Hyundai Motor America
NHTSA Campaign: 21V727000 SAFETY RECALL
95.5K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Sep 17, 2021
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

Potential Risk:
A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on November 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed January 15, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 209.
Additional Details:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Hyundai Motor America
NHTSA Campaign: 20V543000 SAFETY RECALL
652K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Sep 4, 2020
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.

Potential Risk:
An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 195.

NHTSA Campaign: 16V842000 SAFETY RECALL
6.2K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Nov 21, 2016
Safety Issue:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Tucson vehicles manufactured May 19, 2015, to November 14, 2016, and 2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured November 28, 2015, to November 14, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness that, due to a malfunction of the tow hitch module, may result, in the trailer brake lights being constantly illuminated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Potential Risk:
If the trailer brake lights stay illuminated while being used, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected accessory trailer hitch wiring harnesses, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 13, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 153.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Car would not accelerate after getting on the interstate. Had to ease vehicle off exit ramp to side of road. Multiple engine lights on. Car would no longer start. Had independent mechanic shop evaluate as well as local Hyundai dealership. Both determined internal compression rod failure. Only solution is to replace engine. It is a 1.6L T for 2017 Tucson. The VIN for this car shows no engine recall but is the exact same issue that has resulted in Hyundai engine recall with the 2.0 vehicles.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Despite proper maintenance, at 100k miles the engine started knocking aggressively and the dealership advised me not to drive it or it would throw a rod in the very near future. It started burning oil around 80k miles. This is the Limited model with the gamma engine that was not included in the recalls of the other Tuscon engine, but seems to have the same problem.

My harmonic balancer went bad after 120,000 miles causing my camshaft pully to shear off and a bolt to come loose causing me to have to replace my entire engine. I was told by my mechanic that this is a very rare occurring issue. Could this have happened because of a faulty harmonic balancer?

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The engine entered limp mode, lost oil pressure and began knocking. Vehicle was brought to a dealer where it remained for ~1 month. The dealer inspected the vehicle, and determined it to be a valve cover leak, which does not track given the issues. When picked up from the dealer, the engine seized shortly down the road. Upon my own inspection, it was found that the engine oil drain plug was missing. It is unclear if the dealer loosened the drain plug during their inspection, or if it fell out due to some other issue. In either case, the manufacturer and their representative (dealership) created a dangerous situation for the driver of that vehicle, which had to be pushed out of moving traffic during a busy time of day.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Within last oil change the engine had oil consumption and has a loud engine knocking sound. The upcoming oil change date had not been exceeded and/or miles had not been exceeded. The engine knock caused me to pull over immediately at a location on a highly traveled road and no shoulder or safe spot which was dangerous. Safety was a concern because I had to wait for a tow truck in cold winter weather. The local Hyundai dealership maintenance person said it was a known issue with that make and model and the repair wait time is 5 months because they don't have enough staff and cannot get parts. My tuscan just had an inspection at the last oil change on 10/22/2024. no report from Hyundai that the oil level was an issue or engine having problems. There not any warning lights or low level lights and/or noises until it suddenly happened.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Greetings, I have had issues with the Hyundai Tucson 2017 I own for many months. Issues include among others an abnormal knocking noise from the engine, reduced engine power and/or hesitation, burning smell, oil leaking, and smoke coming out of the engine, misfires, and other issues. It happened many times on the highway and almost caused accidents and the last time it happened, the vehicle was towed, and recently the smoke coming from the engine forced me to pull over. I reported the issue to the dealer but they didn't recall or address the issue. The car has been maintained properly over time and now I fear for my life. It is totally unfair that about 100k of this brand have been recalled for the same issue, in my case it is just after I finished to pay in full the vehicle. I seek your support to have it addressed for safety

Corrective Action:

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

There is an intermittent problem with the transmission. It’s impossible to predict when the transmission will slip. When navigating traffic, it has happened multiple times trying to pull out across oncoming traffic, and the transmission begins slipping so badly in a couple of instances nearly causing a side impact. There are no recalls related to this, but the dealership confirms it is common… the fact that it is intermittent makes it worse. You get used to the transmission performing as it should… Next thing you know it slips when you can’t afford for it to slip..
