Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

Potential Risk:
A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on November 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed January 15, 2022. 652K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Sep 4, 2020
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.

Potential Risk:
An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. 6.2K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Nov 21, 2016
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Tucson vehicles manufactured May 19, 2015, to November 14, 2016, and 2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured November 28, 2015, to November 14, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness that, due to a malfunction of the tow hitch module, may result, in the trailer brake lights being constantly illuminated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Potential Risk:
If the trailer brake lights stay illuminated while being used, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:

Defect Description:

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

In August 2024, the engine of the vehicle suddenly started making a very loud knocking noise, with no previous warning lights. We did not feel it was safe to drive. We saw online that a recall was underway by Hyundai for 2017 Tucsons due to problems with the rod bearings, where metal spreads throughout the engine. There is the potential for the engine to catch fire, and a complete engine replacement is recommended. This was confirmed by the dealership where we bought the vehicle, Boucher Hyundai of Waukesha, which told us they are replacing the engines in many of these vehicles. However, our VIN was not included in the recall, although the problem is identical to what is described in the recall. We had the car towed to the dealership; after confirming the problem, the dealership filed a claim with Hyundai seeking to add our VIN to the recall. We included all of the maintenance records since we bought the vehicle in January 2021 with 64K miles. Hyundai rejected the claim, citing a gap in the maintenance records from 64,000-124,000 miles. The dealership questioned that, since they had submitted our maintenance records and there were no gaps. Hyundai again denied the claim, citing a gap in the maintenance records from 17,000-29,000 miles - before we owned the vehicle. We called Hyundai customer service seeking an explanation; they said that the decision is made by Hyundai Motor America, a different entity, which only the dealership can contact, not vehicle owners. The customer service rep's only suggestion was to file a claim with your agency. The vehicle is parked and undriveable; it is available for inspection.

Rear driver side door suddenly will not open from outside or inside. A rear passenger would be essentially trapped in the car should an incident/accident happen. I googled and it seems this is a well known issue affecting several model years of Hyundai, including my 2017 model. I do not see a recall for this extremely dangerous issue.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I change the oil every 2000 miles and use what it states. Second oil change that noticed the oil drained out of the vehicle was close to nothing. First of all no warning indication oil was that low. It vibrates when it’s still and when you accelerate it tugs. Took it to the dealership where purchased extended warranty. Temporary fix is combustion cleaning with re seat piston rings then a valve cleaning and pcv replacement. Permanent solution replace the engine which warranty won’t cover since it’s technically not broken. Charging me ridiculous amount money for temporary fix. What if the oil goes else where or doesn’t notified low oil. It can catch on fire or all of sudden stops. I have my two babies with me in the car always it’s our family car. Vehicle has been inspected by dealership not inspected by police insurance representatives or others. No indication no warning signs pop up of low oil. It’s consuming too much oil which it’s going to other places in the engine which can cause fire risk. I’m trying to prevent the engine cause a fire or risk to myself or my family.

Potential Consequences:

Was driving down highway and vehicle lost power and shut off. Brought car to mechanic shop they ran a diagnostic and tore down the engine to see what the problem was. They found the problem was with oil consumption and carbon buildup. Oil was leaking through the pistons, piston rings into the combustion chamber, which in part was causing oil to go through the exhaust system. They found oil in the exhaust pipes and the catalytic converter and the exhaust manifold. The catalytic converter had to be replaced because it was clogged with all the oil that was leaking through the exhaust system from the combustion chamber. They found carbon buildup on the pistons, the piston rings and inside the combustion chamber

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I reported a problem with my engine to the Clay Cooley Hyundai dealership (Mesquite) in April 2022. I told them that my oil was burning a lot faster than normal. My car was currently under warranty at the time, which would have covered a new engine replacement. The dealership instructed me to do “oil consumption” tests and had me come in every 1000 miles to see if there were any oil leaks. Once I completed the tests, they told me to do another round of testing, which I thought was odd. I ended up doing tests from April-October 2022, and by the time I was finished my warranty expired. They said that my engine was fine and good to drive. I took my car to the same dealership in August 2024 with the same issue and that my engine wasn’t accelerating. They are now telling that there is a problem with my engine and charging me a new one for $10k. It would've been covered under my warranty in 2022, but they had me drive over the warranty limit so that a new engine wouldn’t be covered anymore. After doing research, there was a Class Action lawsuit about the engine for my vehicle. The problem is damage to the engine’s connecting rod bearings. You could hear a knocking sound from my engine. This issue has been happening from 2022-2024. I had to do oil changes more frequently. After consulting with a local auto care shop, they said it was a manufacturing problem. Hyundai put me back on the road with an unsafe car. The engine should have been fixed back in 2022. Hyundai Corporate is only offering to pay 50% of the engine (I would have to pay $5k-8k). I feel like they knew about the bad engine because of the lawsuit, and the reason I had to do a second round of tests was to drive over the warranty mileage.
