Safety Issue:

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Toyota Prius vehicles. A portion of the engine wire harness connected to the hybrid Power Control Unit (PCU), could contact the cover at this connection and wear, causing an electrical short circuit.

Potential Risk:
An electrical short can increase the risk of a fire.
FREE Recall Solution:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine wire harness assembly and replace it if damage is found. A protective sleeve or protective tape will be included to prevent any future damage. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is J0T.

Safety Issue:

Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (Gulf States) is recalling certain 2017 4Runner , 86, Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Corolla iM, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Prius, Prius C, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Sienna and Yaris vehicles. The spare tire air pressure was not adjusted to the proper pressure as stated on the Tire Pressure Label.

Potential Risk:
A spare tire that is not inflated to the proper value may not perform as intended, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Gulf States will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the spare tires, adjusting their pressure as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 15, 2017. Owners may contact Gulf States customer service at 1-800-444-1074. Toyota's number for this recall is 17R2.

Safety Issue:

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2015, to October 3, 2016. The affected vehicles are equipped with a foot-operated parking brake system that has a parking brake cable that may disengage.

Potential Risk:
If the parking brake cable disengages from the mechanism and the transmission is left in a gear other than 'Park' while the ignition is on and the driver leaves the vehicle, the vehicle may roll unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install a clip at the parking brake cable end to prevent the cable from disengaging, free of charge. The recall began November 10, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is G01.

TOYOTA PRIUS PRIME 2017 LANE DEPARTURE WARNING WITH STEERING ASSIST. THIS STEERING ASSIST FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK AS IT DOES IN ANY OTHER TOYOTA MODEL. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH TOYOTA ENGINEERING AND MET WITH A TOYOTA TECHNICAL REPRESENTATIVE AND THEY ADMIT THAT THE STEERING ASSIST FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK AS IT DOES IN ANY OTHER TOYOTA MODEL. AS YOU WILL SEE FROM MY ATTACHED DOCUMENT THIS FUNCTION REALLY DOESN'T WORK AT ALL. I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS A REGULATED SAFETY FEATURE OR NOT BUT IT WAS SUGGESTED BY A TOYOTA EMPLOYEE THAT I MAKE THE NHTSA AWARE OF THIS FAILURE AS IT COULD BE A SAFETY CONCERN THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED AT. MY NEW CAR, A 2017 PRIUS 4 TOURING, COMES WITH NO SPARE TIRE. THERE ARE THREE PRIUS MODELS LIKE THAT, EVEN FOR THE 2018 MODEL YEAR. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THE RELATED SAFETY ASPECTS OF THAT TOYOTA DECISION? IN THE WESTERN US, ESPECIALLY, THERE ARE MANY PAVED ROADS WITH LITTLE OR NO TRAFFIC AND SPOTTY, IF ANY, CELL PHONE SERVICE. TYPICALLY, THEY ARE IN DESERT AREAS, SCORCHING IN THE SUMMER, FRIGID IN WINTER, WITH TOWNS FAR APART. IF A DRIVER OF A CAR LIKE MINE HAS A TIRE BLOWOUT IN SUCH A REMOTE AREA, HE/SHE IS LITERALLY STRANDED. THE SUPPLIED TIRE REPAIR KIT WILL NOT HELP IN CASE OF A BLOWOUT. AVERAGE OWNERS WILL NOT EVEN KNOW THEY ARE WITHOUT A SPARE TIRE UNTIL THEY NEED ONE. MORE THAN AN INCONVENIENCE, THIS COULD BE FATAL TO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS IN EXTREME HEAT OR COLD. Potential Consequences:

1) THE EVENT OCCURRED ON OCTOBER 4, 2017. 2) 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS WITH APPROXIMATELY 19,980 MILES. 3) THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVED ON SCHEDULE AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. 4) AT THE PRIOR INSPECTION NO DAMAGE OR ABNORMAL WEAR WAS REPORTED. 5) FROM THE TIME OF THE 15,000 MILE INSPECTION NO DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE TIRE. 6) AT NO TIME DID THE TIRE PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT, DID THE TIRE INFLATION WARNING ANNUNCIATOR ILLUMINATE. 7) WHILE TRAVELING ON A STATE HIGHWAY (SIMILAR TO A INTERSTATE) WHICH IS IN VERY GOOD AND SMOOTH CONDITION, DRY AT THE TIME, FREE OF DEBRIS, STRAIGHT AT THE LOCATION OF THE INCIDENT, AT APPROXIMATELY THE POST SPEED LIMIT OF 70 MPH. WITH VIRTUALLY NO WARNING THE LEFT FRONT TIRE FAILED CATASTROPHICALLY WITH ENTIRE OUTBOARD PORTION OF THE TREAD SEPARATING FROM THE SIDEWALL STRUCTURE.
