Potential Consequences:

I first experienced HEV hybrid system issue back in 2022. I took my sonata to the dealership which they had over a month to try to fix the problem which they did for the time. Now a year later I’m back with the same issues and the dealer basically saying they can’t see my car for a month then don’t know how long it’s going to take to fix the issues if the even. Nobody can really tell me what’s wrong with my car. This the second time it’s been a safety hazard while driving on the interstate and the system malfunctions causing a hazard to me and drivers around me because the vehicle has basically cuts off rapidly slowing the vehicle down

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

This issue has happened twice in one month on my Hyundai sonata hybrid that I’ve had for less than 3 years. It is a 2017 model. While driving on the interstate, the car will stop accelerating and all warning lights will come on along with “Check hybrid engine. Turn off engine”. The dealership has yet to find out the problem and cannot tell me what the issue is both times I’ve brought it in (it’s had ti be towed both times). I cannot afford to keep paying for repairs on an almost new car along with the safety concerns of driving it. I am attaching pictures of both times it happened- noting that it is the same warning each time. It looks like multiple owners are having this issue and none has yet to be resolved.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The car started shaking or not running smoothly back in May and then the check engine light came on. I immediately pulled over and inspected under the hood. I saw nothing wrong and the car started fine and check engine light went away. I drove a few more days without any problems but then the same thing happened again. The next day I called the dealership (Bob King Hyundai in Winston-Salem, NC) the earliest appointment was 26 days away. I had no choice but to keep driving it even thought I was terrified every time. It happened a few more times and I took it by Auto Zone and they gave me a DTCs Secondary code of P0303 Cylinder 3 misfire detected No Code(The gentleman informed me that to get a code the light would need to stay on. I told this to the dealership when I took it in for service and diagnosis on 5/30/2023 They called me on 6/1/2023 and told me the mechanic could not find anything and that it could be a vaccum leak and they can clear themselves. About 2 days latter it happened again. I called the dealership back and ask that the Service Manager call me and He still has not called me. I also reported this to corporate Hyundai and that Gentleman stated He could not get in touch with anyone about the issue either. I went ahead and made another appointment which is now scheduled for 8/10/2023. I took it to O'Rielys and they told me the same thing that Auto Zone did Cylinder 3 misfire. I have replaced the gas cap with Hyundai but that didn't help.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

My wife and I have been having an intermittent but constant problem with our steering mechanism which our dealer says they cannot replicate and therefore cannot resolve. This constant problem is one that MANY Sonata Hybrid owners have reported online. Our experience is having the steering wheel seize, flashing lights during which the red steering wheel icon with an exclamation point remains on. Our experiences have been in our mobile home park when we are turning left. The last two incidents were when we were blocking our street and vehicles could not pass. A prominent feel in the steering wheel of clicking, clunking, and play in the wheel accompanies these incidents. I had to, as others, to turn the car off and restart to carefully, amidst clicking and clunking, to return the car to our driveway where it will sit until we take frontage roads to our dealer. We recently received a notice from Hyundai that the steering wheel mechanisms' warranty has been extended 15 years from the ending date of the original warranty. The notice indicated that our Sonata Hybrid "may exhibit reduced power steering assist and/or motor driven power driven steering (MOPS)." We believe this is suggesting that MANY complaints have been sent to various authorities regarding this same issue. We now have a much delayed (due to our dealership's backed up service appointments) appointment to again address this problem which they say is not happening because they cannot replicate it. Many online comments indicate that people are scared that themselves, loved ones or others will be involved in a fatality due to this "intermittent" problem. We could not find a Hyundai Regional Manager with whom to correspond. We feel abandoned by Hyundai but hopefully not by the NHTSA.GOV. We are scared and disappointed. Is Hyundai really "committed to providing vehicles of outstanding quality and value" as its August, 2022, EXTENDED WARRANTY NOTIFICATION said. Please help. Hyundai dealers won't.
