SEAT BELTS

Potential Consequences:

FIRST EPISODE: DRIVER'S SEAT BELT LOCKED PREMATURELY WHILE IN MOTION ~35MPH, NO SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES, NOT BRAKING RAPIDLY. AT NEXT RED LIGHT, I UNBUCKLED BUT COULD NOT DRAW BELT OUT MORE THAN A FEW INCHES. PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT, OPENED AND CLOSED DOOR A FEW TIMES AND FINALLY GOT BELT TO PULL OUT FAR ENOUGH TO REBUCKLE AND DRIVE HOME. SINCE THEN, SEAT BELT ALSO LOCKS INTERMITTENTLY AFTER FEW INCHES OF EXTENSION UPON INITIAL CAR ENTRY AND FIRST BUCKLE-IN. OPENING AND CLOSING DOOR AND MULTIPLE PULLS EVENTUALLY RELEASES BELT ENOUGH TO BUCKLE, BUT THEN IT BECOMES SLACK WHILE DRIVING. PROBLEM FIRST STARTED LATE FEB-EARLY MARCH, BUT DEFINITELY BEFORE MARCH 16, 2020 WHEN SANTA CLARA COUNTY SHELTER-IN-PLACE ORDER STARTED. IT HAS ESCALATED SINCE THEN...WARMING WEATHER? I DRIVE TO MY PEDIATRIC PRACTICE AND THE NEWBORN UNIT AT OUR LOCAL HOSPITAL 4-5 TIMES/WEEK DESPITE PANDEMIC. I'M CONCERNED THAT IF BELT IS LOCKING INAPPROPRIATELY AT VEHICLE STARTUP AND SLACKENING DURING NORMAL DRIVING, IT MAY FAIL TO LOCK IN A CRASH.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

THE CAR WAS BOUGHT NEW 4 AND 1/2 YEARS AGO AND HAS 104,000 MILES. ALL SERVICE WORK HAS BEEN DONE BY A FORD DEALERSHIP. THE CAR DEALERSHIP SAID THE CAR WAS OKAY 3 MONTHS AGO. ONE DAY, THE ENGINE STARTING RUNNING ROUGH WITH WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST. THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT PULLED A CODE P02300, WHICH MEANS THE #2 CYLINDER IS MISFIRING. FROM OUR RESEARCH, THE 2017 FORD FUSION HAD A RECALL ON THE EXACT SAME ENGINE FOR THE SAME ISSUES. THIS IS ALSO A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR MANY FORD SERVICE DEALERSHIPS. THE FIX FOR THIS IS REPLACING THE ENGINE.

ON FEBRUARY 11TH 2020, I PURCHASED A 2016 FORD FUSION WITH 73,000 MILES FROM AMERICAN CAR CENTER IN WEST COLUMBIA, S C. ON FEBRUARY 23RD I WAS RIDING ON I26 AND MY CAR STARTED OVERHEATING. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT. I OPENED THE HOOD AND ALL MY ANTIFREEZE AND AND WATER WAS SPOUTING OUT OF THE RESERVOIR. I PUT ENOUGH WATER BACK IN IT TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP DIRECTED ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO PEP BOYS ON BROAD RIVER ROAD, COLUMBIA SOUTH CAROLINA TO FIND AND FIX THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE THERMOSTAT AND THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. PEP BOYS HAD THE CAR FOR ABOUT 5 DAYS TO REPAIR. I GET THE CAR BACK ON FEBRUARY 28TH 2020. THE CAR WAS FINE UNTIL MARCH 12TH. THAT MORNING I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK AND I HEARD A BLUNT SOUND COMING FROM MY VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE JUST CUT OFF WHILE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD ENOUGH POWER TO MAKE IT TO WORK. WHEN I LEFT WORK FOR THE DAY, THE CAR CUT OFF AGAIN WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. I ONCE AGAIN PULLED OVER AND GOT ENOUGH POWER TO MAKE IT TO THE CAR DEALER. WHEN I GOT TO THE DEALER ONE OF THE SALESMAN WENT TO AUTO ZONE TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC AND THE CODES CAME BACK WITH A FUEL ISSUE. I THEN DROPPED THE CAR OFF TO RICHARDS AUTO REPAIR IN WEST COLUMBIA, CAROLINA, HE DID A DIAGNOSTIC AND NOTIFIED ME THAT THE TUBE ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE DID THE WORK AND THE CAR RAN OK. ON MARCH 22, WHILE DRIVING, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE STARTED MOVING TORWARD THE H MEANING THE CAR IS RUNNING HOT AGAIN. I RECORDED A VIDEO OF THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE MOVING UP AND DOWN AND ALSO THE "POWER REDUCED TO LOWER ENGINE TEMP" MESSAGE CAME ON ON THE DASHBOARD. I TURNED THE CAR OFF ONCE PARKED AND DID NOT START IT AGAIN FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. ON MARCH 24TH, I WAS OUTSIDE OF A LOCAL STORE AND IN PARK AND THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE MOVED AGAIN TO THE H WHILE THE CAR WAS ON AND IDLING. *LN CONSUMER STATED CAR OVERHEATED AGAIN ON APRIL 11TH.*JB
