SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

While driving to pick up my wife from work, I was not able to accelerate past 35-40 mph. Upon arriving home, we noticed that the brake lights were staying on. We took the car to our local Ford dealer and was told it was a stop lamp switch pad that had broken off and that, unfortunately, the pad was not sold separately, I would need to purchase the entire brake pedal assembly and pay for the labor to have it installed ($585.11). Shortly after this occurred I found that 2013-2015 models of the Ford Fusion (same body) had been recalled for the same issue. The pad becomes brittle and breaks apart when the car is predominantly in hot and humid climates. I live in Deep South Texas where temperatures and humidity hover around 100 degrees for 10 months a year. I believe other model years should be added to the recall list. Not being able to accelerate could have caused an accident.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

On Saturday [XXX] I noticed when I opened my driver side door, the dash light & the light on my touch screen began flickering. I didn't think much about it at the time, but the next day, [XXX] as myself & my wife were traveling on the highway, I tried to turn on my cruise control but it would not come on. I then tried to adjust my stereo volume on the steering wheel & it wasn't working either. Well, the next day I checked the fuses & they were fine, so that's when I went online & found out that the clock spring in the steering wheel could most likely be the problem. Well I decided to dig a little deeper into the matter & I found out that some 2016 Ford trucks had been recalled because of faulty clock springs which also could cause the airbag not to deploy when needed. I was just told by an employee from a local Ford Dealership that the 2016 Ford Fusion was not a part of that recall, which I believe should have been a part of that recall, because I'm pretty sure that the same clock springs that were used in those 2016 trucks, were used in the 2016 Ford Fusions. I would like to ask that you would please look into this mater, because this is a serious mater, & I think Ford needs to fix this problem. They should be responsible for all of their vehicles with these bad clock springs & not just those trucks only. Thank you for your time & all you do to keep us safe on the road. God Bless you all! SEAT BELTS

Potential Consequences:

After the car has been sitting in the sun with the sun shining on the drivers side door, on a warm day, the seatbelt on the driver side cannot not be extracted until the car cools down. This has happened several times. I have talked to the dealer and he says that he has not seen this problem before. I have googled the issue and it appears that I am not the only one who has had this problem. I’ve had to drive several times without using my seatbelt as I cannot use the seatbelt.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I started the vehicle and smelled ash. As I drove away from home at very low speed in my neighborhood, I started to notice white smoke which gradually increased. I immediately parked the car. There was no signs of leaks under the vehicle (but it has extensive underbody covesr). There was moisture and fluid droplets coming from the exhaust pipes. I started the vehicle remotely to view it from the rear and witnessed white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes, then immediately shut it off. I had it towed to my mechanic who checked the vehicle and noted no issues with the coolant combustion or engine pressure. I had it towed to another shop which replaced the turbo last year, and they checked it for turbo issues. They noted that the engine is dumping coolant into the exhaust system, and that this is an issue know to Ford.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Coolant intrusion into cylinder(s): My vehicle suddenly overheated while I was traveling on a highway that had stretches of ongoing construction and no shoulder. While attempting to reach a portion of the highway with a shoulder, my car went into "limp" mode. I had to shut the vehicle off and wait for it to cool. After about an hour I was able to have someone bring me coolant and I was able to restart my vehicle and get to a safe location. My car continues to overheat whenever I try to accelerate on a highway, leaving me in a position where I am trying to pull my car to the shoulder without causing an accident. There is white smoke coming from my exhaust, my check engine light comes on, and I am losing coolant, although no leaks can be found. My car has ALL symptoms listed under Ford's Technical Service Bulletin 20-2100 issued 01 April 2020 titled "TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 1.5L EcoBoost - Low Coolant, White Exhaust Smoke And/Or Illuminated MIL - Built On Or Before 10-Jun-2019". This intrusion can cause my vehicle to catch on fire! I have had my vehicle evaluated and scanned and am now having to spend over $1,500 to replace the water pump in hopes it alleviates the overheating. Ford is expressly aware of this issue, and I have found that there have been multiple class-action suits filed against Ford for this exact issue.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Started with a check engine code misfire in cylinder 3. Took it to a shop for them to say I needed a new spark plug and coil. Replaced the parts, and still had the code. Kept driving the car and then started having rough idling, white exhaust smoke, and stalling. Upon further research noticed I was missing coolant but the mechanic couldn’t find the leak. Continued driving the car, experiencing trouble accelerating, stalling, and white exhaust smoke. Replaced fuel injectors. Up until one day I went to start the vehicle and it would crank but not turn over. Had it towed to a mechanic who said they couldn’t explain why I had no spark. Then to another mechanic who said I have coolant leaking into my cylinder 3 that will require engine replacement. This is a known issue with fords with the same engine. Addressed ford and they said there was nothing they could do without a recall.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

The previous 2 models of this car had a recall on the button underneath the brake switch that is engaged by the pedal. They have not changed the design and the 2016 has the very same issue, plus another issue. We were able to replace the button ourselves since they decided not to admit that they did not change these parts even though they knew this was an issue years prior. Not only that, but the holder for the switch is part of the entire pedal assembly and it is the only part of this assembly that is made of plastic. The rest is metal. The problem is that since this is plastic, and it resides where the heat comes out from under the dash, the part becomes brittle and breaks into a million pieces just with normal wear. The pedal assembly is super expensive and you can't even get it out without removing the entire dash. We tried to get a used part and spent half of the day taking the part out only to find that it had done the exact same thing that my daughter's car did. The plastic disintegrates and falls apart. At that point there is no brake switch and the brake lights stay on and the car will decrease speed without warning or won't accelerate. This is something I am pretty sure Ford is well aware of since they recalled part of this defective design years ago. They just didn't admit that the entire thing is designed to fail. It is only a matter of time due to the constant heat that the plastic holder for the brake switch is on. All they had to do was change it to metal and it would have fixed that part of the issue, but then there is also the button itself that disintegrates due to the same heat exposure causing the symptoms listed above. They knew very well the design was flawed since the 2 previous years of this car were recalled for the same issue, and they are still using the same parts in the exact same way. They have not fixed anything and this company needs to be held accountable before someone gets hurt.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

Gear shifter was stuck in “Park” and unable to move shifter and change gears. The car was actually in Neutral. There were not warning signals the car was in neutral and could roll away. This puts the driver, passengers, pedestrians, and property at risk of injury/damage. Several recalls have been issued for 2016 Ford Fusions transmission bushings for this exact issue. When I contacted the Ford dealership they stated my VIN number was not impacted by the recall. I had the vehicle towed to my mechanic where the issue was identified as the transmission bushing, which they replaced. I then contacted Ford Motor Company who looked up my VIN and stated my vehicle DID have a recall on the bushing and that the part was replaced in Dec 2019 (prior to me owning the car). The replacement part used to address the recall had the same issue as what it was original part was recalled for.
