Recall Date: Dec 22, 2023
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.

Potential Risk:
A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt, free of charge. If engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk were mailed June 20, 2024. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

During my commute from work on 9/19/22 in my 2019 Ford EcoSport my oil pressure light came on and I lost all engine power. A low oil pressure notification came across the vehicle's gauge system (above the steering wheel). I was able to get the vehicle home and contacted Conway Ford. After discussion with Conway Ford, I was told I could pay $600 for them to diagnose the vehicle. I reached out to my local mechanic, and he let me know that many of this make and model vehicle were having this same issue. He indicated I would need a new motor due to the way the vehicle was build. I spoke to the local dealership again and was told there were no replacement motors available for purchase. After paying for a vehicle for 18 months that cannot be driven and must be registered and insured (due to the car loan) I reached out Ford Motor beginning in January of 2024 after seeing information on a recall of EcoSports. Ford Motor said they would have a letter coming to me in February and a remedy for these vehicles. The letter was received, but indicated that there is no remedy available at this time and they are hoping to have one at some point in the second quarter of the year. I again reached out to Ford Motor and asked how they intended to handle this and offering no solution they asked me what I wanted. I requested they buy the vehicle back. After several phone calls, Ford Motor agreed to review the vehicle and consider it for buy back and after getting the run around I was denied for the buy back and told I could reach out to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). However, since the vehicle was purchased more than 365 days ago, the BBB recommended I contact Consumer Affairs and NHTSA.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

While driving the car, it started stalling and making a cranking noise, was able to make it home but then, the next day, when tried to start the car, the oil light turned off, the noise was extremely loud and it turned off by itself. Called dealer and they told me about the recall and that there's no fix until mid Summer. Ford hasn't issued to stop driving the car but how can I drive a car that I don't feel safe to drive, what about if I cause an accident or if someone hits me because the car turns off? This is a serious and stressful matter, I've been having to take Uber to be able to make it to my doctor's appointments. I took the car back in Sept of last year to Alan Jay Ford in Sebring and after paying $257.84, they said the car just needed the computer to be resetted, then, car was making weird noise again and took it to AutoNation Ford Margate and after $1440.92, they said it was just a tube that needed to be reconnected. Were these repairs actually related to this recall "engine oil pump belt tensioner arm to fracture, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure" this can increase "the risk of a crash". How is it possible that so a huge company as Ford is, doesn't have this part that is causing other major issues? I really need my car to be fixed or replaced with another car or get a loaner plus I would like an investigation to determine if the two places that I took the car failed to fix it correctly and could've put my life and my family's in danger.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On 2/9/24 my Ford Ecosport went into complete engine failure. The dash indicator lights for oil pressure low/check engine light/powertrain malfunction while on my way home from work. I was in the turning lane at a stop light when the car died. The car lost all power and would not even turn on to get into a safe area. After pushing the car to the side- I had to call a tow truck ($154) to have the car transported to Ford. There they ran their diagnostic test ($225) and it was found to have the faulty oil pump. Because this "recall" I am told is only a "notice" - the cost to fix the car is quoted at ($9000) as it needs a whole new engine now. I am told they have "no clue" when they can fix it and I am now out a car and transportation to my full time job. I have had to rent a car (not in my name as I could not) $ 571- month- Ford refused to give me a loaner vehicle due to it not being a recall also - I contacted Ford and was told the same thing.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Wednesday [XXX] as I am driving to pick up my son from work — my car was making a rattling noise - I took it to get an oil change prior to picking up my son as it was coming up due for one — and as I begin driving to pick up my son the Low Engine oil pressure light came on. I contacted ford motor company and created a case immediately. They informed me my next steps were to take car to dealership for a diagnosis. They assured me that the issue would be taken care of that ford has given them separate instructions for this recall specifically as they are aware it is serious and potentially costly that the dealership can contact (SSC?)- their internal department and request for repair coverage and rental coverage — Thursday [XXX] I took my vehicle as requested. A loner vehicle was delivered to me on 2.18 thanks to Dan at Elder Ford of Tampa. Today [XXX] I am notified by my service advisor that the vehicle needs a new engine due to the issue. He put in two case requests one for rental and one for repair coverage but they have not heard back from ford motor company — I called ford motor company client relations again today and keep being told that because it’s an advanced recall they will notify dealers when they have the remedy and/or parts by second quarter this year — I understand for those who the issue has not yet impacted their vehicles however that doesn’t apply to me I have an inoperable vehicle and I’m stuck waiting to get confirmation of coverage for a repair I cannot afford and for a rental I cannot afford for a defective product sold to me by ford. I drive my 7 year old to and from school and after school activities I am grateful we didn’t crash or something worse didn’t happen to us. Here I am 5 days later with no resolution and no commitment from Ford Motor Company on the coverage for the loner vehicle or the repairs. Potential Consequences:

- The engine oil pressure was lost due to the manufacture of the vehicle and now our vehicle is currently in the hop. We do not have reliable transportation to work. - Engine went down in the middle of the highway which cost our lives at risk -Problem has not been reproduced. - Has not been inspected - No warning I am needing to get in touch with Ford manufacture to supply a solution for providing me with transportation to my job. I have spent over +14,000 in car payment to have a reliable vehicle and for me to not have a car due to the manufacture is inexcusable. I am needing a rental car to assist me with my request. I cannot wait for 4 months until the "parts" to come into a dealership for my car to be repaired.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Our vehicle has had turbo problems for over a year and a half. The turbo was replaced once. Problems with rev hang and transmission rpm increasing randomly started happening. Then came the smell of gas/oil. The dealership had said it must be an internal problem because they couldn't find anything. Then most recently it was low oil pressure and the car dropping speed on the highway and not being able to get up to speed. It started making a rattling/clinking noise and wasn't driving well at all. It was towed on January 22, 2024, to the dealership. It has been at the dealership for three weeks now. The dealership is waiting on word from Ford on what to do for us because we are still under warranty.
