Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (GST) is recalling certain Toyota 2023 GR Supra, 2024 4 Runner, Corolla, Grand Highlander, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Land Cruiser Hybrid, Tacoma, Tacoma Hybrid, 2023-2024 BZ4X, Corolla Cross Hybrid, GR Corolla, GR86, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Prius, Prius Prime, Sequoia Hybrid, Tundra, Tundra Hybrid, Venza Hybrid, 2023-2025 Crown, and 2025 Camry Hybrid vehicles equipped with GST accessories. The load carrying capacity modification label may display inaccurate added weight values. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Safety Issue:
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Lexus TX350, TX500 Hybrid, and TX550 Hybrid+ vehicles. The driver and passenger side curtain air bags may not unroll as intended and could partially deploy outside of an open window. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."

Potential Consequences:
I have a 2024 Grand Highlander and when I get to empty the most I can put in it is 10 1/2 gallons of gas. Toyota said I had a 17.2 gallon gas tank. I’ve called Toyota. They set up a appointment. They were going to pull the gas tank and check the sensor. The dealership said oh no you have a 5 gallon plus reserve in that we have the same problem with the RAV4, the problem is because on trips you have to keep stopping for gas when I get 325 to 340 miles it tells me I’m empty when I fill up it says I can go 520 to 540 miles the most I’ve ever been able to put in it was 12 gallons and that was going down beyond empty and driving it for another 50 miles. It doesn’t make sense to have 5 gallons 6 gallons 7 gallons of gas sitting in my truck that I’m carrying that weight and not getting to use it this just doesn’t seem like Toyota‘s way of fixing things. I did recall Toyota and now they tell me I have to get the dealership to do something about it. They don’t do repairs on their vehicles. Only the dealership can do that.

The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, it was discovered that the key fob lost power causing the key fob to become undetected inside the vehicle. The contact was not able to lock or start the vehicle due to the failure. In addition, there was a beeping sound coming from the vehicle. The dealer was not contacted. Published 2024 Toyota Hybrid Grand Highlander (TGH) specifications, the TGH owners manual and dealer information provided indicated the vehicle has a 17.2 gallon fuel tank. However, the most fuel I am able to get in the tank is between 11 and 11.5 gallons. I've had the vehicle in to fix the defect on three occasions; 2023-11-27, 2024-3-11, & 2024-8-13 to no avail. On the second service, Toyota's technician said the tank had 16.8 gallons remaining when I picked it up, I had filled it the previous day and driven approximately 15 miles. Once the gauge showed near empty with only a few miles left of fuel, I filled the tank and was only able to get 11.4 gallons in the tank. There appears to be six gallons of fuel that I am carrying in the tank that the fuel system cannot access. I have searched on-line and found that a number of other TGH owners are experiencing a similar defect.

Toyota has issued a STOP SALE and RECALL on the airbags in this vehicle. There is no anticipated time for resolution but rumors indicate it might be October. During this time the airbags would not deploy if you are driving with the front windows down as it affects both driver and passenger side. We bought this car with the expectation of quality and my confidence is not high given Toyota has also issued recalls on engines in the Tundra. I have contacted Toyota Customer Care, a case was created and I was directed to the dealership for any additional action or updates. The dealership has indicated that the warranty administration has not authorized loaners as there would be no reason for me to drive with my windows down. While that might be true this time of year due to extreme heat I may take the car with me to cooler climates and have the windows down. The Lane Keep Assist seems to be aggressive at times trying to get me to "stay" in my lane when I have been driving and maintaining a center position in the lane but feel it pull the steering wheel when it seems unnecessary. I am unclear if this is a defect in the software or cameras or if it could be the result of a sensor with some debris or obstruction over it (i.e. dirty windshield or bug splatter)

Potential Consequences:
Several times per week, when I go to accelerate after being at a complete stop, my vehicle hesitates and does not pick up power. It very slowly accelerates and feels as if it’s going to stall, then suddenly revs up and accelerates, but revs up higher than it should before finally getting to the appropriate speed/rpm. This is very unsafe as I cannot pull out into traffic, even if I should have time, because I don’t know if it is going to accelerate or not. One of these days I am going to get T-boned! I took it to the dealership and they did a software update that was supposed to fix the issue, but it did not. The issue still happens several times per week. There are no warning lights on the dash. The dealership did not run a diagnostic because they told me I would have to pay for it if no codes came up. I’m not willing to do that, as I feel since the vehicle is under warranty and having issues, the diagnostic should not be my responsibility to pay for. I cannot say a specific date when it occurred (below) because it occurs often.

Several times per week, when I go to accelerate after being at a complete stop, my vehicle hesitates and does not pick up power. It very slowly accelerates and feels as if it’s going to stall, then suddenly revs up and accelerates, but revs up higher than it should before finally getting to the appropriate speed/rpm. This is very unsafe as I cannot pull out into traffic, even if I should have time, because I don’t know if it is going to accelerate or not. One of these days I am going to get T-boned! I took it to the dealership and they did a software update that was supposed to fix the issue, but it did not. The issue still happens several times per week. There are no warning lights on the dash. The dealership did not run a diagnostic because they told me I would have to pay for it if no codes came up. I’m not willing to do that, as I feel since the vehicle is under warranty and having issues, the diagnostic should not be my responsibility to pay for. I cannot say a specific date when it occurred (below) because it occurs often.

In our view we should be refunded in full for this vehicle purchase given the ongoing safety issue resulting in us being unable to drive the vehicle.

When accelerating from a complete stop, there will occasionally be significant hesitation in the car actually accelerating. For example, I was at a stop sign then attempted to make a left turn when there was a break in the oncoming traffic. My car would not accelerate, almost as if it shut off. It then begins to accelerate. On another instance, I was at a stop sign and when I had the right of way, I stepped on the gas pedal but the car would not accelerate until roughly 10mph, at which time the acceleration kicked in. After this happened a few times, and after reading about it in social media groups, I brought the issue to the attention of the dealership. At the time of service, they were able to replicate the issue and performed a software update (T-SB-0017-24). That seemed to help but only for a few days, then the issue happened again - twice in the same afternoon. I took the car back, only to be told the issue could now not be replicated and that there was no additional fix. It happened again this morning. It is only a matter of time before I get broadsided because my car doesn't move through a turn or the intersection because it just rolls until the acceleration kicks in. I'm concerned about getting rear ended when the car doesn't move at the appropriate speed when either the light changes or from a stop at a stop sign. There are no warning lamps that appear or any sort of system malfunction notices.
