ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On three separate occasions the engine developed a misfire after driving approximately 90 miles in inclement weather. During this time period the transmission began to make hard upshiftswhile accelerating and when down shifting the transmission felt as though it would lurch or surge between gear selection. Use of paddle shifter to manually select gears would result in limited acceleration after the transmission returned to the drive mode. The transmission would not downshift on its own after the paddle shifters were used unless the floor shift select was manually placed in neutral. Then normal operation would resume. The vehicle was returned to the dealership and had the transmission software update performed. This did not resolve issues. These incidents began in October of 2022 and the vehicle was was put in for service the second week of November. It remains in their possession as of 01/06/2023.

Santa Cruz transmission would not engage into drive. Therefore, vehicle could not move or be driven. Transmission seemed to be in neutral position. Had to be towed to dealer and has been there since July 28, 2022. Dealer gave a loaner vehicle. Still making payments on a new vehicle and not enjoying the ride. Who dropped the ball on this? Dealer seems as frustrated as I am.

Potential Consequences:

Hyundai has failed to remedy this known transmission defect and is placing owners of the affected vehicles lives in danger. Reprogramming of the "fail-safe" driving capability does not fix the life threating issue. While driving on Interstate 89 in Vermont on December 7 every warning light on the dashboard illuminated and my 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz slowed from 65mph to 40mph. I pulled of the road and turned the ignition off. Upon restart, the Santa Cruz seemed to perform normally. I now am afraid to drive the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I'm open to allow the vehicle to be inspected at anytime. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? After pulling out onto a busy highway of 60MPH speed limit from a right on red light, the car only would accelerate to 17MPH nearly causing a multi-car rear end accident. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The vehicle has been in service twice (going in time 3 on 12/14/22) for this issue along with other transmission issues. On the second visit the issue was identified and a fix was attempted but issues still persist. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? As of now it's only been inspected by a Hyundai dealership, and I have a case open with Hyundai and they are waiting to see what happens at 12/14 service appointment before moving forward with any other actions. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The transmission has been problematic since purchase. This 17mph max acceleration happened shortly after purchase and other issues have been persistent ever since. Holding gears with loss of power on interstate, rough vibrations at low speeds, holding gears to long, rough shifts, strange noises when shifting, and of course the max acceleration of 17mph / 3,000rpm and not being able to travel any faster being the worst / most dangerous.

Corrective Action:

LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST

Potential Consequences:

While driving down a two-lane highway at night (foggy conditions), the Lane Following Assist feature was turned on. There was a section of highway where a vehicle had previously driven through wet white paint. The paint was smeared toward the ONCOMING lane as if the vehicle had turned left after driving through the wet paint. The Lane Following Assist on my 2022 Santa Cruz detected these white paint tracks and immediately jerked the steering wheel to the left, INTO the oncoming lane. If there had been a vehicle in that lane, there would have absolutely been a head on collision. There was no opportunity to correct because the vehicle turned to the left so suddenly. This WILL cause crashes. All other safety features were also enabled. There were no known obstructions of safety sensors or cameras.
