COMPLAINT NUMBER 11342422. I HAVE STUDIED THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM FURTHER AND I THINK I HAVE IDENTIFIED 2 PLACES OF SAFETY CONCERN. IN NORMAL MODE, SINCE I CAN PUSH THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, MY INTERPRETATION IS THAT THE RESERVOIR CAN ACCEPT ALL OF THE ADDITIONAL FLUID BEING PUMPED. IT ALSO TELLS ME THAT THE FINAL FORCE ON THE BRAKE PADS WILL BE WHATEVER THE RESISTANCE THE SPRING IN THE RESERVOIR HAS. SO I DON'T HAVE FINAL CONTROL OVER THE BRAKING EVEN UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. THE OTHER CONDITION THAT CONCERNS ME IS THE LAST DIAGRAM WHEN THE PUMP IS INTENSIFYING THE BRAKING FORCE. NOW THERE IS ALSO ANOTHER PATH FOR SOME OF THIS PUMPED FLUID TO RETURN TO THE INPUT SIDE OF THE PUMP. IF THE LEAKAGE PATH HAD NO RESISTANCE THEN THE PUMP COULD BE RECIRCULATING ALL OF THE BRAKE FLUID RESULTING IN NO BRAKING. I HOPE THAT THE LEAKAGE PATH HAS ENOUGH RESISTANCE THAT A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF BRAKE FLUID IS ENDING UP AT THE BRAKE PADS. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT IS IMPACTING MY CAR BUT I THINK IT'S A RISK TO ALL CARS WITH ABS. WHAT REALLY BOTHERS ME IS THAT I HAVE TALKED TO SERVICE MANAGERS OF 3 CAR DEALERS AND THEY ALL CLAIM THAT BEING ABLE TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR IS NORMAL.
