FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Throttle hesitation causes unsafe driving. Often times after slowing down at a yield sign and then accelerating there is a hesitation like the accelerator pedal is dead for about 1 second and then the truck suddenly lunges forward. A few months after purchasing my truck I reported the issue to Shelor Toyota and they did TSB 0111-22 which temporarily fixed the problem. Drove the truck for about 10 days and it was hesitation free. After 10 days or so the hesitation returned and it was as bad as ever. It’s very dangerous when driving on wet roads. The danger is slowing down to an almost stop to turn right or left on to another street. Once I complete the turn and try to accelerate on to the next street, I am forced to keep depressing the accelerator more and more to make my truck move forward. A few seconds later when the acceleration does occur, I lose control of the back end because I am now at half throttle om a wet road and it sends too much torque to the rear wheels causing them to lose traction. I’ve tried to adjust my driving habits to allow for the unpredictable throttle response but it is impossible to predict what the throttle response will be from one time to the next. It is a struggle to drive this truck in a safe manner because there is hardly ever any linear acceleration. I took my truck back to Shelor Toyota March 15th 2024 for some warranty work and reported the hesitation had returned right after they previously completed TSB 0111-22. This March 2024 visit to Shelor Toyota they contacted Toyota Technical Assistance regarding the issue and according to Toyota Assistance “Condition is a Normal Characteristic of This vehicle”. Shelor Toyota does great warranty work and treats me very well and I only have praise for them.

Please look into this issue making sure it safe for me and other.

Additional Notes:

I did a software update when it pops up on my LCD screen. Then the screen turns black and multiple sensors came on. LTA sensor Brake fail sensor crash senor and more. I look online and found out it has a apple car play issue that cause sensor to malfunction. I don't know if my truck is safe to drive. Afraid the airbag will blow up because of the crash sensor popping up and the failure brake senor also popping up. I took it took my local Toyota Dealer Sandia Toyota they didn't even look at it and made false accusations and try to charge me when my truck at 20000 miles. I took it to another dealer to get it fix. The incident started 4/6/2024 and today is 4/23/24 and I still have no truck to drive. I paid 70k for it but more concern for other. Please look into this issue making sure it safe for me and other.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I had a 2022 Toyota tundra I bought it new and had it serviced at two Toyota dealerships. The truck had numerous recalls but my truck had no significant problems. I was on a trip 10 hours from my house when I heard a slight knocking sound and noticed oil on the ground under the truck. I checked the oil it was between the two marks but on the low side. I drove it to the nearest Toyota dealership to get it serviced. It was diagnosed with main bearing spun, metal pieces in oil and engine failure. The truck had 63k miles 3k outside of the warranty. There were no warnings lights or check engine or low oil pressure light on at anytime. It is hard to believe a truck can be serviced with no issues to blown engine with no warning lights. I believe Toyota knows about an issue with the early engines but are not informing the customers. If it happens under warranty the will rebuild the engine or buy back the truck. In my case it was 3k outside of warranty and the dealership and Toyota gave no goodwill warranty. I believe being serviced at a dealership they should have been checking the oil for metal particulate at each oil change. In order to fix the problem before engine failure. But that means they would catch more before warranty expiration. Never once were we offered an extended warranty either which I find strange if Toyota didn’t know about the problem. We also had an employee at the Jackson location say she saw a know issue with my vin number before changing her story two days later. [XXX] This is a list of 60+ other trucks with the same problem from one website. Having no warning of a blown engine could cause serious damages physically and economically INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My 2022 Toyota Tundra was serviced regularly at the dealership since it was purchased brand new in December of 2021. I made a point to have it checked out as much as possible due to concerns that were raised by the dealer and online resources that the truck could possibly have major engine issues. On March 26th of 2024 I took my truck to the dealer to have it serviced and they completed everything necessary according to the maintenance recommendations. On April 1st, the following week after service, my engine cut off as I was merging onto the exit lane on I-40 in heavy traffic. I coasted to the bottom of the exit ramp and shifted the truck into park to try restart it. It would not restart so I was stuck in the middle of the ramp at a light until a tow truck came to assist me. After pushing the truck in the grass of the median it was loaded and taken to the nearest Toyota dealership. The next day I received a call that they would need to pull my oil pan to examine it due to the fact that they believed my engine was locked up. Once they pulled the pan and assessed the damage to the tune of $700, I was told that my engine and both of my turbos would need to be replaced because everything was full of metal shavings due to catastrophic engine failure. The total bill would be around $24000.00 for a truck that is 2 years old. Now the warranty on this particular truck is up to 60,000 miles and I am at 64,000. The dealership said that due to the fact that my truck was out of warranty I would have to take it up with Toyota. I have called Toyota customer care and still have not gotten anyone to respond to me. I called my local dealership where I have been getting my service and the manager stated to me that Toyota is aware of this issue but they are not recalling the vehicles yet. There are more than enough of these trucks with this problem to force Toyota to do something about it, but they have refused to accept responsibility for it. I could have died. I was lucky.

Defect Description:

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Being parked my truck started leaking fuel from the refuel port area, after inspected the truck found that fuel was coming out from the charcoal canister ( refueling line, truck was towed to dealership service department on 3/6/2024, service department inspected and found flap valve in gas tank not working properly allowing fuel out of the tank and charcoal canister contaminated, service department replaced the fuel tank and charcoal canister without any good results, once they refueled the truck to deliver it to me the truck started leaking fuel again at the same area, they explained to me that now they are going to contact Toyota Engineers to take the case. Needless to say having the truck leaking fuel next to the rear left brake assembly could cause a un contained fire.

Defect Description:

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Inaccurate Fuel gauge or fuel consumption tracking to protect a fuel pump. Vehicle equipped with a 32 Gal tank. Vehicle indicates zero miles after 27 gallons are consumed. This leaves 5 Gallons remaining or 15.62% fuel remaining which is excessive error. If you know you have over 100 miles remaining when the software say you are at zero you tend to drive "Past" zero as a matter of normal operation. It would not be unreasonable to wait until 2 gallons remains to refill tank as that would still be 30-46 miles remaining. It was explained to me that the fuel pump uses the "excess" 5 gallons of fuel to keep the fuel pump "Cool" since the fuel pump is a submersed type pump. An overheating pump inside a tank full of fuel vapor might be a significant problem.
