Defect Description:
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Potential Consequences:
We have owned a 2022 Sante Fe Hybrid for less than a year. Although we haven’t had any mechanical issues until recently, I have been slightly alarmed at the number of recalls that have been fixed throughout the year. This week, our check engine light came on. We were able to drive it home and to our local dealership (Victory Hyundai in Jefferson, Ohio) for service. The problem was diagnosed as an accelerator sensor and I was told the parts have been ordered and an appointment would be scheduled next week to replace the sensor that is under warranty. I was also told that it would be safe to drive the vehicle home and around town for the next week. As I turned on the car to drive it home, I noticed the dashboard was lit up with multiple warnings that I have never seen before. I placed the car in drive with the hope that the warning lights would reset themselves. As I started to pull away, I noticed the gas pedal didn’t respond and I was only able to go 4 mph. So, I stopped in the middle of the parking lot, turned the car off, and re-started it. The same issues were present, so I looped around the parking lot at 4 mph and parked it. I went inside to the service department to explain the situation and one of the workers who attempted to help me out by bringing my car around noted a similar experience when driving the car. They went back to discuss the issue with the technician who worked on my vehicle, but I never really received any kind of explanation. They gave me a loaner car for the next week.

ENGINE
Potential Consequences:
This vehicle is a Hybrid and the issue is an on/off error message that states that the inverter coolant level issue. When I lift the hood and view the inverter coolant level it is at the same location as the car was delivered in (exactly on the high mark). I have contacted two separate Hyundai dealerships in my area and one choose not to respond and the other stated that they were aware of this issue but had no fix for it. I tried to purchase the inverter coolant from the dealer and they do not even have it in stock to sell even if the coolant level was low. They have admitted that they do not know how to fix it or what is causing this issue. It is all over the forums and Hyundai is doing nothing to address it with anyone. I have a feeling that Hyundai does not know what the issue is and I know that they are aware and making no attempt to repair or replace it. If something is important enough to have a warning light go off shouldn't it be replaceable or repairable. These cars are put out so quickly and not enough testing and dealer personnel are not trained on how to troubleshoot or repair. I purchased the vehicle for cash and if Hyundai cannot fix it I believe I should be able to return it as a defect and get my money back.

Potential Consequences:
This car is equipped with a panoramic roof that opens both all the way and tilts for ventilation. While driving 70 MPH (posted speed limit) on I-95 in North Carolina in March, we had the roof tilted open. The sky was sunny, and the temperature was about 70 degrees. The roof spontaneously exploded, sending glass particles through out the inside of the car. The car did not collide with any object; the roof just shattered on its own. I was able to safely maintain control of the car, and pulled off at the next intersection. I was able to find a vacuum in a short amount of time to clean out the shattered glass.

STEERING
Potential Consequences:
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Warnings appeared on the instrument panel at the same time the power steering would go out and I would not be able to safely steer the car. This happened on 4-5 occasions. These are the various warnings that would appear: Check Lane Following Assist System Check Blind Spot Safety System Check Driver Attention Warning System How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Not being able to steer was very concerned and happened to me while driving on a busy highway at one point. I could barely steer the car well enough to get it to the shoulder. I had to cross 4 lanes of traffic during rush hour. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I had it towed to the dealer the final time it happened. They stated that it is a problem with the power steering module Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Crossroads Hyundai of Loveland inspected the vehicle Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, not until the moment the issue occurred. The strangest part of the issue is that after I would pull over and stop the vehicle, I would clean the sensors on outside of the car and on then restart the car and then sometimes it would work again. It seemed to happen on days that there was poor weather or messy roads that would impede the sensors' abilities.
