Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Passport and Pilot vehicles equipped with Continental tires. On the affected vehicles, it is possible that one or more tires were cured for too long during tire production.

Potential Risk:

Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Odyssey, 2019-2020 Passport, and 2019-2021 Pilot vehicles. Incorrect instrument panel control module software can cause the instrument panel to not display critical information, such as engine oil pressure, speedometer, and gear selector position until the next ignition cycle. Additionally, it can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

Operating a vehicle without a functioning instrument panel or rearview camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Safety Issue:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Pilot, 2019-2020 Odyssey and 2019-2020 Passport vehicles. Incorrect central network software programming may cause several errors to occur that can delay or prevent the rearview camera image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

Potential Risk:
A delayed or inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Potential Risk:
In the event of a crash, incomplete body welding may provide inadequate protection to occupants, increasing the risk of an injury.

Defect Description:

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

On two separate occasions the vehicle has not started in extreme cold. First Occasion: February 7, 2021, attempted to remote start the vehicle, but the vehicle would not start. Attempted to start the vehicle from inside, but would not start. Called AAA roadside assistance to have the vehicle jump started and the vehicle still would not start. Second Occasion: Attempted to start the vehicle and it would not start. Attempted to use a roadside battery pack to jump the vehicle, but would not start. Hooked the battery up to a truck for 45 minutes, while the truck was running, and attempted to start the vehicle several times, but the vehicle never started. Called Honda roadside assistance and was informed that we would need to wait up to two hours for a tow truck. We waited 5 hours before the tow truck arrived. While waiting I called Dahl Honda of Onalaska for assistance. I purchased a new battery from them. They sent a driver out to deliver it to the parking lot we were stranded in. I installed the new batter but the vehicle still would not start. When the tow truck arrived, we tried to jump the new battery with the Honda employee present, but the vehicle still would not start. The tow truck driver delivered the disabled vehicle to Dahl Honda in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Each time dealership could not diagnose the problem that caused the vehicle to not start. Was told that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. The two times the issue has occurred, the outside temperatures were below zero, thus putting my family (two very young children) in danger. The vehicle was inspected by Dahl Honda in LaCrosse, WI and Schlossmann Honda in Milwaukee. No warning lamps, check engine lights, etc.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My Honda passport had approx 10k miles and I was driving down a blind s curve less than 1 mile from my home on a clear dry day. The passport lost power, and when the gas pedal was depressed there was a loud grinding sound but no engagement - it seemed like the transmission was grinding and disengaged, or that power was not being transmitted by the engine. I coasted down to safe spot at bottom of hill, and stopped vehicle, put it in Park and turned it off. Then I started it again, transmission/power seemed to re-engage and I drove straight to dealership. They kept the car and told me they checked and found no codes. I asked about checking transmission fluid and they said they did but I don’t believe them. I called Honda corporate customer service and they told me they “couldn’t do anything until it happened to me again” and that I “needed to address problems and issues with my dealer.” (It was dealer who told me to call corporate.) Since this time, I have received notice of fuel pump recall and that has been repaired. I wonder if the loss of power I experienced was fuel pump, or if it was related to transmission issue (same as Odyssey) for the 9-speed transmission.

Defect Description:

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

Potential Consequences:

The vehicle’s adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation braking system are flawed. The vehicle will give false collision alerts (large brake sign on screen and shaking steering wheel) when oncoming traffic is approaching to the left of you. Both vehicles are in their respective lanes. Also, the adaptive cruise control will slow down or suddenly brake the vehicle when a vehicle to your left is driving slower. There are no vehicles directly in front of you. Both vehicles again are in their respective lanes. I have video evidence of this that I can provide. I have made Honda and dealership personnel aware of this. No one representing Honda has been able to resolve the issues. One service manager said he can’t do anything to fix it until Honda releases an update, meaning this person acknowledges there is an issue. Another service staff stated to me that his wife’s Honda Pilot has the same issue and implied I shouldn’t worry about it. This is a serious flaw and I expect Honda to release an update to address this issue. This issue has been occurring since I took delivery of the vehicle (November 2019 with less than 1000 miles) and has been ongoing until present. The date and mileage listed is one of the most recent occurances.

MY ZF-9 SPEED TRANSMISSION SLIPPED OUT OF GEAR WHILE DRIVING, RESULTING IN LOUD GRINDING, LURCHING, AND COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING. INCIDENT OCCURRED IMMEDIATELY AFTER A FULL STOP AT THE END OF MY LANE BEFORE ENTERING MAIN ROADWAY AND DOWNHILL CURVES. I HAD TO COAST TO THE BOTTOM WITH THE GRINDING AND GNASHING GEARS AND BUCKING, LURCHING VEHICLE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM, NOR HAD THEY EVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. THEY ALSO STATED THAT DIAGNOSTICS DID NOT IDENTIFY ANY ISSUES WHICH IS ODD BECAUSE I COULD GIVE THEM A TIMEFRAME OF EXACTLY WHEN INCIDENT AND SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF POWER OCCURRED. I ALSO CALLED HONDA CORPORATE WHO TRIED TO TELL ME THAT THIS WAS "A NORMAL BREAKING IN" SCENARIO AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT THEM WHEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN BECAUSE THEY WOULD DO NOTHING FOR FIRST REPORTED INCIDENT. CLEARLY, AMERICAN HONDA CO DOES NOT CARE ABOUT CONSUMER SAFETY. I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

SUN ROOF SPONTANEOUSLY EXPLODED ON HIGHWAY WITH NO OTHER VEHICLES IN AREA, NOR ANYTHING OVERHEAD, NOR ANY ROAD DEBRIS. PRIOR TO EXPLOSION, MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN GARAGED AND NEVER HIT WITH DEBRIS OF ANY KIND. WHEN INCIDENT OCCURRED I WAS DRIVING UP RAMP TO HIGHWAY SPEED (60MPH) FIRST THERE WAS A LOUD POP, THEN A VERY LOUD EXPLOSION ABOUT 200-300 YARDS LATER. I LOOKED TO SEE IF ANYONE WAS AROUND ME (OR ANYTHING OVER ME) IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMEONE WAS SHOOTING AT MY CAR. SHORTLY AFTER THE LOUD EXPLOSION I COULD HEAR GLASS FRAGMENTS RAINING DOWN INSIDE MY SUN SHIELD (THANKFULLY CLOSED) OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED IN SHATTERED GLASS WHILE DRIVING HIGHWAY SPEEDS. GLASS FRAGMENTS SKITTERED OVER MY ROOF AND SHOOK ABOVE MY HEAD UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO EXIT ROADWAY AND MAKE A COMPLETE STOP. I CLIMBED ONTO MY RUNNING BOARD AND SAW DIAGONAL STRESS FRACTURES FROM CORNER TO CORNER. I DROVE STRAIGHT TO DEALERSHIP SINCE IT WAS A SLIGHTLY OVERCAST DAY AND I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT RAIN. I TOOK ANOTHER PICTURE OF THE SHATTERED SUNROOF AT THE DEALERSHIP: THE GLASS IS BROKEN OUT IN THE SHAPE OF AN HOURGLASS. DEALER TOLD ME REPAIR WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. I CALLED AMERICAN HONDA AND THEY CLAIMED THEY'D NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING AND REFUSED TO COVER DAMAGE AND TOLD ME TO HAVE REPAIR DONE BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY. FORTUNATELY, MY DEALER ULTIMATELY TOOK RESPONSIBILITY FOR HONDA'S SHORTCOMINGS AND REPAIRED AT NO COST. I AM AFRAID TO EVER DRIVE VEHICLE WITH SUNSHADE OPEN FOR FEAR THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. I AM LUCKY I DID NOT CRASH ON HIGHWAY AND WOULD HAVE IF SHADE HAD BEEN OPEN.
