Ford Motor Company
NHTSA Campaign: 22V413000 SAFETY RECALL
2.9M Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Jun 10, 2022
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

Potential Risk:
A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

Recall Date: Aug 11, 2020
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Ford Edge and 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles. The front brake hoses may rupture prematurely.

Potential Risk:
A ruptured front brake hose will cause a brake fluid leak, lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front brake hoses with the new hoses that have a revised braid material, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim letter notifying owners of the safety risk was mailed September 21, 2020. A second letter will be sent once parts are available, which is expected to begin April 15, 2021. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

As I approached 50,000 miles on my car, I started to notice the car rumbling when I turned it on. Increasingly, I also started to hear the sound of water rushing towards the front of the car upon starting the vehicle as well as occasionally when I would brake while driving. On a few occasions, it took me several attempts to start the vehicle, or I would need to hold the push to start button for a longer period of time to start the car. Shortly after reaching 50,000 miles, the check engine light came on. I brought it to my local mechanic who told me the problem was caused by a 3rd cylinder misfire, which could be due to a possible cracked gasket. He suggested that I bring it to the dealership where I purchased the car, and that they would be aware of the issue, as it is a known issue in the 2017 Ford Edge. After investigating the issue and running a test to confirm, a mechanic at the Ford dealership in Danbury, CT confirmed the issue was related to a cracked gasket that was leaking coolant into the engine. Coolant leaking into the engine is obviously a very serious issue as the lack of coolant can cause the engine to overheat, smoke, and can even result in an engine fire. Fortunately, this issue has not caused an accident, so the police, manufacturer, or insurance representatives have not inspected the vehicle yet to my knowledge. The car is available for inspection upon request at Colonial Ford in Danbury, CT and is currently awaiting a response from Ford Corporation. Unfortunately, the car's 5 year warranty expired in October 2022, nearly 10,000 miles short of the alternative warranty. A Google search reveals many people have had this issue with the 2017 Ford Edge. A recall should be issued to prevent serious injury and potentially death due to the faulty pieces that were used by the manufacturer to build this engine. I am trying to work with Ford to cover the cost of repairs, but so far they have been unwilling to help as the car is outside of the warranty period.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

2017 Ford Edge SE, one owner vehicle, clean title, always maintained properly. The vehicle ran rough after startup and seemed to be lacking power during acceleration. A malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) did not display at that time. Recently, the vehicle has been running worse, blowing white exhaust smoke, especially after sitting overnight, and consuming coolant. The MIL finally displayed the morning of June 10th, 2023. The code is P0303. The vehicle has been diagnosed with a coolant intrusion issue on cylinder number three. A catastrophic failure of the engine, requiring removal and replacement of the long block which leaves the customer on the hook for thousands of dollars in parts and labor for a well know design flaw, which is apparent by the release of multiple technical service bulletins https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10162071-0001.pdf, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10169807-0001.pdf, https://static.oemdtc.com/TSB/MC-10214126-0001.pdf, an updated engine design to replace the flawed engine https://fordauthority.com/2022/09/ford-2-0l-ecoboost-coolant-issue-and-fix-detailed-by-tech-video/, class action lawsuit https://www.fordecoboostlawsuit.com/, and countless forums and videos with affected customers.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

I was parked. Pressed brake to start car; brake pedal went all the way to the floor. When the car started warning message appeared that brake fluid was low. I had no prior warnings/signs of brake failure. I had no brakes whatsoever making the car undriveable. Car was taken to Firestone Complete Auto Care where it was determined a rear brake hose had prematurely ruptured, whereby leaking all brake fluid. Said brake hoses should last 20+ years. Brake hose was replaced by Firestone.

Potential Consequences:

Within the past few weeks I recall hearing an explosive sound while driving. I pulled over to assess the situation but could not see any obvious cause of the loud noise. I seldom open the moon roof but when I did I made the connection between the explosive sound and the shattered glass moon roof. My research shows that there have been many reported incidents of shattering moon roofs and I would like to know if the manufacturer is liable for the damages.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The 2.0 Ecoboost engine of our 2017 Ford Edge overheated at @65K miles leaving my wife stranded and the vehicle in danger of catching fire. We first noticed a check engine light @60K with diagnostic code P0301 cylinder misfire detected, so I replaced spark plugs and check engine light went out. At @63K check engine light came back on so thinking it was a bad tank of gas I added a fuel treatment and again the check engine light went out. At @64K miles the check engine light once again comes on and before I could get it in to our Ford dealer to figure out what is going with the car my wife got message on dash engine was overheating. After towing it to Ford dealer for a diagnosis of the problem we found out it was due to a coolant intrusion between cylinders 1 and 2 which caused the engine to run out of coolant resulting in the engine to overheat. In 2017 Ford began producing the 2.0 Ecoboost engines with a new open deck block design with channels cut between the cylinders for engine coolant passage. Unfortunately, this new design was flawed because it does not provide adequate sealing area between the cylinders for a proper head gasket seal, which in turn, leaves the engine prone to coolant leakage into the cylinders causing premature engine failure. Ford is well aware of the faulty design and have since corrected it with a new engine block design which incorporates cross drilling the engine block for coolant passage instead of machining cuts through the area needed to provide a proper head gasket seal. Ford TSB 22-2229 addresses the the problem requiring the replacement of the faulty designed engine with a new long block assembly replacement manufactured in accordance to the new 2.0 engine manufacturing design specifications. This engine replacement procedure is very expensive at over $7000 especially when the customers 60K powertrain warranty has expired and Ford customer service will provide NO help assisting with the cost of fixing the problem.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

Under acceleration the vehicle will sometimes enter into limp mode. Vehicle will violently brake and come to a halt and the driver can only accelerate up to +/-5MPH to be able to pull off to the side of the road. The deceleration when this happens is sudden and violent. During this event the steering wheel is difficult to turn. ALL dash warning and fault lights flash during the malfunction. You have to pull over, shut the vehicle off, and then restart. This has happened with our two kids in the vehicle while merging onto a freeway. I have brought it to Ford 4 times. The first time they said a harness was loose and they fixed it. Other times they blamed my use of a narrower diameter winter tire, but it happens with the stock wheels as well. The malfunction continues to happen. They have not been able to duplicate the issue, so they asked me to drive around with a OBD2 scanner attached. When the malfunction happens, no error codes are reported. The Ford technician said that if it were their vehicle, they would not drive it with their children in the car. Ford has had the vehicle for almost a month now and have requested we pick it up because they cannot duplicate the malfunction and have suggested that I drive until it happens again, which is pointless as the malfunction does not trigger an error code. My wife refuses to drive the car, especially with our children in it. I have talked to Ford corporate, and they said they would escalate, but now they are not returning my emails or answering their phones. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. It may be helpful to know that when I first started bringing the vehicle in for this malfunction, it was still 100% under warranty. Thank you.
