Recall Date: Apr 11, 2025

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017-2018 F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator vehicles. The brake master cylinder may allow brake fluid to leak from the front wheel circuit into the brake booster.

Recall Date: Mar 11, 2022
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, and 2016-2018 F-150 vehicles equipped with 3.5L Ecoboost engines. The brake master cylinder may allow brake fluid to leak from the front wheel circuit into the brake booster.

FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the brake master cylinder. If the master cylinder is leaking, the brake booster will also be replaced. Repairs will be performed free of charge. An interim owner notification letter notifying customers of the safety defect were mailed on April 29, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed April 29, 2022. POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

My Expedition was set to 45 mph via cruise control in a work zone, at night, on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. While in the first tunnel in the northbound lane with 2 way traffic, I heard a slight pop, then rough running feeling and completely lost acceleration. The power train wrench warning light came on. Since I was on an incline in the tunnel with no way to pull over and the vehicle was going forward at a snail's pace, I decided to continue as far as I could since it was the safest thing to do for all drivers in the tunnel. The Expedition finally crept out of the tunnel and I was able to pull off to the side to let traffic pass. As soon as we had cell phone service, I had my daughter call the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to let them know that we were disabled and in need of assistance. I decided to see what would happen if I turned the vehicle off and restarted. Everything reset and I had power, but for how long? The CBBT police agreed that the safest course of action for all vehicles on the road was to tow my vehicle to the other side as it is dangerous to breakdown on the CBBT, especially in one of the tunnels. I was able to drive home after the tow. However, the following day, I tried to drive it again and it did the same: ran rough, wrench sign, no pop that time, total loss of acceleration. Restarted and made it back home. My husband tested it a few days later after re-cleaning battery cable terminals that had been corroded before we replaced the factory battery, and it did the same thing with him on the highway! If we had been trying to get into traffic, turn where we had to cross traffic or any number of other situations and the Expedition lost power like that, the outcome could be deadly. The CBBT would have records since they towed me and wrote the VIN down.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

Vehicle has 124,058 miles. On this date - Oct 14, 2021, brake pedal got soft, audio and visual warning saying low brake fluid level. Luckily was just slowly pulling into driveway after driving at 55-60 on US 341. Checked brake fluid level. It was indeed very low. Added DOT4 fluid. Drove vehicle slowly in back area and depressed brake pedal several times. Pedal still not quite right. Thought maybe had air in lines. But soon audio/visual warning came on. Checked brake fluid level. Low again. Looked underneath for any obvious leaks - none. Check fire wall - nothing. So assumed fluid was going in to booster. Looked on internet and found other complaints just like this. This is EXTREMELY dangerous. Has anyone been killed yet? The brake parts need to be built like aircraft parts.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Throttle body failed and vehicle unexpectedly lost power while driving home from the airport at night. I did not initially realize it went into limp mode. The wrench light illuminated on the dash and I had to stop in the travel lane of a busy 45 mph street. I could not pull to the shoulder due to traffic. Other motorists were visibly angry and honking at me. After a little time I tried putting the vehicle in park, shutting it off and tried starting it again. It started with no issue and then died again a few blocks later, fortunately that time it was in a better location with no traffic. I took the vehicle to a Ford dealer the following morning, where I already had an appointment for preventative maintenance including new coolant and spark plugs. I suspected the throttle body failed after researching the issue and found a history of similar problems with other Ford products. The dealership also diagnosed a throttle body failure and charged me for a repair, which involved replacing the throttle body assembly. It is my understanding that Ford has extended warranty coverage on other models and that there may have been a recall campaign involving other models. My 2017 Ford Expedition XLT appears to have had the same issue. This problem could have been EXTREMELY dangerous if it happened on the highway or if a less experienced driver was operating the vehicle. The failure was sudden and unexpected.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Shortly after the car was started and while still parked, a foul smell was detected and black smoke observed coming from the air vents. The vehicle was then turned off however within minutes of safely exiting all passengers from the vehicle, flames came out towards the passenger seat from underneath the glove box. An unsuccessful attempt was made to smother the flames with large wet towels before being successfully put out with the fire extinguisher. 911 was called and the fire department suspected the cause of the fire was the HVAC motor blower. The battery was disconnected and the car towed to the dealership where it has been for the past week. As of yesterday, according to the dealer, the source of the fire is thought to be a short circuit in the HVAC motor blower. The insurance is awaiting the fire report at this point.
