Recall Date: Sep 24, 2021
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Sonata, 2016-2017 Sonata Hybrid, and Sonata Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) software logic may not properly interpret the signals received from the multifunction switch, which could cause the turn signal to activate in the opposite direction of what the driver intended.

Potential Risk:
A turn signal that activates in the opposite direction of what was intended by the driver increases the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will update the SJB software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 19, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 210.

Defect Description:

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

On 12/26/22, I was on a road trip and the car began vibrating violently on the PA turnpike. The car was losing power and would not accelerate. I was forced to stop on the highway with my kids in the car. Hyundai repaired the cylinders in the engine and then it began burning excessive oil, 1 quart ever 1000 miles. For months, I drove this car and as the oil got lower, the car hesitated while driving and ran very rough. On 7/4/23, transmission overheated and once again, car lost power on the road and left me stranded with my kids. Engine is burning excessive oil and causing other issues with car. Was not fixed when car died the first time and has now left me limping along and stranded twice. Car has been at shop since 7/5/23. Engine approved, but dealer can’t get parts. Hyundai won’t approve transmission until engine is replaced, leaving me to drive an unreliable car again when transmission and engine both have known issues. It’s unsafe to continually be stranded by a car that clearly has a bad engine. Would have been more cost effective for Hyundai to replace car at this point and still being given runaround by corporate.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE Washington, DC 20590 Subject: Anti-Theft Upgrade Request and Complaint Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing this letter as an Autochthon American woman exercising my rights to conduct commerce and practice freedom of religion, seeking assistance and resolution for a distressing incident related to the theft of my conveyance. I believe that the faulty design system of my Hyundai, which was advertised as reliable, contributed to the unfortunate incident of theft. On [date of theft], my vehicle, a [make, model, year, color, license plate number], was stolen, and it has had a severe impact on my ability to conduct commerce, generate income, and practice my religious rights freely. The theft has left me under duress, causing immense stress and a crippling financial situation. The advertised reliability of Hyundai vehicles has proven to be far from the truth in my case, as well as the experience of many others. I am seeking assistance and action from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to address this issue and improve the anti-theft measures in Hyundai vehicles. My inability to utilize my vehicle has significantly hindered my daily life, preventing me from engaging in productive work and fulfilling my religious obligations. I implore the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to thoroughly investigate this matter and take necessary measures to enhance the security and anti-theft features in Hyundai vehicles. I kindly request the following actions: 1. An investigation into the reported faulty design system contributing to the theft of my vehicle and its impact on others. 2. A prompt recall and implementation of an effective anti-theft upgrade for all affected Hyundai models to prevent similar incidents in the future. 3. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel was stiff and the vehicle lost motive power. No warning light was illuminated. The contact parked and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was also diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced; however, the manufacturer declined the engine replacement due to Service Campaign 953 (ECM & Cluster Update - Engine Monitoring Logic Product Improvement) not being performed prior to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The contact stated that she had not received notification of the Service Campaign. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 106,238.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 106,238.

Additional Notes:

Several weeks ago, the trunk would not open. The latch was determined to be defective. I paid for a repair and replacement at a local garage. I had discovered there was a recall but phone calls to the dealership service department were not returned. I paid $149.79 for the part and part of $150.00 labor charge to replace the trunk latch. Can I get a reimbursement for this part replacement and labor to repair?

Potential Consequences:

I have been having issues with my electric power steering rack and pinion when turning left it binds occasionally. I was backing into my driveway 7/10/2023 and my steering rack bound up and locked, triggering steering control warning light, and abs light. Other models of Sonata and previous years have recalls on this problem and I this should be included with those active recalls.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I have financed my Hyundai Sonata Sport 2017 in December of 2019. I have not had any issues until this current year of 2023. I have noticed that with every oil change that I receive that I would have to go back to the dealership or certified mechanic a month or two earlier. I personal checked for leaks but seen no signs of why I had to get constant oil changes. Recently, when driving on the highway speed limit at 70 mph and my car went to 60 mph. The engine light came on but no other warning. I stopped the car, check the oil level which was pretty low and topped it off. I let the car sit for a short while as I was only 5 mins away from home. Soon as I made it back, I check the oil level again which was in the line. Check for visible leaks. I figured my car shook as it did and idle at the speed do to a misfire with the spark plugs/coils which I had already replaced 2 months prior to the incident. I was able to use a car scanner from AutoZone to check for codes but there wasn't an engine light at all on the dashboard. There was only one code that did show which was P1326 but no engine light or flashing engine light. I then schedule an appointment for an oil change and to confirm that the engine light code was with Firestone Auto Care to analyze the issue. They did an overall check over on the car, checked for codes, and changed the oil in which they found no issues. With driving my car to test if there were any issues it completely shut down and did not want to start. They called me to tell me that the engine was locked. They tried turning the engine over multiple times, but nothing would start up. Due to not knowing what was going on with my vehicle I felt unsafe with driving it as it completely slowed down on the highway. As other cars where speeding by. It gave no indications prior to the incident that anything was wrong. I am waiting to see a Hyundai dealership to inspect my vehicle which they are booked until next month. My car is currently disabled.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

I noticed that the steering column was making a noise right after Hyunda replaced the defective motor. Car was leaking fluids and engine light came on. Benson Hyundai had the car towed. I mentioned that the steering did not feel right and I was concerned. They evaluated and said the mid steering shaft needed to be replaced. I noticed this was an issue with earlier models but did not see anything with the 2017 model. Thought it would be worth inquiring as the dealership is so nasty to deal with and don’t seem to have answers when I go to them.
