Ford Motor Company
NHTSA Campaign: 22V413000 SAFETY RECALL
2.9M Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Jun 10, 2022
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

Potential Risk:
A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Ford Edge and 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles. The front brake hoses may rupture prematurely.

Potential Risk:
A ruptured front brake hose will cause a brake fluid leak, lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front brake hoses with the new hoses that have a revised braid material, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim letter notifying owners of the safety risk was mailed September 21, 2020. A second letter will be sent once parts are available, which is expected to begin April 15, 2021. Potential Consequences:

Coolant leaking into engine. Check engine light came on 07/11/2021. Took vehicle to local auto store for diagnostic test. Was told a mid ire in cylinder 2. Took vehicle to neighborhood auto shop on 07/12. Mechanic said it was the same issue to take it to the dealership due to the warranty. Brought my vehicle to dealership on 07/13. On the way to the dealership my vehicle died out on the expressway. After 6 hours of waiting, was told did not know what was causing the problem but needed to keep it. Was not provided another vehicle. I had to come out of pocket for a rental. Called on 7/20 and was told it might be my transmission and low engine coolant. Called again on 07/23, was told it was the battery. I called on 7/26 was told I need a new engine. There are complaints about this issue. Ford motor company knows about the issue. This issue with the vehicle could has caused serious injury or death to me or my family. The lack of communication is horrible.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Potential Consequences:

I have a ecoboost engine on my Ford Edge that has known issues from Ford. Currently after driving past the 60k mile warranty cylinder 4 on my engine started leaking coolant into the engine block. I took my car to Ford to get it checked because I started to get notifications that the engine was overheating while in the car with my toddler. The mechanic informed me later that there was a TSB 19-2346 on my car and many others like it. I was told Ford would no help in anyway with replacing the engine. There was supposed to be a sensor inside my car to let me know about the coolant levelling dropping the way they have been but there wasn’t even that. The car only let me know of the issue at the end when it started overheating to dangerous levels

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

After received a recall notice for 20S42 in May 2021 I have contacted local dealerships weekly and they have continued to tell me that they can't get the parts from Ford. I called Ford today and they tell me that the parts that they originally sent out still have a defect so they are going to be issuing new parts and a NEW recall notice at the end of July. It is ridiculous for it to take this long to resolve something that has been deemed a safety issue. Also, the dealerships do not seem to have this information because all they know is "they can't get the parts". The backorder/issue with parts should have been communicated to the dealerships and vehicle owners.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The engine of my 2017 Ford Edge began to misfire intermittently in 2019. When it was finally able to be diagnosed in 2020, it was determined fuel had escaped around a spark plug. The spark plugs were replaced. Approximately one year later, the issue began again. Upon further inspection, it was found that a head gasket had gone bad. While there is not definite evidence of a coolant leak, it is suspected a leak may have initiated the issue. Research has also indicated the engine block is most likely cracked. While driving, the engine would often lull and stop accelerating. This happened several times as I attempted to drive down the interstate, being forced to exit the highway due to not being able to move with the speed of traffic. After the first repair of the spark plugs, the car seemed to drive fine, however, they shouldn't have gone bad within a year of install indicating a much larger issue. The car is unable to be driven. Even with replacing the head gasket, I do not feel the car would be safe with a cracked engine block. Nor should the motor have gone bad this soon.
