Defect Description:

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Engine began misfiring and check engine light and ESC warning indicators displayed as I was driving. I pulled over and shut off vehicle, read manual and restarted engine. Same problems occurred, so I drove to Chevrolet dealer which was a mile away. The advisors said I shouldn’t drive it on the expressway or any further since engine had known problems that GM was aware of and it would blow up. Scans showed P0300 & P0305 for Cylinder 5 misfire. Major Repair included replacement of all lifters and push rods on both banks and the camshaft taking 17 days. This engine should have a GM Recall due to its severity. I was told the engine usually blows up before the warranty period is over and GM would just fix it. Unfortunately for me, my engine failed after full warranty and while I was traveling out of state to a family wedding, costly me directly. GM did pay half of the cost of repair which indicates admitting fault. The major safety concern is when an engine blows up and the driver cannot control the vehicle causing accidents or fire (and being stranded). There were No previous indications or symptoms of engine failure prior to date the problem occurred. Police departments in Illinois have had the same problem with this engine and their entire Tahoe fleet needed a new / repaired engine. This is an unacceptable action by GM to just wait for the problem to occur instead of proactively recalling the engine for repair.

In addition, the contact noticed a grinding sound and several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with brake master cylinder failure. The contact was informed that the brake master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the brake master cylinder had been replaced two times since October 2024 and needed to be replaced a third time. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was provided a monetary discount towards the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

This is a fairly new vehicle, so to be told we need a new engine when we’ve had the car for only 4 years is ridiculous! We were driving one day and heard a knocking sound coming from the front of the car. We made it home, but when we tried to leave the next time, we only made it halfway down our driveway when we heard a loud knocking noise from the front and the car suddenly stopped. We were dead in the water and needed to get the car towed back to our house. The gear shift was also stuck in drive and we couldn’t turn the car on. The engine had completely seized up. The tow truck driver had to get underneath the vehicle in order to disengage the gear shift and allow us to shift into neutral so that we could get it back home. When we had it towed to our mechanic, they told us that it was a bearing failure and the connecting rod had caused our engine to seize up. I’m just glad we weren’t on a major highway or busy street at the time this took place. This is supposed to be our family vehicle and it has been out of commission for more than 6 months because we haven’t been able to afford to replace the engine. We’ve tried contacting GM directly, but they said we were beyond our warranty and there was nothing they could do to help us.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

GM has a known issue with engine lifters on this model engine that fail around 60,000 miles. Customer service managers even stated so themselves and GM has a TSB related to this. Repair bill is $5K-$6K if it doesn’t bend the cam shaft and upwards of $10K if cam is bent. This is a huge safety issue because vehicle fails while in motion, shakes violently, and numerous safety features the driver relies on turn off.

Vehicle has no warning of issues. Regular maintenance had been performed and had 80k miles. Driving down a 4 lane the engine locked up and lost power. We have been waiting on it to be repaired for 4 months now. The engine is back ordered from GM and no one can find used ones. We found a refurbished one but it also locked up within 30 minutes of being installed. I was warrantied so now we are having ours rebuilt but is costing us $14k.

Statement of Safety Issue for 2021 Tahoe Transmission Vehicle Information: Make and Model: 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe VIN: [XXX] Issue Description: I have been receiving the warning message "Service Transmission. Unable to Shift Soon." multiple times, specifically on [XXX] and again on [XXX]. This issue is particularly concerning as there is an existing recall on the 2021 Tahoe for a transmission problem that can cause the rear wheels to lock up or result in the vehicle suddenly losing the ability to shift, as explained by a GMC transmission technician. Attempts to Resolve: I have contacted multiple dealerships to attempt to get my transmission diagnosed. Unfortunately, all dealerships within my area are backed up with transmission work for 4-6 weeks. I have spoken to multiple dealership service departments and have been informed that there are numerous vehicles currently experiencing this same exact issue. Some vehicles are continuing to drive, while others are being stranded on the side of the road, unable to shift. Safety Concern: The safety concern, as stated in the recall, is that my rear wheels may lock up or my vehicle may suddenly lose the ability to shift. This is particularly alarming for me as I have to drive over a large steep bridge every day to go to work, and there is no emergency lane while traversing the bridge. I am terrified to continue driving, but I only have one vehicle for my family (this 2021 Tahoe) and no dealership has a loaner vehicle available due to the high quantity of transmission errors. Conclusion: Given the severity of the issue and the potential safety risks, I urgently request assistance in addressing this transmission problem as soon as possible. The current situation is untenable and poses a significant danger to my safety and the safety of others on the road. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Potential Consequences:

The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving 35-40 MPH, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle failed to restart. The contact waited with the hazard lights flashing. The contact stated that after approximately 6 attempts the vehicle restarted. After driving a short distance, the vehicle stalled again. The contact was able to coast to a nearby gas station. The contact made several more attempts to start the vehicle after waiting for a while, to restart the vehicle. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the fuel pump power control module (Part # 13544060) had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer was unable to repair the vehicle due to the part not being available. The contact became aware of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 21V739000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) and 21V064000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included in the recalls. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 60,452.

I was able to pull to the side and put the blinkers because the traffic was heavy and could of had a vehicle crash into me if I had not maneuver the vehicle quickly(My two daughters where with me in the vehicle). Now it is happening more and more. we also do not receive updates anymore to the infotainment system. the dealership had to manually do it a year ago. also will not keep our proifile signed in at all. always says were stuck in guest mode. says we have full storage when there is not any apps downloaded.

Defect Description:

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

My vehicle performed an update without my knowledge. When I got back into my vehicle after a quick stop the infotainment system said "Update Failed - Return to Dealer". I did so and was informed that a reprogram was attempted but failed so the entire system needed replaced. There is active recalls I'm told on newer model vehicles with the same issue but mine is not included. So, after the OTA update I didn't ask to take place I'm stuck paying $1,300 for a new infotainment system. I called GM who basically told me without there being a recall there was nothing they could do.
